After you’ve had your fill of shopping please take the time to try one (or more!) of the great restaurants our community offers. You won’t be disappointed! No discussion of Murray and Calloway County would be complete without mentioning our great public schools and Murray State University. Founded in 1922, MSU quickly became a centerpiece of our community and a defining part of our community team. MSU brings a very special something to our community that we believe you will enjoy. Cultural events, lectures, sporting events and a diverse student community add flavor to Murray and Calloway that is unparalleled in our region. 2017 was a very special year for the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce as we celebrated our 90th anniversary at our annual dinner this summer. So many people from all walks of life came and joined us in our celebration and the love of community was apparent and infectious. We need to remain constantly aware that we are all community “teammates” living in the friendliest smalltown in the USA according to Rand McNally. We are glad you are here and hope you continue to enjoy the many benefits of Murray and Calloway County.  2017 Chamber of Commerce Board Chairman,

NICE DAY

T

he weather in Murray provides a picturesque backdrop and seasonally appropriate precipitation for any and all activities and social gatherings. Whether you want fog, thunder, snow, rain, shine, or crisp, dry leaves underfoot, you’ll find what you seek—even the end of a rainbow. January starts the year with the coldest days (the average high is in the mid-40s) and the greatest chance of snow (4 inches), but schools usually stay open and no child gets tired of the promise of snowmen — they are rare birds in this climate. March and April can fool you with “sweater weather” one day and “freezing fashions” the next, but spring comes fast. Surrounded by four rivers, Murray enjoys humid summers with average daily highs nearing 90, and plenty of opportunities to cool off on the water. Autumn offers the perfect setting for hiking, campfires and football, and is the favorite time for hunters and many fishermen. August through October is the driest season, but the favorite for many folks. “Variety without extremes” is one way of looking at it; “Never being bored with the weather” is another. That’s why it’s easy to say in Murray, “Have a nice day.” They usually are. 

YOUR

HOME TOWN Y

ou can enter Murray, Kentucky, from any of eight compass points. Whether your arrival is via a four-lane highway from the North, Northwest or Northeast, or on a country road that takes you through rolling farmlands lying South, West and East, you can’t help but get the feeling you are coming home. From the north, you will first encounter an industrial park, then a growing number of small businesses, hotels and restaurants, and finally the tall buildings and sprawling grounds of an award winning University. Murray is a college town, steeped in a deep community-born tradition of faith in education and devotion to community. Today, nearly 19,000 residents occupy the seat of Calloway County. The city enjoys a reputation of solid, consistent growth and an enviable quality of life. Its roots go back more than two centuries.

seats be within “a day’s ride” of the county borders, so the larger Marshall County was cut neatly in half from east to west. The southern half became Calloway County, and it needed a county seat. Known for its timberlands, the soil was also ideal (as it is today) for growing tobacco — a crop which was then in high demand in America and Europe. At the center of the new county lay Willistown with its post office, eight streets, more than 100 town lots for homes and businesses, and a tendency to change its name.

livable community

Community life originated 200 years ago in 1818. Popular legend says that David Jones and James Stewart settled the area about ten miles south of Wadesboro, the county seat. They called the place on the bluff over the Clarks River, “Willistown,” after earlier pioneer James Willis. In 1822, the state constitution required that all county

Records show that the town had at least four official names before it was incorporated in 1844 as the county seat. Since that day it has been called “Murray,” to honor the pioneer, civil servant and two-term U.S. Congressman, John L. Murray.

Twenty years later, when Civil War savaged the small farms and villages of Calloway, the community followed the lead of all Kentucky in its neutrality. Although the county saw little military action, hundreds men joined both the Confederate forces or the Union Army. The Confederate Fort Heiman was never completed before Grant’s Union army took it and Fort Henry, just across the Tennessee. The Tennessee was vital to the movement of men and

