Child Abuse Prevention
Because Good Beginnings Last a Lifetime April means the start of spring, a time of new beginnings. Team Kadena recognizes that ‘Good beginnings last a lifetime’ and it’s imperative that as a community we do our part to prevent child abuse or neglect. Nearly 5 children die every day as a result of child abuse or neglect. In order to ensure our children have the best outcomes in life we must recognize that it is our responsibility to take an active role to prevent child abuse/neglect. By knowing the warning signs, how to intervene, and being aware of the available resources, you can help prevent child abuse or neglect. Some signs of child abuse or neglect include: · Unexplained injuries · Behavior changes (may include aggressive behaviors, frightened of parents or caregivers, afraid to go home, withdrawn, overly passive or compliant) · Poor hygiene and inadequate or inappropriate clothing · A toddler outside without adult supervision · Substance abuse (drug or alcohol) · Inappropriate sexual behaviors If you suspect a child is being abused or neglected notifying the appropriate authorities is the first step. If there are immediate safety concerns, contact your local law enforcement agencies or emergency services.
Suspected child abuse should be reported to the Family Advocacy Program at your installation. You may be the only voice for a child who is otherwise voiceless.

Kadena Library Month of the Military Child
Children are a blessing in life but sometimes that life can be stressful; whether it is sleep schedules, potty training, hormonal adolescents or simply having a “strong willed” child we all could use some help. Knowing where to turn for resources, in addition to our family and friends, is key to those “good beginnings.” Team Kadena has many resources available to families and caregivers that provide education, tips and training on parenting as well as caring for children using positive, healthy parenting and discipline techniques. “Kids are like sponges.” That’s the saying, right? I imagine that being a little sponge growing up in the military world is quite the experience. Being introduced into such a hectic lifestyle so early on is surely something that you grow accustomed to, but also something that takes work to understand. Our families are our motivators and the reason why many put a uniform on in the morning. The month of April is a time to thank and remember your family and more specifically the kiddos in your life, for going through this unique experience with you. I didn’t grow up as a military child so my perspective is different, but now being a part of this community, I see the sacrifices and challenges that many families undergo. Kids, it’s your time! Wear purple throughout the month to show your support for military children around the world. Students from the Audio/Video Club at the Kadena Middle School had the opportunity to get some hands-on learning from the Kadena Marketing staff and produced their very own video! Check it out on the Kadena FSS Facebook page!

NAHA DRAGON BOAT RACE
The Dragon Boat Races are a tradition embedded into the heart of Okinawan culture. They date back to the 14th century and continue to be celebrated every year. The races are held at the conclusion of Golden Week, usually 29 April - 5 May, each year. Golden Week consists of a series of Japanese holidays including the Emperor’s birthday, Constitution Day and Children’s Day. It’s a week’s worth of celebrations all around the island. Once you start seeing the carp fish flags hanging around the island, which serve as a symbol of Golden Week, you’ll know the Naha Dragon Boat Race is right around the corner! The Dragon Boat Races are said to bring happiness, wealth and fertility from the sea to the Okinawan people. The races have evolved over time - they’ve become a yearly spectacle for everyone to enjoy, including the military community. Every year, locals, military members and family members form teams to train and compete. Teams consist of 8 to 32 rowers, representing different businesses and organizations on Okinawa, all vying for the first place finish. The best part? No experience is required! Anyone wanting to challenge themselves, learn something new, and meet new people can participate. It is not without some physical effort of course, but it is a cool opportunity to take part in a cultural tradition on Okinawa. You’ll not only gain more physical prowess, but you’ll form a camaraderie with new teammates and friends. The Naha Dragon Boat Race is the largest of the races, with 20 - 30 teams competing. There is plenty to enjoy even if you’re not participating, because watching can be just as fun! Cheer on your favorite team to the finish line. After the race, find some delicious foods and entertainment at the festivals that take place throughout the day. Since traffic can be very hectic during this time, take the opportunity to sit back and relax, and let Kadena ITT do the work for you. If you miss out on the big one, don’t worry! There are many Dragon Boat Races held throughout the month of May at varying locations. Give Kadena ITT a call to reserve your spot!

