Ozy’s Doggy Column RSPCA place ANKC registered breeders in the doghouse with unethical breeders On October 22, 2020, RSPCA NSW announced additional funding will be given by the NSW State Government to their Breeder Compliance Unit addressing animal welfare concerns in the dog breeding industry. Here’s a breakdown of the initiative and how this can affect ANKC registered breeders: • The RSPCA are using advertisements as their method to identity dog breeders • There are 6 RSPCA Inspectors as part of the Breeder Compliance Unit (BCU) • The taskforce was renamed to Breeding Compliance Unit (BCU)

• Proof that your dog’s beddings are changed daily • Proof for the last three years that you treated your dog for worms, fleas, ticks, heartworm, they have been vet checked, vaccinated, brushed/groomed/washed and minor ailments are treated

NOTE: (Please read through the NSW Government Animal Welfare Code of Practice Breeding dogs and cats to see all their guidelines and standards that may affect you.) Dogs NSW has advised ANKC registered breeders to remove their contact numbers from their online advertisements on DOGS NSW’s website and in the Breeder’s Directory in the Magazine showing only their email address due to the audit.

• It is believed that inspections began in December 2020 Polar opposite to commercial puppy farm businesses and backyard breeders, ANKC registered breeders who breed dogs as a hobby, are unfairly targeted by the RSPCA’s BCU inspectors. The following are some conditions, but not limited to, that ANKC registered breeders may be fined for if they are not met when inspected by one of RSPCA’S BCU inspectors:

Dogs NSW is also requesting and relying on written feedback given from its members who have been audited to help supports claims that ANKC registered breeders are unfairly targeted through the audit. That’s all that’s making the headlines this week folks, certainly interesting and difficult times ahead.

• Not having fencing that is 1.8 metres high

It is important everyone sticks together during this difficult time and works together to help stop ANKC registered breeders being unfairly targeted.

• Failure to have your contact details at the front of your property

Stay safe, Ozy

• Failure to have evacuation procedures posted at the front of your property

Queensland News Cristina Fornasier Queensland Columnist Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com Phone: 0418 219 071 Welcome 2021 show season starting sparsely but hopefully we shall be back in full swing now that Covid Restrictions have eased, but please be mindful of keeping up with the basic requirements so a repeat of no shows in 2020 is repeated. I for one have missed catching up socially with so many people.

19th of February was the big announcement of the 6 positions vacant on the board being filled after a month of voting from Queensland Members. Successful in their nominations are: Carolyn Pearen Carolyn Ryan Mandy Schelbach David Weil Netta Bainbridge Vicki Schneider Welcome onto the Board of Directors along with those still in residence. Ulla Greenwood, Barbara Murfet, Patrice Johansen, Margaret Norton, Chris Woodrow Sharron Taylor. Thank you to those that have served out their terms and are not returning at this stage to the Board, your contribution to our hobby is greatly appreciated.

As this is Queensland’s first column for the year a little catch up on what’s been happening so far is in order. Zone One held their annual Festive Fiesta from the 29th to the 31st – many made the trip to Durack to enjoy

the 6 championship shows on offer. The shows used the 1 – 4 system helping to have the shows run quickly for the large entry for each show. Zone Three - Atherton Tableland Kennel Club Inc held their 3 championship shows with the first starting on New Year Eve – due to torrential rain in Cairns a quick meeting with host club saw the rings and canteen moved over to an undercover area within the Show Grounds (thank you to Cairns Show Committee for allowing the undercover area to be used and to DQ for the late change of venue area) The three shows ran smoothly, seeing a range of winners.

Congratulations to the small committee of Atherton for their hard work in getting Zone Three up and running for the year.

February has now seen Zone 2 start their season with many attending Maryborough Kennel Club for their two shows – the great committee kept everyone informed in the lead up from camping to the vendors available for the weekend.

More photo’s from the weekend can be found at Alicia Creative https://www.aliciacreative.com.au/site/maryborough-kennel-club?access=public

This great communication helped the organisers run their shows with ease and from the live feeds and photos, everyone had a good time and enjoyed what was on offer.

Shows to chose from in all zones, with so many having young dogs that have not seen the ring or very little of it, it will be a welcome challenging time.