Union General Lew Wallace marched his forces through Murray on the way to Fort Heiman and, eventually, to Fort Donelson, the first great victory for the Union in the west. During the war, the Union forces occupying Murray are said to have set fire to one side of the town square in retribution for local harassment and the flying of the Confederate battle ensign from a tree on the square. No other military action took place in the county. During the next half century, Murray grew slowly but steadily. Tobacco continued to be a staple crop, but the county also became a source of corn and tomatoes. Small manufacturing concerns prospered, and the region’s faith in the power of education showed in a series of high schools and small colleges that came and went over the course of time. In the early 1920s, however, the desire of Kentuckians to have a teacher’s preparatory school in the western part of the state provided an opportunity for the community to grow. Local attorney and politician, Rainey T. Wells, led an effort to raise money from the community. Over 1,300 businesses and individuals provided more than $100,000 to entice the state commission in charge of locating the new Normal School. With two checks for $50,000 and deeds to land and buildings, and the promise of housing for the students, Wells led the charge that ended in Murray being chosen as the site of the new school. The first classes began in 1922 and its first building in was occupied in 1923. The growth of the school, from “Normal School” to Teachers’ College, to Murray State College to the University it is today, has been steady and welcome. Murray, the city, has changed to reflect the larger, mobile population. Today, Murray State boasts a student body of more than 10,000, with 1,500 faculty and staff in support of the University’s many programs in education, science, industry and the arts. For nearly a quarter century publications such as the Kiplinger Report and U.S. News have recognized MSU as among the best colleges in the south and near the top among colleges

3. Pay attention to extra costs separate from the rent. Are any utilities included? Is there a security deposit? Is the place furnished with a washer and dryer? Be sure to budget for deposits on water and electricity as well. 4. Be prepared to provide the landlord with references or to allow him or her to check your credit report. This is not a frequent request, but some home/apartment owners require it. 5. Contact other tenants who have the same landlord to find out how timely repairs are made. 6. If you don't understand the lease, consult a real estate agent before signing it. Pay close attention to the details of the contract for items like pet allowances, who is responsible for repairs, and the duration of the lease. 7. ALWAYS purchase renter's insurance. Do not assume that the landlord's insurance policy will cover your belongings in the event of a fire or other occurrence. Source (Items 4, 6-7): usnews.com

The little village in the middle of a new county has become a city of significance. For thirty years it has been noticed by organizations and publications who found it to be “The Best Place to Retire,” to be among the “100 Best Communities for Young People,” or to be “The Friendliest Town in the USA.” During the economic slowdown in the first decade of the century, Murray was one of the few Kentucky cities to show consistent growth in population and industry. The balance of agriculture, business, education, healthcare and industry has created a very livable community with economic opportunity on every hand. In 2016, a new business opened almost every 14 days, reflecting a confidence and spirit that justifies the families who have always found it to be, as the University alma mater puts it: “the finest place we know.” 

n 1926, a few business-minded residents of Murray incorporated the Chamber. Originally run by volunteers, the organization existed to collect and circulate valuable information regarding the economic growth of the area and to promote the general welfare of local business. For the last 90 years they have been doing all those things a more — and doing them well.

A GROWING FORCE Today, the Chamber of Commerce continues to promote economic prosperity by “partnering with its members to provide representation, increase job opportunities, encourage community pride and improve the quality of life.” The organization accomplishes this in several ways that include performing statistical research for members, offering seminars on management information as well as training programs for employees and providing members with lists of individuals who have expressed interest in relocating to Murray. Other professional and business organizations also support the growth of business in the region. Murray’s MainStreet program and the Convention and Visitors Bureau are active in supporting such activities as the annual Freedom Fest Fourth of July celebration and the seasonal Downtown Farmers’ Market. In 2017 MainStreet began offering morning seminars for small

business owners on topics such as advertising and hiring practices. One of the oldest associations of business people in America, the Rotary, has one of its most active clubs in Murray. When members join the Chamber, they can also receive advertising through the organization’s Web site, mymurray.com, which features scrolling and stationary ads. In addition, the Chamber hosts networking events for members such as the Annual Dinner and the monthly Business @ Breakfast event which also provides a forum for vital business information from local, state and national leaders.

