Ozy’s Doggy Column Transporting Puppies During Lockdown G’day everyone! As things are ever so slowly but surely warming up weather and dog world wise, an important, relevant, and popular topic being asked from both breeders and prospective puppy buyers is the transportation of puppies from breeders to their delighted new owners. The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries/ Quarantine Division has released some important information in regard to this topic. • Evidence is needed of your residential address and the reason you are travelling; a permit may be required while travelling

• Breeders travelling in LGA of Concern in the Greater Sydney Area need a permit to enter as of 28 August. I can imagine animal transport companies would be very busy during these difficult times. I hope everyone is keeping well and safe! Take care, Until next time, - Ozy.

• The National Agriculture Code has listed the following as essential workers: • Animal saleyards, knackeries, and animal transportation services (including livestock and pets) •

It is advised if possible that travel be postponed

• Those collection of a pet is considered ‘reasonable excuse’ if compliance is met which depends on the locations • Greater Sydney residents that don’t live in a declared area leaving their residence to obtain a pet (a good) for their household needs or a service for their pet needs can in the following circumstances: • It is obtained “locally” (ie, in same LGA, or in another LGA where the destination is <5kms away); or • It is obtained elsewhere (ie, not locally) if it is not reasonably available “locally”. • The same conditions apply to those in regional NSW in the same circumstances that apply to residents of Greater Sydney. • Residents of declared area (ie, designated parts of Greater Sydney) can collect a pet if it is within 5 kilometres of the place of residence, or if they are not reasonably available in the 5-kilometre radius - from another place in the declared area, or if they are not reasonably available in the declared area - from the closest place in Greater Sydney to the place of residence that they are available

Queensland News Column

Queensland News Cristina Fornasier Queensland Columnist Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com Phone: 0418 219 071 Been a couple of months without K9Online Queensland column due to that dreaded word ‘Covid’. Shows cancelled left, right and centre or changes to judges panels saw many not being able to or want to show. Although most of us appreciated the fact we still were able to go to shows where so many other states were in complete shut down. Following submitted by Sue Caldwell. (Thank you) A few of our North Queensland dog show family headed to the Northern Territory in July & August to do the NT Circuit and the Darwin Royal. Of course they holidayed and did lots of sightseeing along the way!! The banner was held high by our travelling and homebred NQ Boston Terriers and miniature smooth Dachshunds as shown by the results and ribbons brought back home. At the Darwin Royal, under judge Carol Beckett, Di Condon’s Boston Terrier (Libertybos Rain Rain Go Away) was awarded Best in Group & then went on to be awarded Aust-bred in Show. ‘Dacaldorf Light My Fire’ (miniature smooth Dachshund owned by Sue & John Caldwell) won Reserve in Group. Dacaldorf Lightning McQueen (miniature smooth Dachshund owned by D&K Appleby) won Minor in Group. Some of the other results from the trip included: Libertybos Atlanta won Minor in Group at all the shows. Gr Ch & Neuter Ch Libertybos About Time was awarded Reserve Neuter in show at 3 out of 5 shows At the Canine Expo (Show 1), Dacaldorf King of the

Mountain (S&J Caldwell) was awarded Best in Group with Nooramunga Lucky Oriley (D&K Appleby) coming in & taking out Reserve in Group. Dacaldorf King of the Mountain went on to win Reserve in Show & Intermediate in Show under Victorian judge, Darren Bowey. Dacaldorf Lightning McQueen (owned by D&K Appleby) won Minor in Group at all 3 of the Canine Expo Shows and was awarded Best of Breed and Minor in Show under Victorian Judge: Gordon (Max) Winch at the second show of the day. The next day, the dachies did it again with in Group wins, with Dacaldorf Mercedes on Fire (S&J Caldwell) being awarded Best in Group and Dacaldorf King of the Mountain (Reserve in Group) under WA judge. S. Mallia. Dacaldorf Lightning McQueen won Minor in Group. Dacaldorf Mercedes on Fire went on to be awarded Puppy in Show. Some of the shows on the circuit were cancelled due to COVID but that just gave our happy campers more time to explore Darwin and the NT. The trip wasn’t without its ‘adventures’ with Di catching up to the others at Tennant Creek after her Toyota Coaster, Goldie, decided to get sick on the way to Townsville at the start of the journey. Then Sue & John’s motorhome decided to stop running at Tennant Creek on the way home. Ten days later when it was picked up by the transport company, 7 dachshunds in 2 dog crates, 2 humans, a portable fridge, a dog trolley, 2 outdoor pens, clothes & food were packed into their Getz for the drive back to Mackay - one very loaded up little car !!

Footnote: Many on these guys facebook friends page were able to follow their travels which included many scenery photo’s to make us all jealous and thinking of planning to do this circuit next year.

******* Recently North Queensland lost one of it’s show members. News broke to many Saturday morning 2nd October that Jim McKenzie had passed away. Jim was a very valued member of Ingham Kennel Club, constantly working to improve the grounds and when he sadly had to give up looking after the grounds due to his health it didn’t stop him from attending what shows he could on his mobility scooter to which most had to be careful he didn’t run them over.

