Ozy’s Doggy Column RSCPA temporarily suspends auditing of ANKC registered breeders Auditing of registered breeders with DOGS NSW has been suspended, in exception to animal welfare complaints, as the RSPCA turn their attention to larger scale breeders.

• (ii) It is kept or used for an activity by the greyhound racing industry participant who is registered under the Greyhound Racing Act 2017 to carry on that activity

Members of the Shooter, Fishers and Farmers Party are siding with hobbyist dog breeders, as DOGS NSW board members President Dr Karen Hedberg BVSc and Honorary Solicitor Mr Malcolm McDonald, meet with Mark Banasiak NSW Upper House Member and Philip Donato, MP Member for Orange, to discuss the unfair auditing of registered breeders with DOGS NSW.

• With our present legislation, an Animal Trader is someone who trades/gives/sell animals, and this affects a broad range of people whether or not they breed commercially, or on a hobbyist small scale. • The proposed changes mean the above would only apply if a taxable income results from breeding.

Here’s an overview of what happened: • Efforts are being made to change what animal trade means in the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act • This proposed amendment would mean animal welfare agencies have to meet checks and balances before inspecting the properties of small-scale breeders or seizing animals because the owner breached the Code for Breeding Dogs and Cats

That’s a wrap on this week’s column folks, great to see some hope and light at the end of tunnel. I’d like to give a big wrap and pat on the back, to all those attending the dog shows held in NSW that haven’t been cancelled due to the extremely wet conditions we are having at the moment. Until next time, - Ozy.

Proposed amendment: • Meaning of “animal trade” • [1A] Section 4(1), definition of “animal trade” • Omit the definition. Insert instead• Animal trade means a trade, business or profession• (a) the proceeds of which have generated income for a person in the previous financial year on which income tax would have been payable under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 of the Commonwealth, even if the person were to have had no other source of income, and • (b) In the course of which an animal is kept or used for a purpose prescribed for the purposes of this definition, but not if- • (i) The animal is a greyhound, and

New warnings about ticks transmitting deadly disease to dogs in Australia Writen & Supplied by Companion Animal Network

Ehrlichiosis is a deadly disease in dogs caused by the bite of a brown tick infected with an exotic pathogen Ehrlichia Canis (E.canis) and animal health authorities are on alert for it spreading to other parts of the country. In May 2020, E.canis was detected in a small number of dogs in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. This is the first detection of E.canis in dogs in Australia that had not been imported from overseas and is a notifiable disease, according to the NSW Department of Primary Industries. Animal health authorities are concerned that the tick-borne disease will soon hit other parts of the country. Companion Animal Network Australia (CAN) National Executive Trish Ennis warned, “We have reports of confirmed cases of infected dogs in various parts of Australia, including Broome in Western Australia and the APY Lands in South Australia.” Although infected dogs do not directly transmit the disease to other dogs, the transmission occurs through infected ticks, particularly the brown dog tick which is widespread in mainland Australia. “Investigations into the origin of the infection in both northern WA and the Northern Territory are ongoing with no obvious leads at this time, which means it’s possible the disease has been present in some regions for some time,” said Ms Ennis. In early 2021, ticks infected with the bacteria that causes ehrlichiosis were also found in South Australia’s far north. Veterinarian Dr Julie Bellamy, CEO Animal Welfare League SA, said, “Ehrlichiosis is a very serious disease with a high mortality rate in chronically infected dogs. Infected animals require veterinary treatment and supportive care. “Dog owners must be vigilant. There are a number of things you can do to help prevent this disease in your dogs, including placing your dog on a tick control program. Dog owners should consult with their veterinarians on the risk and preventative measures appropriate for their geographical area,” she said. The National Pest and Disease Outbreak website advi-

Run your fingers through your dog’s coat over their skin and feel for abnormal bumps, paying particular attention to the head and neck, inside their ears, on their chest, between their toes and around their mouths and gums. The initial clinical signs of E.canis infection can include: fever, lethargy, enlarged lymph nodes, loss of appetite, discharge from the eyes and nose, weight loss and bleeding disorders. If your dog is showing any of the above clinical signs, please contact a vet immediately. “We recommend you contact your veterinarian if you have a dog that is unwell because early treatment provides the best chance for them to recover,” Dr Bellamy added. A spokesperson from the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development, WA advised, “In areas where brown dog ticks are present or dogs to be rehomed are sick, rehoming agencies are encouraged have dogs tested for E. canis before moving them to ensure they are not spreading the disease to another area. In Western Australia, movement conditions apply to dogs being moved out of the Kimberley, where the disease is established.” For more information, visit www.agric.wa.gov.au/ehrlichiosis.

