CAMPING Happy Campers! Whatever camping means to the visitor, Lake Barkley area campgrounds have got you covered. There are accommodations for everything from the most spartan tent bivouac to amenity-rich luxury trailer or motor home lodging. Private campgrounds can put visitors as close to full services and shopping as they do lake access and fun in the natural world. Many sites overlook the lake that anchors the area’s recreation. There are also extensive camping opportunities, including back country, in Land Between The Lakes. Visitors will find campgrounds ranging in size from seven to 200 sites. Many campers book permanent sites on a year-round basis and install “park model” campers complete with decks, underpinning, storage sheds and the ever-popular golf cart for their home away from home, while others choose transient sites so they can ramble from state to state. Many campgrounds feature swimming pools, tennis courts, playgrounds, boat ramps and other amenities.

BOATING With 58,000 acres of water and 1,000 miles of shoreline . . . you should have plenty of room! You don’t have to bait a hook for big times on the waters. Boating has long been one of the great draws of Lake Barkley. Miles of scenic waters—all navigable year-round via well marked river channels—are ideal for everything from canoes to runabouts to sailboats to luxury yachts. Houseboating, exploring and pontoon boat relaxing in pictureperfect bays, are increasingly popular. Bring your own vessel and launch at one of the many lake access areas, marinas or ramps. You can also supply your own crew and shove off in a rental boat available from one of our marinas. Connected to Kentucky Lake by a free flowing canal, together they create the largest fresh-water, man-made lake in the country. Lake Barkley is part of the intercoastal waterway. This allows boaters to access the Great Lakes and the Gulf of Mexico all by boat. Lake Barkley covers 58,000 acres and provides a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities for millions of visitors each year. You will find plenty of room for personal watercraft, tubing, water-skiing, or just cruising down the lake. Easy access ramps are spread along the shores. Several boat access ramps offer picnic tables and areas to fish from the shoreline. You’ll discover large bay inlets to allow pleasure boaters and fishermen to get away from the main stream water traffic. These bays are as large as some lakes and offer secluded waters to relax and enjoy personal watercraft riding, houseboat anchoring, or hideaway fishing hot spots.

FISHING & HUNTING FISHING ... f a n t a s t i c ! The rich Cumberland River impoundment has made much of its name on the basis of exceptional fisheries that draw anglers from afar. It’s hard to say what rules, but a bonanza of black bass fishing and world class crappie fishing are the headliners. BASS FISHING on Lake Barkley is a winner from the first mild days of early spring well into late autumn. Those inclined might find great catches even in winter. CRAPPIE fishing is legendary during the spring spawning cycle, late March to early May, when big slab crappie move shallow for nesting duties. Devoted crappie anglers, however, find good fish year round, diverted only when winter weather is just too people-unfriendly. Fast and furious WHITE BASS fishing is a mainstay from spring through the summer period, and more anglers are discovering the high adventure of catching long-as-your-leg CATFISH on Lake Barkley. BLUEGILL and REDEAR SUNFISH are a hot ticket from late spring through summer, once “kid’s fish,” but nowadays targeted by many serious adult anglers since the species began growing to relative trophy sizes in recent years.

Lake Barkley fishing facts: The predominant LARGEMOUTH BASS population and a growing contingent of SMALLMOUTH BASS support a wealth of various fishing styles - from shallow flipping and pitching to deep channel edge structure fishing and everything in between. There are multiple means, then, to find quality catches. A basic “keeper” bass on Lake Barkley must be 15 inches, but catching legal bass is not a problem. Limit catches are routine, but fish quality runs far better. Lake Barkley is favorite waters for bass tournament anglers from club level to national touring professionals, and much of that fondness is because catches that average four pounds per fish or more aren’t unusual.

FISHING & HUNTING Highlights of the bassing season sometimes come in early spring when big bass first move to shorelines and in mid-spring when bass move to the backs of coves into brush flooded by rising water. Hot summer, when schools of fish collect on offshore drop-offs and channel ledges, and in early fall when bass move back to shores and shallows to feed up for the winter, are also premium times to fish. Many visiting fishermen at Lake Barkley have no time for bass; however, they come because the waters are a crappie angler’s paradise. WHITE CRAPPIE and a growing segment of BLACK CRAPPIE grow to slab sizes with ease on the main lake and in roomy embayments of the lake. The keeper size for crappie also is restrictive on Lake Barkley - 10 inches before the popular panfish become legal. But the lakes’ fishermen don’t wince at turning back any smaller fish. There are too many plus-size crappie available. Fish of two pounds and larger, hubcap-sized crappie, raise few eyebrows on the waters of this crappie factory. Crappie fishermen can load the boat at any time. Later winter to early spring, jiggers and minnow fishermen catch them in tight schools along main lake ledges. With the warm-up period, anglers dip, cast and troll to put jigs and/or minnows before crappie in various depths as they migrate up the courses of feeder creeks in the major bays. Primarily in April, anglers find crappie in the shallows, often in as little as knee-deep water, around brush and other cover along shores and in the backs of creeks during the spawn. As later spring warms, crappie are caught deeper during the reverse migration. The action picks up again in mid to late fall as schools once more move shallow with the cooling season. WHITE BASS are another fast-action favorite for Barkley fishermen. These hard-hitters are hot weather staples for fishing deep or in frothy surfacefeeding binges. These “stripes” are often caught by casting in-line spinners, heavy spoons or tailspinners or trolling crankbaits along the sides and over the tops of underwater bars, points or ledges — especially where current washes in schools of shad minnows, their favorite fare. BLUEGILL and REDEAR SUNFISH have grown to remarkable quality in recent years on Lake Barkley. These sunfish species have always been