Kadena Air Base has not one, but two beautiful golf courses ready for everyone to enjoy. The greens are smooth and perfectly cut for the golf ball to glide along toward the tee. I always drive by the golf course and think about just how much work it takes to upkeep the greens to keep them primped and primed for all golfers. Well, this month I headed over to the Banyan Tree Golf Course and spoke to the maintenance staff to learn more about what they do. Shinichi, Tamashiro, the Maintenance Foreman is from here originally and has been working for the Banyan Tree Golf Course for almost 30 years. He has a staff of about 16 people who work to maintain beautiful 18 hole greens on Kadena. Tamashiro-san’s favorite part about his job is finding the best methods for growing grass, which includes finding the best seeds, learning the best times to water it and working with the elements to ensure it grows at a good rate. He has met many Greenkeepers over the years and has enjoyed making connections with people from all over FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
the world. Hironaga Maekawa has been the Tractor Operator at the Chibana Golf Course for 26 years. He has also enjoyed meeting people from many places, but his favorite memory is from when he helped build the green at Chibana Golf Course in 1989. Between Tamashiro-san and Maekawa-san and their amazing team, they work day and night to ensure they provide the best for their customers. They take pride in their hard work and love seeing the green look beautiful. Their job comes with some unavoidable obstacles, particularly with the weather during typhoon season. They understand that people have been cooped up in their houses and would like to go out and play as soon as possible, so the maintenance team works quickly to recover the courses as well as they can so their customers can get out and play. When I heard he had joined the team, I knew immediately I had to get the word out that Emery Lanes has a silver level coach, a former team USA member, number one ranked amateur in the USA in 2004, and 4-time PBA champion on staff. His experience guarantees the upcoming bowling clinics will be filled with all the important techniques, strategies, and knowledge you could want to improve your bowling game. As someone who suffers from an extreme competitive streak as well as a truly terrible bowling ability, I personally can’t wait to attend this clinic. During my interview with him, I managed to convince him to share some of his knowledge with me. I learned a lot about one of the most important tools of the sport - the bowling ball. I have always struggled with picking a good bowling ball. I never knew what weight was the right one or if it even mattered. Spoiler alert: it definitely matters! There are about 40 pounds worth of pins at the end of the lane, so it is important to grab the heaviest ball that you can still control. I also learned that there is a big difference between the plastic and highperformance balls. The slippery stuff on the lane, also known as lane conditioner, is pushed around by the hard plastic of a regular bowling ball, because the surface isn’t very porous. The high-performance balls act like a sponge and soak up some of the oil which means that you can bowl more consistently. I will be taking the tips and tricks I learned during my interview to my next bowling outing and perhaps I will be able to finally satisfy my competitive streak! I know I will be at the Intro to Bowling 101 class, the real question is will I see you there?

Together Written By • Melissa Kowaluk
Do you ever think about the footprint we have on our Earth? Every day we should consider the effect our choices have on the environment, now more than ever. Keeping this in mind will not only help ourselves but the longevity of this beautiful island for generations to come. The 18 FSS facilities are taking actions to better our world for our benefits and for the natural world with all of its wonder.
32 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
ave you ever stayed at the Turtle’s Nest cabins at Okuma Beach? They’re peaceful, spacious cabins and are actually named after the nests they have found on their beaches. Turtles have been migrating through Okinawan waters far longer than any of us know, and the folks over at Okuma Beach are doing their part to help conserve their habitat. The staff members protect the unhatched eggs in turtle nests by putting up fencing so no predators can get to them before they can safely get back into the water. The fencing is large enough for the little guys to get through once it’s time. It has become a tradition for the staff to watch and help the baby turtles crawl into the waters every season. This is nothing that they have been asked to do, it is simply part of their desire to conserve something so beautiful and natural to their part of the island. Bellows Air Station, located in Oahu, Hawaii, has been working on several environmental restoration projects throughout the years. Bellows is known for their soft sandy beaches but, due to strong trade winds, large amounts of their beaches were eroding. They introduced a new plant called a Pahoihoi that captures the sand as the trade winds blow, allowing the sand to remain in place. They have also restored massive amounts of wetlands in the region, which is a vital ecosystem necessary for wildlife to exist. Check out more about this awesome project on the Kadena FSS TV channel on Youtube or see it for yourself when you book a stay! Oftentimes, the beaches around Okinawa fill up with garbage and pollute the beauty that lies beneath. To help combat this, the Kadena Marina holds beach cleanups where friends and families come together on a weekend morning with some bags and start cleaning up the beaches. It’s not hard! Just think of how good it feels to get the day started right with some coffee, friends and good deeds for your community. It’s amazing to see how much difference just one person can make. Now, imagine what a small group could do. Five people can cleanup an entire beach in one morning - that’s huge! Although the staff at the Kadena Marina does their part to organize these cleanups, it’s certainly something that anyone can do at any time. Next time you head to the beach, think about taking a small clear bag with you and picking up any trash you see while you’re there.