Nala – SAFE WA Nala came from North West Australia. She was left to fend for herself when her owner left over Christmas. With the searing heat, she took herself the best spot possible, next to the ice machine in the local pub, becoming a welcomed part of the Public Bar. The Publican, knowing they couldn’t keep Nala, contacted the local ranger Hamish to collect her. Hamish found someone who knew the owner who said they would take Nala while she was away. Nala escaped and returned to the Pub. “She was a beautiful gentle dog,” said Hamish. Hamish contacted the owner who agreed to have Nala rehomed. He took her directly to SAFE in Karratha where she was checked by the vet team. She was skin and bone and very lethargic. Following her vet check she was found to be anaemic, covered in ticks and was suffering from the E.canis virus. Following isolation, treatment and wonderful care by her foster carers, Nala recovered fully. She has now been re-homed to an amazing couple who are spoiling Nala and she is loving them.

THE END OF LOCKDOWN AND YOUR PUPPY OR DOG Writen & Supplied by Royal Canin

COVID-19 affected not only our way of life but also that of our pets. Many of us experienced significant periods confined to our houses and working from home became the new normal. Many people also decided to purchase or adopt a dog or puppy during this period. While all that extra time together can help strengthen the bond you share and make some training simpler, it does mean there may have been fewer opportunities for exploring, experiencing and interacting with the outside world. Now, as the restrictions are being lifted and regular life begins to resume again, you may need to spend extra time socialising your dog or puppy. WHY IS PUPPY SOCIALISATION IMPORTANT? Socialisation is a process of learning in which your puppy is introduced to the world. Any new experience you share with them is part of this socialisation and contributes to their ability to master communication. It could be meeting a new person or another dog, getting in a car, hearing a hairdryer, or just going to a new location such as your local vet clinic. The first few weeks of your puppy’s life is critical for socialisation. However, it’s essential to continue socialisation and familiarisation even when they’re an adult dog. Without socialisation, a puppy may become fearful or even aggressive in certain situations or towards people and other animals.

20 | K9online.com.au

When should I begin socialisation training? Dogs are at their most receptive when they’re puppies, aged between 3 to 14 weeks of age. During this period, they’re quick to form attachments with others and are particularly sensitive to their environment. While these early encounters play a massive role in a dog’s future emotional balance, socialisation doesn’t end at 14 weeks. They will continue to learn throughout their life, and their reactions to familiar situations may change – a young dog may be comfortable being in a car at first, but a negative experience may make them anxious later on. Likewise, adult dogs who were not appropriately socialised as puppies can learn new behaviours and become comfortable in previously stressful situations. However, it does require a different approach to socialising puppies.

How to socialise a puppy It’s essential to consult your vet about when your puppy is ready for socialisation; this will be based on their age and vaccinations status. You can then build on the socialisation basics taught by the puppy’s mother. The aim is to let them see, hear, touch, smell, and interact with the world around them as much as possible while they’re still under 14 weeks of age. Each new interaction they have with a dog, a person, or within their environment will act as a reference point in later life. The more positive experiences they have as a puppy, the better. But negative experiences will have a lasting impact too! Like you would with an older dog, you should carefully and safely socialise your puppy by constantly watching their behaviour during an experience or encounter and managing their response.

Suppose you’ve been unable to take your puppy outside as often as you’d like during COVID-19 restrictions. You might begin by carrying them around outside, visiting a friend’s home, or interacting with dogs you know are fully vaccinated and well-behaved. Social distancing does make puppy and dog socialisation harder than before, but you can still observe the world together and interact with people and other dogs from a safe distance. Always try to pace your socialisation training to suit your puppy’s comfort level – some have innate behaviours that make them naturally anxious, while others may always be excited.

indoors. How To Socialise An Older Dog It’s essential to be realistic when socialising adult dogs. If they missed out as a puppy, they’d be starting from a disadvantage, and it may not be possible to make them comfortable with everything they encounter. Depending on your dog’s background, your goal might be to introduce enough stimuli so they can feel safe and secure in their immediate environment and not the entire world at large. The key thing to remember is not to rush an older dog. Unlike a puppy, they typically won’t absorb new experiences as quickly, so you must work at a pace that suits them. You also should consider if they’re in any pain (e.g. arthritis) or have other medical conditions that will make socialisation more difficult for them. If this is the case, reach out to your vet for advice and support. The key to successful socialisation is to start in an environment in which your dog is already comfortable and slowly progress from there. For example, if you’re trying to introduce friends and family, have them approach your leashed dog slowly and one at a time, keeping their voices low and calm. Let them give your dog familiar toys and if they show any signs of stress or anxiety, end the session and try another time. It’s important to finish a socialisation session positively, so remember to bring toys and treats. It’s all about encouragement, positivity, patience, and rewards. Sometimes you may encounter setbacks, but the long-term benefits are worth the perseverance. Any time they make progress, reward them with praise and their favourite toy or treat. As treats are a sometimes food only, they mustn’t make up more than 10% of your dogs daily caloric intake. Otherwise, you’ll need to consider reducing their daily ration size.