In the first part of this century, while many counties experienced the devastating effects of recession,

YOUNG PROFESSIONALS OF

MURRAY

Murray and Calloway County remained relatively stable with one of the lowest unemployment rates in Kentucky. Part of this success came from the stability of local manufacturing facilities and part of it comes from the adaptive capabilities of local businesses. The informational hub and organizational force behind those businesses is the Murray-Calloway County Chamber of Commerce and its sister institutions, dedicated to helping entrepreneurs build better businesses. The Young Professionals of Murray is just one example of how business organizations can support the education and interaction of the leaders of tomorrow. Such programs augment — and are enhanced by — the great work of one of the best business schools in the nation at Murray State University. In Murray and Calloway County, you might say, “Our business is business itself.” You would be right, in more ways than one.

Whether because of its excellent educational systems, its safe, healthy atmosphere or its stable manufacturing segment, people continue to move into the area, making Calloway County a very popular place to live. You might wonder why. Retirees certainly find it refreshing, and the town has been voted the top retirement spot in the United States because of its laid-back lifestyle and low cost of living. In 2008, Back Home in Kentucky magazine dubbed Murray one of the top retirement communities in the state, and Retire magazine featured it in a 2007 cover story, describing the town as a “low-cost haven.”

HEALTH & WELL BEING The clean air, the opportunities to engage in healthy exercise, and the availability of fresh foods are not the only contributors to good health and long life in Murray. There’s also a surprisingly broad, remarkably skilled health care community. The Murray-Calloway County Hospital is actually a network of general practice and specialties supported by related facilities like a skilled nursing facility, a hospice house, a cancer treatment center, and a large campus of surgical, laboratory and diagnostic facilities that rival medical establishments in much larger cities. Murray health care facilities are among the most accredited in Kentucky and in 2017, Murray Orthopeadics was named among the top 10% in the nation. Hard to beat! Supplementing the Hospital organization are an independent women’s clinic and a private multispecialty clinic, in addition to private practices in dentistry, chiropractic, counseling and psychology, physical therapy. All of this health care capacity means that Murrayans can skip the long road trip to larger nearby metropolitan areas without risking the quality of care at all.

The Murray-Calloway County hospital is a community hospital. That is, the needs of the community come first; profitability is a not a defining issue. To support quality healthcare for all citizens, The Endowment for Health was created to raise funds through contributions and events. Endowment funds help to provide state-of-the-art technology and practices which might be unaffordable without higher health care prices — or higher taxes.

stay healthy Good care is also provided through the hard work of the Angel’s Clinic and Angel’s Attic. The “Attic,” a thrift shop supported with donations of clothing, furniture and other items, and staffed with volunteers and employees, helps to fund the Clinic. Volunteer nurses and physicians help staff the Clinic, ensuring that financial distress will not interfere with good health in Murray. By any measure, Murray looks like a great place to live and a great place to stay healthy. And, by any measure, it is just that. Whether you visit, reside or relocate, by any measure you’re home.

C

EXCELLENCE IN EDUCATION

alloway County has always had a keen interest in education. Early settlers knew that knowledge saved lives and promoted progress. Just after the Civil War the first public high school was built near the center of Murray. In the early 1900s, Calloway County had a public/private school in Hazel to which students would commute by train from the northern parts of the county, and board with families in Hazel until the week was over. In Kirksey, there was a Normal School for teachers for a time before WWI, until economic downturn drove it out of business — just in time for Rainey T. Wells’ successful effort to establish a college in Murray. Today, education in Murray and Calloway County constitutes a powerful economic force. The acclaimed quality and achievements of schools at all levels ensure employers and entrepreneurs of a skilled workforce and an on-going source of continuing education.

serve approximately 3,000 children. They also spend more than $8,800 per student.

Calloway County Schools

The Calloway County School System provides resources to ensure students and parents receive the best scholastic experience possible. Four Family Resource Centers serve residents within the district, seeking to identify the unmet needs of students and families and mobilizing all available assets to meet them. The district also offers children and parents an online portal for quick access to grading, assignment and attendance information so entire families can stay involved in the learning process.

