Tuesday, 24 December  10:30 am - 1 pm

Please come join us for this year’s holiday meal. We will be serving a wide variety of favorites, so don’t forget to bring your appetite!

What a year it has been! 2024 has brought us so many lessons and growth as we navigated life together while thousands of miles away from home. This month is a good time to take a moment to re ect on the adventures, milestones, and unforgettable memories that made this year truly special – some lled with joy and excitement, others marked by challenges and perseverance. Here’s to the highs, the lows, and everything in between that made us all grow to be better.

As we look back, we want to extend our heartfelt THANK YOU for allowing your Kadena FSS family to walk this path with you even through tough moments when you needed support, or on the days when all you needed was to unwind and enjoy each other’s company. We are honored to be part of your 2024 journey.

This year has been packed with incredible events that brought the community closer and allowed us to create memories that will last a lifetime. Please enjoy some of the highlights from this amazing year!

GUITARS N’ CARS

Car enthusiast or not, Guitars n’ Cars drew a curious and excited crowd. With Japan’s love for classic cars, this event was even more special. Participants proudly displayed their classic cars for a friendly competition and celebrated the car community at the rstever huge car show event. But cars weren’t the only highlight – the event

OKUMA BEACH FEST

OCEAN EXPO

PURPLE UP BASH

Despite the gloomy weather, families came out to celebrate our military kids and enjoy the Easter festivities. Purple Up Bash was lled with positive energy to honor the resilience and strength of military children in association with the fun of Easter. Purple Up featured egg hunts, photos with the Easter Bunny, crafts, Kiddie Land rides, and a lot more. Rain or shine, the event spirit was unstoppable.

Okuma Beach Fest is one of the largest open gate events held at Okuma Beach – and it never fails to prove to be the best. With stunning ocean views, live music, delicious food, activities, and laughter, this festival brought the community together – both from in and out of the military community – for an epic experience. From local and international live performances to familyfriendly fun, Okuma Beach Fest stands out

AMERICA FEST

Due to its success in 2023, America Fest returned this year to welcome the local community for yet another open gate event showcasing air power and to express our appreciation for their continued support. This one-day celebration o ered plenty of live entertainment, a wide variety of delicious food, Kiddie Land rides, static displays, activities showcasing Kadena’s mission, and exclusive merchandise to commemorate one of the biggest events of the year.

Anchors aweigh for Kadena Marina for shedding a light on ocean safety and much more during their Ocean Expo 2024. This annual event showcased nearly all aspects of ocean life, water sports, and activities. People gained valuable insights about water gear, the endless resources, and essential safety precautions to follow before, during, and after any water activities. With static displays, water competitions, free food, rentals, and giveaways – the event was surely a success!

FREEDOM FESTIVAL & FIREWORKS

KADENA FRIGHT NIGHT

WINE FEST

Kadena FSS hosts several major events annually, but the two-day Wine Fest has always been a standout favorite. Showcasing elegance and “pourfection,” Wine Fest o ered an unmatched experience blending a diverse selection of wines with gourmet dishes crafted by the Rocker Enlisted Club’s culinary team. People dressed to impress and immersed themselves in an atmosphere of sophisticated décor and, a majestic ambiance lled with the aromas of ne wine, enriching conversations, and fun live performances.

Now that’s how you ignite the spirit of freedom! This year’s Freedom Festival & Fireworks took Fourth of July fun to a whole new level. Red, white, and blue lled every corner as we celebrated America’s Independence Day even far away from home. The event was a blast, with mouthwatering treats, live entertainment, Kiddie Land, marketplace, massive prizes, and, of course, reworks! Talk about a booming, epic, and unforgettable event!

OKTOBERFEST

Prost! Oktoberfest 2023 was such a hit that we’ve expanded this year’s celebration into a two-day festival, and it was the best decision! Everybody donned their dirndls and Ledershosens as they celebrated with their friends and families. The endless entertainment made everyone dance all night long, the contests were a fun treat, and the festive atmosphere brought people together in a joyful celebration of life and unity – even in the rain. Nothing can stop us from celebrating!

Fright Night was a huge success! Everybody showed up dressed as their favorite characters, bringing plenty of style and creativity. The marketplace, trunk or treat, Kiddie Land rides, endless treats, and pumpkin patch were all buzzing with joy and excitement. The costume contests had erce competition, making it tough for the judges to pick the winners, while the live entertainment was a hit for all ages. This event de nitely set the bar high for future Fright Nights!

There were way more events, but if we were to cover them all, we’d ll the entire magazine. Some of these include Puppypalooza, Health & Fitness Fair, Unit v. Unit Karaoke Competition, and so much more! A huge heartfelt thanks goes to the leadership and sta who made these events possible, and to YOU for supporting all FSS happenings – big or small. Here’s to even more in the years to come!

We promise to continue giving you our best to ensure we provide the best experiences, services, and opportunities.

Looking ahead, we’re excited to walk into the new year with a heart lled with gratitude and excitement for what’s to come. We strive for more laughter, more memories, and a future that’s brighter because we’re in it together!