SOCIALISING ADULT DOGS Unfortunately, not every dog will have been adequately socialised as a puppy. Whatever the reason, if your dog missed that early window, you may find introducing unfamiliar experiences, people and animals to them more challenging. But it’s certainly still possible for your dog to progress with some patience and a slow and steady approach. However, you may need to seek expert advice from your vet or a veterinary behaviourist in some cases. You may also find new behaviours develop over time or appear with a change in routine or environment. Your dog during the pandemic may have grown used to you being around more regularly and may experience separation anxiety when they’re left alone. They may also have grown cautious of other dogs after so much time

7 Tips For Working From Home With Pets Writen & Supplied by Dr Fiona Patterson

As we navigate our way through life in the time of COVID-19, many of us are sharing our workspaces with others – including our pets. I’m fortunate to work for a wonderful company that not only offers flexible working arrangements, but also supports pet-friendly workspaces. This means that whether I’m at the office or working from home, I get to spend lots of time with my best mate Kelly dog.

Get active first thing

Here I share my tips on how to make working from home with a pet – both positive as well as productive:

When you get involved in playtime, you both get to share wonderful bonding time as well as the opportunity to create precious memories.

Have a plan for a return to ‘normality’ If working from home isn’t in your long-term plans and you’ll be returning to work or school at some point, now’s the time to prepare your pet for that transition. In my last article, I offered some advice which you might like to keep in mind when considering the ideas below. 24 | K9online.com.au

Before you sit down at your desk, make activity a priority. Take a walk if time allows or play some games. Dogs will enjoy fetching games, while my dog Kelly prefers a game of chasey. Games aren’t just for dogs – cats need playtime too! By stimulating their hunting instinct, your cat won’t be able to resist joining in by pouncing and jumping.

Have a cuddle After an exercise session it’s time for a quick snuggle. Dogs are social animals who innately want to bond with others and while cats are famous for being free spirits,

many enjoy being held and stroked.

Get active again

Oxytocin peaks in both people and their dogs when they interact positively so have a cuddle and release some feel good hormones. Now you’re ready for work!

I like to break up the working day with a couple of dog walks – especially if I get stuck on a task. It’s amazing the number of times a creative solution to a problem pops into my head when Kelly and I are out pounding the pavement.

Keep a to-do list Compiling a daily to-do list is a great way of planning out your day. Not only does ticking off those tasks feel rewarding, you can also schedule in times for a coffee break, meals, toilet breaks etc

If you don’t have time for a walk, consider a short training session and start teaching your pet a new trick. If you’re really pressed for time – offer your pet a different toy to maintain the novelty factor. Let your pet have some alone time It’s important for pets to feel happy spending some time by themselves. A cosy bed or crate works well for dogs. Cats tend to enjoy a resting spot somewhere high up such as on a cat tower. Alternatively, a cat igloo can help them feel snug and secure. Time alone should be viewed as a positive thing, so encourage your pet to love their resting spot by offering toys and treats. If your pet starts to whine in your absence, ignore them. When they are calm, return with a treat. You could also try slowly moving your pet’s bed away from your workspace over a number of days as needed.

Keep your pet occupied While you’re busy with colleagues on Skype, provide your pet with some ‘work’. Offer your dog a chew toy or a sustained-release food toy like a Kong or Buster Cube stuffed with kibble and peanut butter. Cats that are motivated by food will also enjoy a food puzzle toy. Another option – that’s easy and cheap, is a cardboard box. Cats love playing hide and seek in them, and you can easily replace this toy when the current box is worn out. Just don’t let yourself be too distracted by any hilarious feline shenanigans!

Hopefully these tips will help you establish a work from home environment that you – and your pet will both enjoy! Until next time, Dr Fiona

With your pet kept busy you can focus on work matters. Remember that food you use in toys should be counted as part of your pet’s overall calorie intake to avoid over feeding.