The Calloway County School System provides children with excellent educations to prepare them for work in the modern world. The system includes three elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. Students can choose from a variety of extra-curricular academic and athletic programs while utilizing the school system’s library/media centers and gymnasiums. Calloway County schools employ roughly 500 faculty members and staff that

In January 2012, these efforts earned the Calloway County Board of Education the Advancing Student Achievement to Proficiency award from the Kentucky School Board Association. The KSBA bestows the honor upon school boards that have met 10 individual standards for advancing child accomplishment including development of a monthly agenda that focuses on student achievement and adherence to that agenda.

A LETTER FROM A

STUDENT LEADER Tori Wood is president of the Student Government Association (SGA) at Murray State. She serves on the Board of Regents, the governing board of the University, and has been a vice-president for SGA, a summer orientation leader, an officer in her sorority and an excellent student. We thought that a student’s perspective on education in Murray might be the best way to conclude this part of our community’s picture, and we were right.

Murray Independent Schools The Murray Independent School System dates back to 1872, when a group of citizens built the first Murray High School in the center of town. Today, that one school has evolved into a small system of three institutions comprised of elementary, middle and high schools. The surrounding community remains as education-minded as ever, and each school features a parent-teacher organization and a booster club for band and athletics. The system also has an active school-business partnership program. Through these organizations, more than 1,000 parents and community members contribute their time and energies to the education of Murray children.

In addition, this school system, small as it may be, has won several awards. For twenty years, Murray Independent Schools have won the national “What Parents Want” award, an honor bestowed upon only 16 percent of the nations 15,571 public school districts. It is also one of 18 districts in the state recognized as an “Outperforming School District” by the world’s

When you’re considering where to go to college, you may ponder many different factors: price, location, degree offerings and so forth. But you may not consider the people that make up that college community. Murray State definitely meets the basic qualifications with ease, having been named “Best Bang for your Buck” by Washington Monthly and “top four-year college” in the state of Kentucky by schools.com. For me, however, among all of Murray State’s many attributes, it isn’t the titles or awards that make Murray State the absolute best place to go to school: it is the people. There is not a day that goes by when Racers don’t consider themselves a family. When you enroll at Murray State, you enroll in being a part of the one and only Racer Nation. Professors don’t just lecture in class but offer extra help during office hours, from today’s course lesson to a student’s daily life struggles. Supervisors at student worker jobs create relationships that will last a lifetime by guiding their students both through college and life after college. Peers not only worry about their own grades but tutor their fellow classmates, because walking across that stage is better when you walk with friends. And the community wasn’t named the “Friendliest Small Town in America” by USA Today for nothing. The citizens of Murray cheer on the Racers at basketball games just as loudly as the students. Yes, Murray State is top notch in many programs and truly is “opportunity afforded” when it comes to dollar signs, but the real difference is undoubtedly the people: the Racer family that makes Murray State University — hands down — the nation’s best choice for attending college.

foremost provider of statistics, Standard & Poor’s. The students themselves have also earned distinguished honors. It was selected as a Third Place Finalist in ACT’S 2013 College and Career Readiness Campaign, and since 1974, 37 National Merit Finalists have graduated from the Murray Independent School System. Since 2012 when the award began, it has been a Kentucky District of Distinction.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS Eastwood Christian Academy has served children in Murray, Ky., since 1978 with the purpose of giving students the highest possible education while simultaneously training them spiritually. The school models this purpose after the development of Jesus described in Luke 2:52, “And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God.”

A member of the American Association of Christian Schools, Eastwood Christian Academy features a halfday kindergarten program along with an elementary and high school that teach 1st through 12th grades. Enrolled students learn to see the world through a Christ-centered point of view, experiencing Bible study, chapels, strong academics, good discipline, Christian friends and protection against negative influences. In addition, they also have access to assets comparable to those in public schools, such as a library, a science lab and a computer lab. As for creative expression, every spring, children have the chance to participate in the All School Program, an event designed to showcase student talents including singing, recitation and acting.

Through its spiritually-minded educational practices, the Eastwood Academy has achieved excellent results. Every year, the school administers the Stanford Achievement Tests and students consistently score in the top 20th percentile nationally. When compared with other Christian schools, the academy’s well-trained attendees score in the top percentile.

