CULTURAL CORNER
Article by Janelle Rivera and Julia Cruz | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen
In Okinawa, the New Year is more than just a date on the calendar; it is a heartwarming celebration steeped in rich traditions and joyous festivities. Okinawa invites you to enjoy a unique New Year’s celebration that combines old and new traditions, from the captivating sounds of traditional music to the smell of local delicacies lling the air.
In many places around the world, New Year’s Eve celebrations typically consist of reworks lighting up the skies. While most celebrations take place on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, some begin much earlier. Every country, every culture, and every home creates their own traditions. So, here’s a look at the customs, rituals, and practices that make New Year’s in Okinawa truly unique and special.
While most places celebrate with vibrant rework displays, in Okinawa, this holiday centers more on traditions deeply rooted in family, spirituality, and cultural heritage. Although the main festivities typically occur the night before and the day of, many Okinawan traditions begin days or even weeks leading up to the New Year.
As the holiday approaches, homes are beauti ed with decorations like “kadomatsu” (traditional ornament displays made of pine branches and bamboo), “shimekazari” (rice straw ropes hung on doors), oranges, and plum blossoms – all of which symbolize good fortune, luck, and new beginnings.
Similar to spring cleaning, Okinawans perform “ousouji”, or “big cleaning” for the purpose of purifying their homes and workspaces for a fresh start to the new year. Another cherished tradition is sending “nengajyo” or greeting cards wishing friends and family good health and prosperity – it’s a thoughtful way to show they matter.
On New Year’s Eve, it’s customary for locals to visit local shrines or temples to give thanks and pray for the upcoming year. Some also make their way to Shuri Castle to experience their New Year’s Celebration complete with a traditional royal ceremony, dancing, and colorful lights.
New Year’s Day, on the other hand, begins with “hatsuhinode”, the special tradition of watching the rst sunrise of the year. Many oftentimes drive to the beaches or mountaintops for a breathtaking view of the sun rising over the Paci c Ocean. You share this special moment with family and friends as you soak in the most magical moment and view to begin the rst day of the year.
Later in the day, people ock to the malls for huge New Year deals. One standout tradition that draws the crowds, though, is “fukubukuro” or “lucky bags” lled with surprise goods inside. These bags can be found in grocery stores, malls, bakeries, and lots more.
Regardless of where you are on island or however you choose to celebrate, we hope you enjoy the magic of welcoming the new year in this beautiful paradise. Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! あけましておめでとう!
What a year it has been. There’s no better way to embrace a fresh start than by exploring the beauty of Okinawa and its countless opportunities for adventure, discovery, and capturing unforgettable memories. Join us as we set the tone to yet another great year full of ventures.
Let’s step outside, embrace nature, and explore the unique treasures of Okinawa. From the magical views of their beaches to traditional and historic monuments, every corner holds a story waiting to be discovered and, of course, photographed.
@churavibes made it a point to take a selfie with such a majestic view of the sun slowly setting gracefully across the horizon. The vibrant colors of the sunset painted the sky in a mesmerizing combination of gold and orange reflecting on the crystal-clear blue waters. Let this be a reminder of the natural beauty the island offers – allowing us to reflect and appreciate the wonders of nature.

@not.all.who.wander.are.lost1 posed gracefully for a photo beneath the Japanese lanterns that feature prayers and wishes inked in bold black for a prosperous new year ahead. She committed to embracing the Japanese culture by taking part in visiting a shrine to welcome the new year and pray for prosperity and good health, among other things.
Awase Bijuru Shrine, Awase
Lastly, @ecoflightattendant and her husband were all smiles as they captured a breathtaking selfie moment with a perfect blue sky, crystal-clear ocean, and a double rainbow arcing across the sky. Okinawa is known for its endless beaches, and if you’re lucky enough, you might find yourself on a cliff and a double rainbow appears across the horizon, adding to the alreadyperfect view before you.
Miyakojima, Okinawa
Feeling inspired? Hurry and head to these locations and capture your own version of a perfect photograph embodying the Okinawa charm. When you do, don’t forget to use the hashtag #VentureinOki for a chance to also be featured on our Venture Magazine.
Cheers to 2025! Here’s to more adventures with you all!