Queensland News Cristina Fornasier Queensland Columnist Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com Phone: 0418 219 071 Can you believe how fast March has come and gone! Shows are starting to ramp up for all the zones especially for those that have patiently been waiting in Zone 2 and Zone 3. Huge weekends coming up for Central and North Queensland with Bundaberg hosting their annual Easter shows which will draw large numbers from all zones. Ingham Kennel & Obedience Club and Cloncurry & District Canine Club are combining their shows over Easter to make a huge weekend of 6 shows for all to attend.

A follow up from last months article on Luke and Pepper. Pepper was granted as a Wish from Make A Wish Australia to Luke. Luke is doing very well and we wish he continues to stay safe and well. Pepper and Luke have completed their Puppy Magic Certificate at Bonnies’ Obedience and Puppy School. Pepper has learnt to heal, sit, drop and stay.

With breaking news on the 29/03/2021 for a 3 day lockdown due to reported Covid Cases in Brisbane this may jeopardise these clubs from conducting their much anticipated shows, I certainly hope that it is not the case and I’m reporting all your adventures and wins in the May edition. Uncertain times for all. A lovely note from Sharron Bell on the process of Pepper and Luke

Luke is super proud as his Pepper is totally awesome. They love their walks together but Pepper can still be a typical beagle and will follow her nose. Pepper is very much loved and has really integrated herself into the family.

30 | K9online.com.au

We also had the pleasure of introducing the new little star to our show team for 2021. “Markka” - Oui Oui Keep The Change owned and bred by Jenni Cameron who at his very first time in the show ring won 3 x challenge dog, 1 x Runner Up of Breed, 2 x Best of Breed, 3 x Junior in Group converting one to Junior in Show. He came away with 42 points at only just 12 months old.

I’m just so proud of them both and what they have achieved. He is one very level headed boy and a loving family to boot which has given him that grounding. And to think I nearly gave the Make A Wish Australia the brush off, I’m so glad now that I took the time and of course they weren’t just going to get a puppy at the click of their fingers. The joy Pepper has given to Luke and his family is unmeasurable. (included this last bit from Sharon as a reminder to keep an open mind) ************ From John King of Khingsahl Kennels What a return to dog shows for John and Ray Scells with Oscar – Sup Ch Standing Ovation At Khingsahl (Imp NZ) at his first show back in Queensland in 13 months winning 3 x Best Exhibit In Group converting one to Runner Up Best in Show at the Gladstone Kennel Club Championship show weekend.

To say we are over the moon with Oscar and Markka is an understatement as both gave their best in very trying conditions and we are now looking forward to an exciting 2021. Big thankyou to the judges who appreciated the quality of these dogs, Sue Foster (SA), Heather Jones (WA) and Rosemary Green (Qld). I must say it was a pleasure to have interstate judges back on the panel and a huge congratulations to the Gladstone Kennel Club for such well run shows. No show photos because of the weather but I am sure there will be plenty more opportunities. Thank you to all the lovely people with your complements of the condition of Oscar and how he performed and on how stunning Markka looked and performed in the ring. Jenni was inundated with congratulations phone calls from her many French Bulldog friends who were waiting with anticipation of hearing of Markka’s results. ************

************ From Anthea Adamopoulos Two shows for us this weekend and we received Two Best In Shows. Badru certainly didn’t let me down. From the moment I turn the hydrobath on and get out ‘his’ shampoo to get everything ready to bath, he knows it’s for a show. Probably a long weekend for me, but definitely one to remember. At the first show Badru received BIS under Mr Iain Hinde . And 2nd show winning under Diana Norman, this was a memorial show for Sandy Abraham. Many thanks to Brett Abraham for the most beautiful rosettes. It definitely will be a day for me to remember as it was 7 years ago today my father passed. I guess I had 2 people watching over.

As always we are super proud of boy and look forward to what the future holds for him. Marcus turns 3 in May and His show career to date leaves me speechless.

************ From Kylie Ritter Master Marcus and I ventured out to the Redcliffe Kennel Club show yesterday in very trying heat, my boy never let me down, it was a fabulous day and well run show. As the show was the memorial tribute to Sandy Abraham, the entry was a huge for us with 950 dogs attending. Marcus was awarded Best in group under Ms T Parker (NSW), then on to Best in Show 2nd under Ms D Norman (Qld) , this fabulous win makes Marcus The top Standard Poodle in Australia and number 5 Australia wide all breeds in the dogsonline point score.

************ From Kim Stone Miss Saffi aka MBIS Supreme Ch Cordmaker Mellow Yellow had her time to shine. Winning Back To Back BEST IN SHOW NEUTER at the Pine Rivers and Redcliffe Shows.