Okinawa’s Scenic Cycling

Okinawa is often celebrated for its pristine beaches and rich cultural heritage, but it has also become a hidden gem for cyclists – for both beginners and pros alike.

The island doesn’t just o er regular trails, but a cycling experience that’s both scenic and immersive, from coastal roads and historical landmarks to the lush countryside.

Over the years, cycling has become increasingly popular on the island, thanks to its mild and comfortable weather along with a unique blend of tranquil and challenging routes and trails. This made it a mustvisit destination for riders and cyclists from around the world.

Its rise in popularity has become part of the Okinawan culture, leading to events and marathons like “Tour de Okinawa,” which also puts the island on the map as one of the top destinations for cyclists. With this, cycling has emerged as one of the island’s main sports, next to basketball and baseball.

Okinawa has made signi cant e orts to improve and develop cycling routes across various parts of the island. These initiatives aim not only to encourage the health and well-being of Okinawans, but also to improve the environment for both locals and tourists alike. Fostering a cycling-friendly framework promotes an active lifestyle and creates a more accessible way to explore the island’s endlessly breathtaking landscapes.

You might be wondering why we chose to feature cycling this month. November marks the o cial start of cycling season in Okinawa, though people enjoy riding year-round. The island’s mild and pleasant weather makes it ideal for outdoor activities at any time.

If you’re looking to experience the charm of Okinawa on two wheels, there are routes around the island that could be the perfect starting point to your adventure! Thanks to Naoki Uchida, Outdoor Recreation’s local tour guide of 15 years, here are some recommended spots for you to explore.

For beginners like me, Naoki-san suggests taking on Nago City. The city features several trails with routes designed for walking, running, road biking, and driving, making it a safe and comfortable environment for cyclists. With its maintained paths and scenic views, Nago City makes for an ideal spot for those looking to ride.

For a more challenging and adventurous ride, start your journey in Nago City and pedal your way to the ever-popular Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium. This route takes you along the scenic coastline o ering stunning views of the East China Sea. Enjoy the refreshing ocean breeze, lush greenery, and breathtaking landscapes.

Lastly, if you’re seeking a more technical challenge, the further northern part of the island o ers the perfect paths and trails with hills. The quieter and less congested roads compared to the southern areas o er safer and more focused rides. These routes are ideal for cyclists looking to maintain a steady speed while enjoying the thrill of diverse elevations.

No matter which path you choose to explore, every route in Okinawa is guaranteed to be a journey as rewarding and worthwhile as the destination. What we can guarantee, though, is the ability to catch unique glimpses of the island’s beauty from breathtaking ocean views, lush greenery, and the beautiful countryside. Every ride in Okinawa is an opportunity to discover something new that makes your ride even more memorable.

NOT SURE WHERE TO START?

Cruise your way over to Kadena Outdoor Recreation for cycling trips around the island and be prepared for a once in a lifetime ride!

Each member of the team embodies hard work, perseverance, dedication, and passion for gymnastics. They devote countless hours of practice and demonstrates incredible dedication, spending long hours in perfecting their skills and routines. Their passion and commitment to the craft is unmatched.

# VENTUREinOki

Hello, cooler months! Get ready for a December to remember. Cold weather doesn’t mean staying indoors in Okinawa – here, it’s the perfect time to get out, embrace the chill, and discover new adventures. From festivals to scenic trails, the cool Okinawa air brings a refreshing twist to your outdoor experiences. So, grab your friends and family and make the most of this season.

Not sure what to do? Search no more because our three submissions this month will show you just what you can do to have the best December. Each showcases the different ways you can spend time with family and friends, whether it’s going on an extreme venture or just relaxing by the beach.

Let’s start off with @_simplynikkie’s underwater photo. This stunning splitview image, where the sunlit sky meets the ocean’s depths offers a truly unique perspective for the viewer and shows the true beauty of Okinawa. Nicole and her friend glide gracefully, hand in hand, as they explore the tranquil underwater world. This photo perfectly captures a moment of connection, peace, and the beauty of exploring the underwater world.

Ōdo Beach, Itoman

Speaking of one-of-a-kind adventures, @_daphneyj kicked off her birthday racing in style through the streets of downtown Naha. Street karting is a staple in Japan offering a unique and exhilarating way to explore the sights of Okinawa while zipping around in a go-kart. To add more to the fun, participants are encouraged to wear costumes to fully immerse themselves in a lively and memorable celebration. Definitely a must while you’re on island!

Street Kart Okinawa, Naha

You can never go wrong with a sunset photo like @lowkey_in_oki’s. Okinawa has one of the best and prettiest sunsets I have ever witnessed. Her daughter sits on a log with her silhouette perfectly framed against the breathtaking backdrop, making it more magical. This image radiates a gleaming, warmth and a dreamlike scene, as the sun appears to rest gently in her palm, creating the illusion that she’s holding it there. What a sight to see!

Tennhama Beach, Yomitan

Now that you have these three locations to visit, be sure to take your own snapshot of your ventures and use the hashtag #VentureinOki for a chance to be featured here! We’d love to see the hidden gems you discover around the island, especially during the holidays.

Happy holidays, and see you next year!