Murray State University Established in 1922 as the Murray State Normal School, Murray State University has a long history of education achievement. As it approaches its Centennial year, the fouryear, state-supported public university serves more than 10,000 students. With a strong extended campus and online presence, Murray State supplies high-quality associate, baccalaureate, masters, specialist and doctorate degrees. The school also possesses a student body of dedicated learners, with an average GPA of 3.30 among its freshmen and nationally-recognized graduate programs. That includes a doctoral program in Nursing Practice and in Education, and a nationally recognized programs in Creative Writing and MBA. Several national organizations have honored Murray State University for its excellence. For more than a quarter century the school has ranked on the U.S. News list of Best Colleges. Murray State is ranked among the top 10 public universities and among the top 25 public and private universities in the South. In addition to further recognition by both G.I. Magazine and The Chronicle of Higher Education, the university has made the Forbes Top College List for years.

One of “America’s Best College Buys” just happens to be found in our of America’s best college towns: Murray. 

THE LEGENDARY

RAINEY T. WELLS Murray would not be the same city without its University. And Murray State is most certainly “Murray’s University.” The story is interesting, and so it the tale of the man at the center of the birth of Murray State: Rainey T. Wells. After WWI the return of peace, coupled with the return of soldiers from Europe, inspired hope for greater prosperity. Calloway County was no different from any place else in America, but the local economy was agricultural, and that set limits on growth. It also inspired youth to look elsewhere for opportunity: no land, not much future. So, in 1922 when the O’Rear Commission was established to find a place for a new teacher’s preparation school in western Kentucky, excitement rose in Murray. Several communities prepared for the Commission’s meeting, in Louisville. The little farm town of Murray was regarded as the least likely to succeed. But no one had considered Rainey T. Wells. Wells was a Calloway countian personally devoted to the idea of education as the key to progress. As head of the Murray delegation, he waited his turn to address the Commission. Each of four or five larger, more prosperous towns preceded him, and each promised great things if the new school was sent to their town. At last, Wells rose to address the body. After modest comments about his town and with praise for the others, he announced he had not come to tell anyone what Murray would do; he had come to show what had been done. With that, he presented the Commission with two checks for $50,000, each drawn on one of Murray two banks. He dropped on the desk the deed for 400 acres of land and a fine house, already fit for the school’s first president. Finally, he presented the pledge of homeowners to welcome students into their home at no cost — so anxious was the town for this opportunity to support education in the west. At that point the choice was simple. Murray was the new seat of the western Normal School, and has been producing teachers for the Commonwealth ever since. After a variety of name changes to reflect its growing diversity of programs, it now reigns in the top tier of public universities nationwide. The town still loves the University, for which it fought in 1922. The University is part of Murray, and Murray is part of the University today. And so is the memory of “The Founder” and second president, Rainey T. Wells.

ARTS AND

ENTERTAINMENT

I

t is a year of anniversaries: The Chamber is 90 years old, and so is member business Parker Ford. Playhouse in the Park has been entertaining people for 40 years in a 100 year-old building. But pottery has been created for thousands of years; music is at least as old and theatre was an ancient tradition when Rome was founded. The tradition of art and entertainment is right a home in Murray, so let's start with this year's big celebration.

PLAYHOUSE IN THE PARK: 40 YEARS OF APPLAUSE! Murray-Calloway County Central Park, murder has happened. Spirits have come in the night, and Peter Pan flew through the air. Since 1977, Playhouse in the Park has offered entertainment for the whole family and training for some now-well known theatrical performers. It has been an asset for the community in more ways than one. A victorian freight depot built in 1908 has been home to the Playhouse since the early 1980s, and has undergone two significant renovations to keep up with the community’s desire for drama and arts education.

The open air deck has hosted concerts, weddings and celebrations of all kinds. The Community Theatre, however, has been hard at work since 1977 when “Androcles and the Lion” was first staged as a children’s play in the meeting room of the the Public Library on Main Street. From founding executive director Richard Valentine, who left the theatre to produce and direct in New York, to nationally-known playwright Liz Bussey, to current director Lisa Cope, the Playhouse has always been under professional direction. A board of directors made up of local residents guides the fundraising, selects the season’s entertainment, and ensures that the theatre serves the needs of the community.