Granddaughter Jorja was unable to handle so girlfriend Lisa Carpenter and hubby Michael stepped in. Thankyou to judges Mrs C Mc Greevey, Mrs D Norman and Mr G Vernan for awarding our baby girl. Well done to the committee for running the show under Covid restrictions.

************ From Paul McArthur Steele ~ Saxonee Forged By Fyre Has now attained his SUPREME TITLE Breeding a supreme champion boxer, “Saxonee Take No Prisoners” (Turk), was a dream come true. To have followed up with breeding another Supreme Ch, who has the added accolade of being an Australian Boxer National Best In Show winner, is beyond any expectations I might have had. I give my greatest thanks to Jody, Eryn and Dominic for being on the end of his lead, the same lead worn by Turk during his stellar career. But a very special thank you to Jody as he would not be the dog he is without you.

love of the sport is undeniable. Ann was truly surprised to receive this well deserved award. Congratulations Ann ************ News from: Mackay Kennel Club

Huge Congratulations to Gay Westmore for receiving the amazing award of Dogs Qld Life Membership. Gay has been competing and contributing in the dog world in varies roles over the last 40 years. Her list of achievements are long and spread over several sectors of the dog world. The DWDCQ would like to express our sincere congratulations to Gay for your years of dedication to the dog world. Congratulations to Ann Shannon on receiving “Life Membership” to the DWDCQ. Ann has been a member of the club and a DWD judge since its inception in 2009. Her roles within the club have been many as well as competing in the last couple of years. I’m sure Ann has DWD flowing through her veins as her

2020 became quite a different year in all our lives due to COVID-19. It was to be a celebration year for our club with the planned Centennial Show Weekend that was to be held in June 2020 and then optimistically delayed until September. However, we had to go with the flow of the impact of the Corona Virus on the Dog World and are now holding these delayed Centennial celebrations with a Rosette Three Show weekend on the 5th and 6th June 2021. The Mackay Kennel Club has managed to ride the COVID storm very well thanks to the support of the Mackay Regional Council with a grant to organisations impacted by COVID of $5000 plus a further recent Community Grant of $5000 towards the work being undertaken at our clubhouse and grounds. The club was also successful in is submission to the Community Gambling Funds Grant and received $19990 also being used towards improvements. The Mackay Regional Council has also provided support to our small Club with an event grant that is being used towards our 100 year celebrations. The support from a regional Council of our Club and its activities has been greatly appreciated and are exemplary. So it is an exciting time for the Mackay Kennel Club at our Clubhouse and grounds with the replacement of the existing two show rings permanent fencing that includes designated assembly areas, grading and top-dressing of our rings, painting and electrical work being undertaken. Our plans for the format of our dog rings were submitted and approved by Dogs Queensland. The planned purchase of temporary fencing will allow us to have a third ring which we will be trialling to assist with running our shows quickly giving us all more time to socialise and enjoy the company of our fellow exhibitors as well as allowing our travelling exhibitors an earlier finish time for their return journeys.Temporary fencing will be used to define the common boundary between rings one and two. This will allow us to remove it for General specials thus creating one big ring for the running and viewing of General Specials.

look forward to seeing everyone and celebrating this event with all in attendance at our 3 Championship all Rosette Centennial Show weekend on 5th and 6th June 2021. We look forward to having some great shows and enjoying a cuppa and cake with everyone! ************ Raffles & Funraising: A lot of club’s have been struggling to keep their heads above water with the restrictions Covid have put in place. Many are running fantastic raffles to raise much needed funds – a lot of these tickets can be purchased easily through Show Manager or some clubs directly. Sarina Kennel Club have a cash raffle running for $500 For a small club with only limited numbers of members, the commitment of our dedicated members is great. It just shows how together, each and every one of us, can make a huge contribution and continue to be an essential part of the Dog Show World. As our club moves forward into the next century of its Club history, we look forward to welcoming new members into our Club. The Mackay Kennel Club is focussed on listening to everyone’s input and suggestions as no one person has all the answers and decisions are made transparently by members at Club meetings. Subject to any further changes with COVID requirements, we will be able to offer limited camping on site and will have 3 interstate judges. Our immediate neighbours, the Miniature Train Club have agreed to not hold anything on our show weekend which will allow camping down and around their Club’s leased area. The Mackay region also has a number of dog-friendly caravan parks, motels and accommodation. The Club will be putting up a list of these on our Facebook site in the next few weeks.