All over Australia, there are more than 32,000 of us committed to creating the best lives for dogs. It doesn’t matter if you are a breeder, part of a breed club, rehome and rescue, building incredible bonds through dog sports, or a supportive member. What unites us is our love of dogs.

Jim will be sadly missed by so many that knew him as he was always ready with a smile and a joke (normally rude) plus willing to help anyone that needed help.

The ANKC is changing the way we communicate with dog lovers around Australia. Join ANKC Chairman Hugh Gent OAM along with the Board of Directors for a streamed presentation. Together, they will share a new direction for the ANKC and how working together will transform us.

The show fraternity send their condolences to his family and close friends.

To watch the stream on Sunday, October 24, register at update.ankc.org.au

Rest peacefully Jim as you join your beloved Bev and a few close friends before you.

Are you ready to unite the dogs of Australia? ******* Brisbane Lure Coursing Club The Battle of the States 100m sprints have been run and won. A total of 13 National class titles for BLCC entries, thank you to all entrants, some great performances. ******* There was to be a three weekend circuit in Zone 2 and 3 but unfornately Mackay Kennel Club had to cancel their weekend which left Proserpine 6 championship shows and then Sarina’s 3 championship show weekend. Proserpine was held over the Queens Birthday weekend and what a massive set of shows. Hot weather through the day and cool weather at night still saw approx. 350 dogs turn up to strut their stuff. Exhibitors travelling from Brisbane in droves sometimes it felt like we were at mini Durack. But the small committee of Proserpine Kennel Club took to the challenge with gusto. The canteen provided a vast array of food and delicious deserts for all.

Having the showgrounds all to themselves there was plenty of area’s to camp along with power and lovely hot water in the showers. Just a little more shade would have been nice but then there were some that chose to motel in the various ones throughout the small township of Proserpine or Airlie Beach. It was a shame some chose to hog shade area’s in the assembly area’s by not removing crates while other groups were on but fortunately most exhibitors were considerate of others and helped to ensure dogs remained cool while waiting their turn to be shown in their groups. A great decision by the club was to delay the afternoon show times to start at 4pm instead of the planned hour after first end of morning show. General consensus over the weekend was that most enjoyed their time in Proserpine and marking it down for next year.

Including a few photo’s from the weekend – might be a few behind the scene’s one’s too :)

Many have planned to head off to Sarina for their triple

header this coming weekend. Some taking in the various sites to be seen between Prossie and Sarina while others will do the trip again between their homes to these shows. Again hopefully exhibitors will be considerate to other especially those camping as we all hope at any venues *******

Zone 1 will continue on as long as there are not more shut downs. One can only hope perhaps 2022 will be better and less restrictive with judges being able to be sourced from other states. Cheers for now Cristina Fornasier Email: Cristina_for@hotmail.com

Victorian News Column

Victorian News Mike Higgins Victorian Columnist Email: mikemonarkin@aol.com Hello Here we are with yet another month gone by in lockdown in Victoria and what has been reported as being one of the longest lockdowns in the world.

but we are all hoping for mid to late November. However these are not likely to be a return to the normal show that we knew before Covid. Almost certainly masks will be mandatory for sometime.

A recent article on why we feel that either the days drag by all the time or speed by, and the difficulty that some of us have trying to recall whether something occurred in 2019, 2020, or indeed this year is all due to the way our mind links the passage of time to events. For many of us whose hobby is showing dogs these events include Royal shows, specialty shows as well as notable weekends like Melbourne Cup Day weekend with the Sunbury show. For over 18 months now most of these events have not happened and coupled with the inability to have birthday parties and other family family celebrations there is less by which to measure the passage of time.

What is currently unclear in Victoria is what the situation will be for unvaccinated people once the 80% fully vaccinated target is met.

As the months roll by in lockdown we see more shows approach the scheduled date and having to cancel. Some have rescheduled three times. Most agricultural society shows are also cancelled and those that had hoped to run horse and dog events have mostly succumbed to the difficulty and abandoned the idea. Some Victorians have sent their dogs on an interstate holiday and it is pleasing to see them winning awards in their temporary homes. David McCullough and his Cavaliers, Helen Chen and her Samoyeds, the Moores and their Old English Sheepdogs and Pauline Grutzner and her Schipperkes are some that come to mind. However it does not replace the satisfaction and pleasure of showing your own dog and enjoying the interaction with fellow exhibitors. For many, dog shows are not just an exhibition they are a social opportunity. With an ageing membership in the dog world the weekend shows maybe some people’s only social interaction. During prolonged lockdown the isolation becomes quite wearing and the continued raising of hopes with falling case numbers and relaxation of restrictions and hopes only to be followed by another lockdown as cases rise again has become more than a brief frustration. It is a despair. Who knows when shows will be able to resume in Victoria,