“I’m constantly amazed by two things,” says Lisa Cope. “One is how well the community does support this theatre. They come to the shows, they support the actors, they support any kind of program that we try to do. . . .The other thing is the amount of talent that’s

out there in this area. We’re just blown away, time and time again.” In addition to opening six main stage shows per year, Playhouse in the Park also offers programs and theater workshops encouraging people from different age groups to get in touch with their inner thespians. Preschoolers can join WHIRL, a two-month art and dance education partnership between Playhouse and the Murray Art Guild. Children ages 6 to 11 can join the Pail of Tadpoles, a 12-week program that teaches kids the basics of theater and lets them participate in fun, age-appropriate activities while playing dress-up. Froglets is the program into which the Tadpoles matriculate. Eventually, the metamorphosis of the baby thespians completes itself. The Box of Frogs, a troupe serving ages 12 to 18, guides the young adults into more mature theatrical endeavors. Teens with or without experience benefit through exercises that both introduce youth to theatre and augment knowledge they have already cultivated. Participants also have the opportunity to assist in some capacity with a main stage show. There is even a theater group for the community elders— the Old Duffers & Powder Puffers. Murray is a town that celebrates the wisdom of youth and the exuberance of the aged. The group began performing beloved radio skits like “The

Shadow” and “Fibber Magee and Molly,” but members quickly began penning their own material. Cope says the troupe hosts entire evenings at the Playhouse and are very well received. Any person sixty years of age or older is welcome to join, no fees or dues. The Penguin Project is one the Playhouse’s newer programs, centered around children with special needs, which they joined in 2014—the first theater in Kentucky to do so. Developed by Dr. Andrew Morgan, who was Head of the Division of Child Development at University of Illinois, Peoria, the program enhances the development of communication skills and self-esteem. Participants and their families believe the program is life changing. Penguin Project presented Willy Wonka this year, 2017, and participants all felt a little like Charlie with his golden ticket. In summer Playhouse also hosts a two-week children’s summer camp along with a summer season of main events. Area residents who seek to try their talent on stage can find audition dates and schedules posted on the Playhouse website, playhouseinthepark.net, or on Facebook. Those who just love theatre can also contribute by merely

attending the shows, though actual donations of costuming, props, unopened stage makeup products, and volunteer hours are warmly welcomed and appreciated. Ask around for Lisa Cope, Marci Jo Gardener-Edmonds, Don Fleming, Rusty Jones, or any of the other veteran thespians at the little train depot. The theater is “over the hill” this 40th anniversary year, but it’s not slowing down for anyone—Playhouse in the Park is open and the popcorn is hot, fresh, and waiting for you.

OTHER ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT IN MURRAY While Playhouse in the Park gives community members the chance see classic characters like Atticus Finch and Peter Pan embodied by their friends and neighbors, other entertainment venues around Murray and Calloway County also provide residents with fabulous ways to unwind and get excited at the same time. Murray State University has an excellent drama program, with two main stages and an intimate, black box theatre space. Every season, the department produces an array of comedy and drama from a professionally directed company of talented students.

If film is your cup of artistic tea, the seven screens at Murray’s Cheri Theatre bring the best of Hollywood to Chestnut Street. Tickets can be purchased online for convenience. Film also gets the stage at Murray State’s Curris Center Theatre when the Cinema International program screens films from around the world and from across the spectrum of entertainment — for free. Those interested in the visual arts have their choice of four local galleries in which to peruse fine painting, sculpture and photography. Fiction and poetry readings are often hosted here. The Clara M. Eagle Art Gallery and the Curris Center Art Gallery offer art appreciation opportunities on Murray State’s campus, and Gallery 109 & Fairbanks Studio and the Murray Art Guild have facilities in the city. Gallery 121, located at 8332 State Route 121 (south), exhibits the porcelain works for internationally-exhibited artist Wayne Bates. A number of crafters and artists maintain studios for works in clay, wood and graphic arts in and around Murray and, if you’re interested, you have only to ask.

