When “current breed type” does not equal correctness, the best dog can lose because, in many rings, the fatal flaw is being a stand-out.
A dog show friend, absent from the sport for several years, attended some local shows. Welco ming the opportunity to view dogs in general after her sabbatical, she became visually distressed. Her despair increased when a “less than average” dog received BOB. The waning quality in her beautiful breed broke her heart. She stated it would be a wasted effort to show a dog correct to the breed standard today, as some judges feel compelled to award dogs conforming to most of the entries.
Observing other breeds, she remarked on the lack of neck, restricted front movement and the lack of rear follow-through; we discussed “gay tails” and breed type/style variances. We watch faulty mo vement and saw coats dragging the ground. Weak pasterns and sickle hocks completed the pictu re. She wonders what causes this to happen to functional dogs in such a short time. It seems the correct dogs have fallen victim to what one may refer to as the “Perfection of Mediocrity”.
Increasingly, the best dog you’ll ever breed may be the most challenging dog you will ever finish. It will be the “odd man out” and look different from most dogs in the ring. Why? Because some judges, insecure in a breed and lacking courage, choose to leave out “different” dogs rather than stick their neck out. That is understandable, but should those lacking confidence be passing judgment on ano ther’s dog?
My old mentor said, “The pendulum of breed type swings to and fro but those remaining true to the breed standard triumph in the end.” Those dedi cated breeders have the knowledge to restore a breed to its initial form once it hits bottom.
“A judge can’t go wrong by putting up winners conforming to the majority of the type of dogs in the ring on a given day.” Said a respected dog per son of long-standing while at a recent conference. My response was, “Surely not!” Well, I believe it now! After observing a judge from ringside, I wat-
ched two outstanding examples leaving the ring because they looked different from the rest with a short neck, sickle hock, and smaller than average dogs lacking side gait that toddled around the ring like fuzzy little caricatures of the breed.
This strange “look-alike” perspective is taking over many breed rings, not just among judges. Asking an average breeder what their breed standard said about head planes, the response was: “What are parallel planes?” Reading a breed standard and applying it can be two different things. Judges should have the ability to articulate why one dog wins over another. So is that why they make terminology common among breed stan dards - to make it easier for judges?
Please step forward if anyone can use the same language to describe a Bulldog and a Whippet. In my humble opinion, removing the “point system” from some of the old breed standards has had a negative effect. In a final decision between two comparable individuals, one has an idea of where to hang their hat regarding prioritizing.
It is a “Judas Kiss” to any breed when a judge puts up a dog simply because it looks like the majority in the ring. It encourages people to breed to “winners” rather than to a breed standard. In judge’s education, they address soundness, but breed type takes priority. Educators assume that new appli cants understand the structure and corresponding movement. Breed type without soundness is as detrimental to a breed as soundness without breed type. A bad front and bad rear working in sequence produce “balance”. Do two wrongs make a right? The goal is “a balance between breed type and soundness”. A breed must be able to walk to the water bowl without falling over its own feet! Sadly, some faults are so prevalent today that they are viewed as “virtues”.
This brings us to the next question. Are not judges “protectors of the breed standards?” Judges’ education is not at fault. Perhaps the problem is what some judging applicants need to bring to the table! It is a privilege to pass judgment on a breed. Still, one must understand “Basic Dog Construction

Should we breed to win or breed to the breed standard and expect judges to judge to the breed standard?
Shouldn’t breeders and breeder/judges be cons cientious about exhibiting correct dogs for public observation? Some exhibitors handle dogs giving little thought to their quality or future effect on a breed. Breeders are responsible for putting out “the best of the best” rather than a dog that wins simply because it “looks like the rest.” By so doing, they are sending false signals to both ringside and other judges.
When judges say, “This must be what the breeders want as the ring is flooded with this style”, it is detrimental to any breed.
Advertisement does not always mean a dog repre sents “breed excellence”. Breeders and exhibitors are responsible for promoting only dogs that do represent their breed standard and selling those that do not qualify as pets! Advertising carries some influence, and if a judge selects winners on advertising alone, they do a disservice to the breed, and it reflects on their ability as a judge.
“Preference or priority judging” can be detrimental to breeds as judges become caught up in selecting for individual virtues, be it eye, ear set, feet,
or coat colour. Virtues are important, but a dog should “fill the eye”. A single virtue cannot take precedence over a plethora of faults! And some faults are so prevalent today that they are viewed as “virtues”. That is why some specialty judges “put up pieces” rather than the whole package. “Pieces judging” can often explain why many judges take so long to judge a class. Personal preference judging should only come into play when two dogs are equal according to the breed standard.
Sadly, many breeders and owners turn to other dog sports, choosing to refrain from participating where such breed type variety confuses both judges and ringside.
Kind regards
Narelle Hammond

Although summer is supposedly on its way it’s still been in most cases cold, wet and windy with just 5 shows for the month Tasmania definitely feels left out when most other states are having 4, 5 & 6 shows per weekend and mid week shows. Westbury Ag Society held 2 shows on the first weekend BIS Saturday was the Staffordshire Bull Terrier owned by Bustabones Kennels Sup Ch Bustabones Try Whistling This. Sunday saw the Flat Coated Retriever Ch Kellick Criminal Intent owned by B Evans take the top spot, the following weekend saw am/pm shows held by Huon Ag So ciety BIS am show was the Flat Coat and the PM show it was the Affenpinscher Sup Ch Majomarc Dartagnan V Kazarki owned by V Grasso/T Coun sell the last show on the 19th November was the Southern Classic where Mrs T McDonald chose the Welsh Corgi Cardigan Ch Cormead Pied Piper owned by C. Judges exam results are just to hand and with just 2 candidates sitting this year there was 100% pass rate. Congratulations to Jodi Fraser on passing group 1 and Daniel Aitchison on passing Group 6.
There are just 4 shows left for us this year in Tas mania so good luck to those competing in the final shows for 2022.

November began with a hiss and a roar with a four-show weekend in Levin staged by Pencarrow & Upper Hutt Kennel Clubs which are operated by Martyn & Lisa Slade with the support of a very small committee. The panel of Australian judges (with the obligatory NZer) attracted a great entry of 600+. The venue was fabulous, the organisation was first class and the prize money was worth having (unlike a few other shows recently which must be pushing it to comply with the show regulations!) I was quite surprised there were not more South Islanders there but I suppose with the calendar crammed between now and Christmas and the cost of travel, people are picking and choosing. We went and had a great weekend, but only a little change out of $1000 for the weekend. That said, when we arrived at the venue, I came to the conclusion that North Island dog-showers must be far more affluent that we South Islanders – some of the set ups for camping left me wondering what sort of palaces they lives in for the other days of the week!