Not only does the Kadena Marina help clean up the beaches, but on occasion they will also hold discounted dive trips that are geared toward cleaning up the ocean floors. If you’re a diver, this is a cool opportunity because you’re having fun diving, plus you’re helping to keep the waters clean for other divers and of course, the ecosystem. Sometimes all you need to do to appreciate nature is take a hike. Admire the beauty that surrounds you as you walk through forested hills and observe cascading waterfalls. The folks over at Outdoor Recreation know all about this and truly care about taking care of the paths they guide hikers through. I’ve gone on several hikes with ODR, and every time I see the guides picking up small pieces of garbage as they go. This month they’re holding a hike on Earth Day, 22 April, to do just that. They’re even sweetening the deal by introducing some friendly competition, see pages 22-23 for more details. The Kadena Library is doing their part to encourage recycling by hosting an event called the Trashion Show. Similar to what you may have seen on TV, the idea is to recycle materials from everyday use to create an outfit for a doll, which will then be judged to determine the winner. This is a great way to teach kids the importance of recycling! Check out page 5 for more details. It really doesn’t take much. Gaining mindfulness and an appreciation for your surroundings and your place in the world doesn’t just help your immediate community, it benefits every single person and creature you encounter. “Be the change you wish you see in the world,” sure it’s a cliché, but I dare you to try, the happiness it brings is contagious!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... UNIT DEPLOYMENT MANAGER
Our community is familiar with having active duty members go to different locations, but we never really think about how those trainings were coordinated at the grassroots level. It is important for those going on TDY to be mission ready, but before the service members even get on the plane, strategic planning must take place to ensure that the training goes as planned. LRS has members deploy to many locations, and they are involved in every exercise that takes place on Kadena. “It is amazing how much one organization can impact the operations of an entire base, and the entire Air Force, honestly,” said SSgt Grigg. Before SSgt Grigg was a UDM, she worked in the Vehicle Operations section. As a Vehicle Operator, she only executed a small part of an ongoing large mission; whereas now, she gets to see it from beginning to end, which she explained has been a very rewarding part of her position as a UDM. The Logistics Readiness Squadron impacts every unit on base whether the jets need fuel, vehicles require maintenance, passengers or cargo need delivering, or missions need to be planned. LRS also impacts our non-active duty population by playing organizational roles in events such as the Kadena Special Olympics and providing updated information regarding readiness. The UDMs are responsible for maintaining and reporting

here are certain squadrons that serve very specific missions, and then there are others that have a much wider reach. The Logistics Readiness Squadron (LRS) is one that acts as a necessary component for mission success, regardless of the short-term goals of a specific mission. serves as the main hub of communications. SSgt Heather Grigg, a Unit Deployment Manager (UDM) with the LRS is from Fairfax, Virginia, and has been on island for about four years. She takes pride in being the reliable source for all questions and is always ready to help in the next mission. “From the biggest mission to the smallest mission, LRS is a part of that.”
SSgt Grigg explained that she is grateful for the open communication between other offices. She wanted to thank her leadership for their support, along with SSgt Angela McCrary from the Installation Personnel Readiness Office and SSgt Yesenia Benjamin from Public Health who have collaborated with SSgt Grigg in times when it counted most. Networking within different work centers and contributing to each other’s success is ultimately what will help all missions be more successful. SSgt Grigg’s favorite part about living here is the community both American and Japanese. She hopes to help continue building up the community around her by exemplifying what she believes is to be a good neighbor. FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