Big show cluster’s are of course being held over the Easter weekend beginning of April for those not heading off to the Sydney Royal. Bundaberg Canine Club will hold their annual Easter weekend with 4 Championship show and an open show along with the Central Queensland Toy Dog Club holding their championship show in conjunction with Bundaberg CC. Now onto a great breed promotion arranged by Kathryn Winton who generously attended The Sunshine Ladies day with her Belgian’s. Promoting pedigree purebred dogs in the community. 10 year old Merlin and 6 month old Pepper, our homebred Belgian Shepherd Tervuerens, visited the Redbank Gardens Aged Care Centre on the 12th February for a presentation (enrichment experience) for the residents. Not sure how much of the presentation words will be retained by the residents, but they sure will remember

how polite, friendly and well mannered the dogs were. It was young Pepper’s first outing as part of our Mirribandi Belgian Shepherd promotions team, and she exceeded expectations with her soundness and stability in this environment so very different to home. Tears of happiness were shed by resident dog lovers no longer able to have a pet to themselves.

puppy and she would be called Pepper. So this morning Mum and Dad arrived early to take procession of “Pepper” after a training session so they can keep up with basic obedience until they can join in puppy pre school and then obedience they headed back to Brisbane. Make-AWish Foundation had organised for the presentation to be done at midday with Luke knowing nothing.

Merlin and Pepper will indeed go back to see their new friends

As you can see from the photos it looks like Pepper and Luke will be good mates. Luke is in remission so have many, many,

my heart and brought me to tears. So today was a very special day for a special boy, through Make-A-Wish foundation. Make -A-Wish contacted me some weeks ago and asked if I had a special puppy for a special boy. Many that know me well and those that have brought puppies or adults from me know that it’s not an easy ride you go through the third degree and this was no different. Everything had to be right from my side of things and also for the puppy after lots of conversations and a special meeting with Mum, grandmar and Luke who still had no idea, he thought he was just meeting beagle puppies and adults to see if a Beagle was going to be right for him and the family. After his visit he commented that he would love a girl beagle

Silver Poodles Most people do not even know that silver poodles exist! In Europe and the USA they are termed grey. They are in higher numbers in those countries then here in Australia, so are more accepted and recognised as part of the poodle group. Unlike the usual poodle colours of black, white, and brown which are the most common colours seen around the community as pets and in the show or sports arena, there are also the other rare colours silver, apricot, and

K9online.com.au | 31

Queensland News Column

blue. These colours are all allowed to be shown, however very difficult to breed and for the apricot very few show breeders delve into this colour as difficult to breed related to limited available lines. This colour also carry a particular gene that often causes poor skin pigment and colour dilution making them fade. At birth they will be very dark but as they age gradually fade out to cream or white with sprinkling of light orange in the coat, or a very pale apricot verging to beige. Brown is behind the apricot so they also can be born very dark brown, and then fade to various lighter shades as they age. Silver and blue poodles are indeed unique not only is there no DNA colour marker to identify which parent will produce these colours. Both are born jet black and breeders identify them by tiny strands of grey/ silver paw pad hair. Some puppies have strong thick paw hair others only one or two strands.

It is very desirable to have any poodle irrespective of colour be of a good quality in conformation, temperament and health. Silver poodles can be seen in all three varieties with some variance in their coat colours from platinum, to steel, through to gun metal. Silvers have a softer temperament to the other colours why this is we don’t know, but with good handling and confidence building as pups they develop well. In Australia there are many more toy silver breeders, then miniature or standards. This makes ongoing breeding difficult as to continue silver lines they must be bred silver to silver or a white who may be known to carry the silver gene. ~ Paula Morgan

Show Results Michelle Hickey’s Great Dane ~ Riesenhalft It’s In His Kiss with limited showing has made an impression thus far in his young life

As these pups age around 6 to 7 weeks breeders shave the face, feet and neck and the skin hair is very obviously silver, or in the blues it can be like a faded black or a very dark gun metal colour and the coat has a tendency to reflect a brownish tinge in sunlight. By 5 months you start to see further fading and blending of more silver hair throughout the puppies black coat, most silvers or blues are completely transitioned into their adult colour by 2 to 3 yrs. If a silver poodle is injured through accident leaving an open wound, ant bites, chewing of leg or surgery the affected area new hair grows through jet black and takes some months to grow out as silver again. Sometimes it never reverts back especially where it is from surgery. They also darken in patches of their coat as new wool growth occurs, if your silver is in full show coat and being trimmed regularly, the new growth called guard hairs come through black so the dogs coat has a shadowy effect. The blues look like dull blacks and are not as susceptible to the same issues as the silvers are. Once they reach their final coat change it is very navy blue, hard to pick for the inexperienced eye.