FISHING & HUNTING popular for easy catches of fish in numbers, but more hard-core anglers have been won over to the eager brawlers now that hand-sized bluegill are especially copious and “shellcrackers” of 10 inches to a foot or longer are increasingly seen. For catches of real jumbos, it’s hard to top the potential of the lake’s CATFISH. Big channel cats and especially bigger blue catfish plus the occasional whopper flathead cat make for catches in both quantity and big game quality. If sheer pounds of tasty fish in the boat is the measure of a resource, Lake Barkley catfish loom major. And it doesn’t hurt anticipation that with the next bite you might hook into a 60- or 70-pounder. Catfish are often at their best in the heat of summer when they can be caught by bottom fishing with natural or prepared baits along creek and river channel ledges and points running into deep, open water. Anglers are missing a good bet, however, if they don’t fish for catfish around rocky shores, rock walls and riprap in late spring when the whiskered ones come shallow to spawn.

There are toothy SAUGER—the walleye’s delicious cousin—and a smattering of saltwater transplant STRIPED BASS and STRIPED BASS/WHITE BASS HYBRIDS to round out the game fish options. BOWFISHING has been around for years, but since there seems to be more bowhunters today than ever and fishermen are always looking for practice in the off season, what better practice than to have a moving fish as a target. Most states allow bowfishing for “rough” fish, such as carp, buffalo and gar, but not for game fish. In our area these so called “rough” fish are plentiful. Spring time spawn and higher water levels bring the carp and gar into shallower waters to feed and nest giving the bowfisherman a whole new hunting season. You will almost always see these fish rolling in the shallows late every afternoon through the summer. It is not unusual to shoot as many as twenty or thirty an evening.

HUNTING The woods, fields and waters of the Lake Barkley area pose a rich seasonal playground for game seekers. High on the list of Lake Barkley area hunters is WHITE-TAILED DEER. Kentucky is regularly in the top five states in producing record book deer, and the area yields its share of whoppers. Farm ground mixed with woodlots in the private sector hereabouts produces whitetails both in quantity and quality. Nearby Clarks River National Wildlife Refuge offers open hunting in rich bottomland hardwoods. And perhaps the region’s favorite public land option, the U.S. Forest Service’s Land Between The Lakes, presents a unique big woods hunting experience on 170,000 acres of ridges and hollows. Kentucky’s ARCHERY hunting is broad in opportunities, beginning the first Saturday in September and running continuously through mid January. Fall brings a wave of BOWHUNTING throughout the area. FISHING & HUNTING

Between The Lakes is especially popular with visiting bowhunters for the huge amount of open territory, scenic woodlands atmosphere and the opportunity to hunt bonus deer that don’t count against the state bag limit. FIREARMS deer hunting activates the masses in the region for a stretch in early to mid November during the excitement of the whitetail rut that puts big bucks on the move. That’s after an earlier sampling of MUZZLELOADING firearms and early youth firearms hunting on successive October weekends. LBL quota firearms hunting offers bonus deer for those drawn for permits. (Contact the Land Between The Lakes, 270924-2000 or www.lbl.org for quota permit application information.) Late fall and winter in the Lake Barkley region puts WATERFOWLERS onto liquid environments, including Lake Barkley itself. The Cumberland River impoundment is a favorite of big water DUCK HUNTERS who operate from boat blinds or impromptu shoreline hideaways to tempt winter migrant dabblers and divers that spin off the Mississippi Flyway. The big lake can be especially golden for late season duck hunters — or earlier season with the right weather system — when smaller bottomland sloughs and potholes freeze over, sending birds off to seek out larger open waters. To add spice to the Lake Barkley hunting, WHITE-FRONTED AND SNOW GEESE and others drop in from migrational flocks. Ducks are the primary lure for waterfowlers, but geese offer economy-sized bonuses. The sportsmen who can tear themselves away from spring fishing might enjoy some of the best WILD TURKEY HUNTING to be had in the woods and woodlots of the Lake Barkley region in April and May. Kentucky’s turkey flock is outstanding since the days of a species restoration, and the area is a producer of some nice, booming gobblers. Those lacking private land on which to duel with tom turkeys may find a wonderland in the Land Between The Lakes. The vast woodlands once held all the turkeys left in Kentucky, and it’s still a gobbler mecca now that the state’s turkey population has recovered and blossomed. The LBL offers both managed quota turkey hunting and post-quota open hunts. Contact the U.S. Forest Service management (270-924-2000) for quota applications. The Lake Barkley region also boasts its share of small game and predator hunting for those who seek variety or whose cup of tea might not be the headliner species. Among the options to chase are deer, waterfowl, turkeys, rabbits, quail, squirrels, coyotes, bobcats or other critters. There’s not much down time for sportsmen.

RELOCATION We're more than j u s t lake! The “Progressive Farmer” Magazine named Lyon County one of the top 20 places to live in the Southeast United States. With the unlimited outdoor recreational opportunities, it is easy to see why. Located in the heart of western Kentucky, the Lake Barkley area is an active and growing place to live and vacation. The natural beauty of the area is further enhanced with a small town and “friendly faces” atmosphere, while at the same time offering excellent access to transportation through interstate, rail system and river barge traffic. Prospective residents are often surprised to find that life in Lyon County does indeed exist off the water. The school district's website, www.lyon.k12.us, gives an overview of not only the academic aspect of education, but the creative, athletic and extracurricular excellence achieved in the Lyon County school system. The city of Eddyville offers all the necessary conveniences of small-town life including a full service grocery store (where the staff still carries your purchases to the car) and a hardware, farm and lawn supply store where they call customers by name. Eddyville and Kuttawa each boast physicians and pharmacies, so retirees need not worry about medical care.