Faculty, professionals and talented amateurs provide music in a number of other venues. Restaurants regularly feature musical talent on weekends, and Murray has produced a number of well-known musical artists such as folk virtuoso Chris Thile of Nickel Creek, now host of NPRs A Prairie Home Companion, and songwriter Alex Harvey, among many, many others. Concerts also take the stage at the CFSB Center on the northern end of the campus where town meets gown. James Taylor and Jeff Dunham have joined artists sharing country, pop, classical and big band in the same venue that features MSU’s well recognized men’s and women’s basketball teams.

All you have to do is get up and get out to treat your ears, your eyes and your passion with the entertainments that abound in the Friendliest Town in America. No wonder people are so friendly: this place is fun! 

Murray State also offers a seemingly-endless array of musical entertainment from its renowned Racer Band on the field at half-time in Stewart Stadium to virtuoso performances in the Performing Arts Hall or Lovett Auditorium on campus. Students culminate their years of training with senior recitals that dot the calendar regularly, and faculty recitals showcase remarkable abilities. Turns out “those who teach can do.”

urray State offers more than the chance to watch exceptional men’s basketball. The school also has a highly successful women’s basketball team, and is enjoying national exposure for women’s soccer and volleyball. In addition, the MSU football team has won eight Ohio Valley Conference titles and produced 18 National Football League players. Students also participate in intramural sports such as cross-country, golf, rifle, volleyball, soccer and tennis. So, why should the college students have all the fun? For the Murray and Calloway County community in general, the area provides plenty of opportunities for recreation. The city has four golf courses, including the Frances E. Miller Memorial Golf Course. The American Society of Golf Architects named Miller Memorial one of the bestdesigned 18-hole courses in America. In January 2008, Tennis Life Magazine dubbed Murray as its first ever “Great American Tennis Town” because of its numerous tennis courts and extensive fan base. Children

and families who wish to enjoy the town’s fresh air and beautiful weather can utilize the Murray-Calloway County Park system, which covers 180 acres of land. There are actually three parks, each geared to different set of needs and expectations. Central park includes a swimming complex, baseball and softball fields, batting cages, a disc golf course, playground and nature trails, in addition to historic buildings, a dog park, and the 40year-old community theatre, Playhouse in the Park. Just north of Central Park is the Bee Creek soccer complex with 17 soccer fields for a variety of age and skill levels. Chestnut Park offers illuminated basketball courts, covered pavilions, playgrounds and a hiking path. The parks provide perfect facilities for little league sports games to keep kids safely active and healthy.

to hike, bike, swim and boat. “LBL,” as the Land Between the Lakes is called by locals, also includes indoor treasures. In the north of the 40-mile stretch of protected nature is the Nature Station with exhibits of wild animals and nature education opportunities. In the center, where Highway 80 crossed The Trace, lies the Visitors’ Center and a fully functional planetarium and museum. A few miles south lies the Homeplace 1859s — a working farm where live is shown as it was in the years before the Civil War. This rugged addition to Murray’s already vast array of recreational choices, provides exercise, fun and learning on cool spring days, colorful fall mornings and fun-filled lakeside afternoons. In Murray there is no shortage of recreational entertainment, and no reason to be idle or bored. Get up, and get out there: you won’t be sorry. 

GETTING

THERE D

on’t make the mistake of thinking Murray is in the middle of Nowhere. In fact, it is in the middle of everything.

Murray is actually near the center of the nation. It is located just 200 miles east of the exact center of population for the United States. The fact that the center seems to be moving steadily south means that Murray is in a good position to grow. Getting there is becoming easier and easier.

Calloway County Airport facilitates excellent air travel for private planes and air freight, boasting one of the longest runways in Kentucky among airports of its size. The 6,200foot runway is more than ample for most traffic and offers a variety of fuels for different engine types. Nearby Barkley Regional in Paducah opens the whole world with connections to Chicago’s O’Hare and Nashville International provides connections to destinations world-wide.