16 | K9online.com.au

The dog world is a cross-section of society encompassing various cultures, all socio-economic groups, and age groups so it is obvious that there will be differing opinions on many subjects including the wearing of masks and vaccinations. Social media discussions have become a battleground of the non-vaccinated and vaccinated. However the ultimate decision as to who may be able to participate in dog world activities is very likely to be solely that of state government and perhaps the federal government, with DogsVictoria and affiliates having to comply. It is all academic at this stage to have any discussion on what dog shows maybe when they resume in Victoria. Meanwhile we look on with envy at those States that continue to have shows but perhaps without giving much thought to the difficulties of running shows even in open States. Whether and which state borders will open to allow interstate judges is another unknown and the difficulty of procuring local judges becomes more so with each show rescheduled. A look at the Dogzonline Rising Star pointscore for this year is an indication of the impact the lack of shows is having on young Victorian dogs. In the top 50 there are only two Victorian dogs, the highest in 11th place. Meanwhile in the National All Breeds pointscore Cinnamon Clarke’s Wire Fox Terrier continues to hold second-place amongst many dogs who have been able to attend many shows in states not so heavily affected by lockdown as Victoria Hopefully next month I will be able to report that shows and events are up and running smoothly and peacefully in Victoria. Stay safe everyone Mike

Tasmanian News

Since taking over the role of Tassie columnist I have had to start my columns too often with tragic news. This month we suddenly lost long time exhibitor Lyn Williamson (nee Liddington). Lyn originally exhibited Tibetian Terriers and more recently Lowchens and Harvanese. A friend to everyone, who worshipped her dogs. She will be sadly missed. Our sincere condolences to Lyn’s husband, Dave. On a more positive note, Katelyn Innes’ mother, Yanina Smith recently posted this update: Today marks 10 weeks since Katelyn experienced a life threatening Subarachnoid haemorrhage which placed her in ICU for 3 weeks in a coma. Her condition has affected her movement and coordination (significantly more on her left side) and she is working hard on her motor development in both gross and fine motor skills. All those little things we take for granted each day, like walking, talking and feeding ourselves are now things Katelyn is working on in her physio sessions to enable her to become more independent. Early June when Katelyn’s communication chart was introduced she told us she couldn’t hear. It came as a total shock and one we never expected. In all that time the conversations we had had together she was actually lip reading us. Over the last couple of weeks her hearing has started to return on her right side, so that is fabulous news for her. Katelyn also has speech therapy and is working on using her vocal cords again which will enable her to get back to her chatty self.

30 | K9online.com.au

Rachael Holloway Tasmanian Columnist Email: rachael@zuleika.com.au Considering the extent of her medical condition Katelyn’s recovery is progressing positively well, though slow for her, we see remarkable progress daily. Bubs, is going amazingly well through all this, oblivious to things going on in the outside world and giving mum bouts of nausea, as the saying goes, ‘she’s growing like a weed’ but rest assured, she’s still looking like she’s going to be a whopper. 6 weeks to go and counting down. The road to today has certainly been a roller-coaster of every emotion possible for us all. The journey will be a long one for Katelyn and we thank you all from the bottom of our hearts for being here for us and sharing this journey with her. Thank you to everyone who entered the virtual show. The final entry total was 2665. Fantastic support from Katelyn’s two breeds: 151 British Bulldogs and 149 Dalmations. To continue raising funds to support Katelyn and her young family during her recovery, a Monster Raffle has been launched. The prizes are so generous and amazing organisers Teen Sloan and Shannah Joseph had to stop donations because they were going to need a significant ‘gambling’ permit. Some items have already been sold via silent auctions. Tickets will be sold through Showmanager, however if you would like to see the prizes on offer, head to the Facebook Page. July kicked off with the rescheduled Agility & Jumping Trials, hosted by Tasmanian Dog Training Club over the first weekend. Congratulations to those who

received Qualifications over the four trials: Novice Jumping: At Trial 1, judge Paul Schroeder (SA) - E. McGinniss’ Alkirakeli Countess Isabella; A. Castle’s Callie. At Trial 3, judge Paul Schroeder - W. Walker’s Dayre Fyre Of The Dragon. At Trial 4, judge Peter Hofto (Tas) - S. Ward’s Sarasota Touch The Stars; A. Castle’s Callie. Excellent Jumping: At Trial 1, judge Paul Schroeder - C. Ward’s Turangawaewi Lokis Spirit. At Trial 2, T. Cassidy’s Alkirakeli Our Little Warrior; J. Tanner’s Dayre The Dragon Heart; R. McDade’s Collee. Masters Jumping: At Trial 1 - A. Kennerson’s Blackvelvet Open Jumping: At Trial 3 - A. Kennerson’s Blackvelvet; P. Hofto’s Maghera Lickety Split. Novice Agility: At Trial 4, judge Kendal Olsen (Tas) - A. Castle’s Callie Thank you to Clover Ward for the fantastic action shots.

Over the weekend of 3-4 July, Ulverstone Kennel Club held the state’s second Scent Work Trial, judged by Ms A. Hervey-Tennyson (Vic) and Mrs P. Brown (Tas).
