Thank YOU: Cheers to Our Military Families!
You move into a new house in an unfamiliar place, decorating every corner and trying to make it feel like home, even though you’re unsure how long you’ll be there. With family and friends far away, you’re settling into a place that feels foreign.
Sounds familiar? There’s no denying that being a military family comes with unique challenges that few truly understand. But I believe that no matter where the military life leads you, having your family by your side, your perspective, and what you make of the situation are what truly matter.
We experience constant changes not common to many, most of which are unpredictable. However, one of the most di cult aspects is coping with long stretches of time when your spouse is away. Their absence can create a void in daily routines, which forces you to adapt and carry on to deal with responsibilities solo.
Military families, no doubt, are the most resilient and have a bond that help them navigate the unique pressures of this type of lifestyle. We tend to learn to rely on our support networks and each other to get through the tough times.
In honor of Military Family Appreciation Month, your Kadena FSS family want to show you our appreciation for all you do with the following specials and events. Each of these FSS facilities have worked hard to provide you the best to celebrate YOU.

Blooming into Art: JAPANESE FLOWER ARRANGEMENT
Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen
Flower arrangement is a delicate art form that requires a keen eye and special skills to create elegant, exquisite, and dainty designs that make people feel truly special.
In Japan, this love for nature has deep roots, as re ected in the early Japanese writings that celebrated owers, plants, and trees. The art of ower arrangement, “Ikebana” or “Kado” (the way of owers) was founded by Senno Ikenobo and rst appeared between the 14th and 16th centuries during the Muromachi Period.
Ikenobo was the rst to introduce the theory and techniques of kado, which later gained the interest of the general populace. Over time, kado became an integral part of Japanese tea ceremonies, with ower arrangements beautifying the alcoves of many traditional Japanese rooms.
This unique type of ower arrangement continues to ourish today with di erent schools o ering unique interpretations. Some focus on emphasizing and highlighting natural ower arrangements that re ect the beauty found in the wild, while others encourage and promote di erent, expressive, and bold designs that incorporate the artist’s personal creativity and vision.
As you may know, Japan places great importance on its seasonal blooms. For some, the practice of o ering owers represents “Yorishiro,” or objects believed to attract spirits for worship during ceremonies. Others associate the tradition with o erings made at Buddhist altars, where owers are carefully chosen to align with the season.
Ikebana or Japanese ower arrangement is a highly detail-oriented skill that focuses on every small element, from positioning of each item to the arrangement of stems. While fresh owers add their own unique charm, modern techniques also embrace the use of other materials.
Today, orists are encouraged to experiment with materials like glass iron or alternative owerpots, all of which in uence the overall look of the nal piece.
The art of ower arranging has brought comfort and color to our lives. Now, you have the chance to experience the rich history and symbolism of ikebana with Kadena Schilling Community Center.
Immerse yourself in the fragrant blooms and bring your creativity and vision to life as you explore the beauty of this traditional Japanese art.

# VENTUREinOki
Konnichiwa! Say hello to the new and improved #VentureinOki, formerly known as #FindSomethingSpecial, where we feature YOUR photos of your exciting adventures and discoveries around the island. Whether it’s Okinawa’s hidden treasures or popular destination, #VentureinOki is your place to share both the hidden gems and wellknown spots of Okinawa to inspire others to explore the beauty of this incredible paradise.
To start off our new tradition, @_genesisllanos_ takes to the skies, showing off the lush greenery of Okinawa in the most exhilarating way – ziplining. Imagine soaring through the treetops with the wind rushing past you as you take in the views of untouched landscapes. Ziplining in Okinawa is one of the many ways you can feel one with nature and truly appreciate the island’s natural beauty from a different perspective.

A lot of history lies within the landscapes of Fukushuen Garden, which is where @anastasiyanee chose to spend her day exploring. The architectural detail of the pictured gate awakens a sense of elegance and cultural adoration. Behind her, the greenery and distant pagoda provide a perfect backdrop for snapshots like this one – capturing tradition and modernity in one frame.
Fukushuen Garden, Naha
Talk about a hidden gem! Okinawa is home to a number of breathtaking waterfalls, big and small. @xoxo.hyeyoung came across one and made sure to capture the mesmerizing natural beauty of a stream of water falling from a rocky ledge, surrounded by nothing but lush greenery. What a scene to witness!
Thank you to our featured profiles for showcasing the diverse beauty of Okinawa. We look forward to seeing more waterfalls, beaches, lush greenery, stunning architectures, and exciting adventures you embark on during your time here. Don’t forget to use our new hashtag #VentureinOki for a chance to be featured. Let’s share all the cool places for everyone to explore!
‘Til next time, readers!