Local people can also travel from the area by air, land and river. The Murray-

Murray lies about 15 miles northeast of the city and allows companies to ship cargo up and down the Tennessee River. In 2012 the area’s transportation system suffered a disaster covered by news outlets worldwide. On January 26, a cargo ship named the “Delta Mariner” collided with the bridge spanning US Highway 68/KY 80. The bridge partially collapsed, affecting surrounding businesses as well as traffic flow. Thankfully, no one was injured. The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet worked as fast as it could to correct the damage and return traffic to normal. Then, over a three-year period, it was replaced by a modern four-lane structure providing even better access to Murray from the east and affording easy access to the Land Between the Lakes for Calloway’s residents and visitors. With the completion of US 80, connecting Murray quickly and conveniently to the Lakes region in the

east and with The Purchase Parkway in the west, the city finds itself within easy reach of a major northsouth Interstate in I-24, and a northeast-southwest artery in the coming I-69. The improvement of Hwy 641 to the south will complete the heavy freight capacity of the city while maintaining its freedom from the heavy congestion often associated with ready access to high speed surface traffic. The quiet, friendly nature of Murray belies the ease with which the whole world can be reached. No matter where you’re going, Murray is a good place to start — and to call “home.” 

ECONOMIC GROWTH AND

DEVELOPMENT A

s you enter Murray from the north, the tall buildings of Murray State University command your attention. As soon as you see the CFSB Center and Stewart Stadium you know that education is a major economic factor in Murray. That’s been true for more than 95 years, as MSU has pumped highly skilled, motivated and trained business leaders and specialists into the region’s growing economy. However, education is not its only industry. Small businesses thrive throughout the town and chain retail stores inhabit the downtown, strip malls and the northern and southern shopping districts. Take a drive down any nonresidential street and you’ll see construction, renovation and building activities which testify to the vigor of the local business economy. In 2016, 2 new businesses opened every week, and the Chamber of Commerce had to order it’s ribbon by the truckload.

of products from small engine parts to windows to food products. Consequently, the stability of these facilities makes the Murray’s manufacturing community a special one. Combine vigorous industry with the necessary support businesses such as transportation, warehousing, equipment suppliers and tool and die specialists, and you have a significant set of employers; businesses that contribute as much to social and commercial activity as they do to tax bases and the economy. When the national economy suffered in the first decade of the Millennium and companies were closing around the world, very few jobs were lost here. In fact, there was modest growth.

financial strain

Still, you cannot miss the large facilities located just off the highways, where you will find the fabricators and manufacturers. Companies such as Briggs & Stratton and Pella Windows, iris Engine Systems, Kenlake Foods and Saputo Dairy Foods USA have established factories in the area and make a variety

Authorities have attributed this happy fact, in large measure, to the quality of the workforce. People in this part of the country are used to hard work and pride themselves on dependability. The lower cost of living also reduces the financial strain on employers, so jobs stay put in Murray when other locations become financial liabilities to corporations. Even when the Murray workforce leaves town it attracts attention. Large advertising agencies in New

“Employers appreciate that kind of common sense dedication and an excellent work ethic,” says MSU Executive in Residence Robert Norsworthy, a 50-year veteran of the advertising business. “People in Murray and west Kentucky accept that reality as normal — and you cannot say that for every community in America.” Murray’s location also plays an important role in its desirability to manufacturers. Just a day’s drive from business and transportation centers like Nashville, Louisville, St. Louis and Memphis, Murray is in the right place. Briggs & Stratton and Pella Windows serve as two of the county’s major industrial employers. The former has a workforce of approximately 1,500 and the latter has a little less than 1,000. The variety of other industrial concerns is further evidence that large manufactures made the right choice. York and Chicago noticed the difference when Murray State students were placed in summer internship programs there. Supervisors and Human Resources directors began to ask, “What’s in the water in Murray?” The answer was simple: Murray State students showed up on time, worked until the job was done, did the work at or above expected levels and did it on time.

If Benjamin Franklin was right, then “the best way to tell the future is by reading the past,” and Murray’s economic growth is in good hands, in a very good place. Families who depend on local industry as the economic base for their health and prosperity may expect to thrive, right along with business, education, healthcare and agriculture.
