Discover the Battle of Okinawa
Have you ever wondered why the U.S. military moved to Okinawa?
The Ryukyu Islands were a key part in any strategic plan that involved the invasion of Japan during World War II.
It was in April of 1945 during the last major battle, the Battle of Okinawa, when more than 180,000 U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps troops along with the Fifth Fleet from the U.S. Navy embarked on a journey to the Paci c Island of Okinawa.
The Battle of Okinawa was a component of Operation Iceberg – a plan to overrun the Ryukyu Islands. Reasonably so, it was a crucial turning point that shaped the future military strategy in the Paci c.
Okinawa’s proximity to mainland Japan made it ideal for the Japanese High Command’s nal defense to protect their homeland from invaders. Alternatively, the U.S. knew the strategic importance of Okinawa and how critical it was to invading Japan; hence, why troops began their journey to the island.
The U.S. troops secured air bases on the island to ensure a successful invasion. Unexpected defensive attacks shocked the American forces at almost every location. Although the battles at each site were gruesome, the Americans ultimately prevailed and took control.
This continued for three months, during which U.S. military forces captured one area after another. American troops began invading locations like Kadena and Yontan air elds then advanced inland toward the southern region of Okinawa, including Shuri and other areas.
As a result, Okinawa today is rich in history with locations connected to the Battle of Okinawa still existing. Places like the Okinawa Peace Memorial Park, created where the battle ended, now serve as places for people to mourn and honor the lives lost in defense of their island.
Hacksaw Ridge is another signi cant site from the battle. This location saw brutal combat with American troops ultimately emerging victorious. Among the many acts of bravery during the three-month battle, one heroic soldier, Corporal Desmond T. Doss, courageously saved 75 wounded soldiers, earning him the prestigious Medal of Honor. His actions exempli ed the incredible bravery and sacri ce displayed during such an intense battle.
Another symbolic site is the Japanese Naval Underground Headquarters. This tunnel complex reaches 20 meters deep and provided a fortress for 4,000 soldiers from the vicious bombardments and drawn-out ghting during the battle. The headquarters served as a protective refuge during the bloody combat.
These locations are only a few of the key sites that played an important part during the Battle of Okinawa. Each place shows us a glimpse into the grueling environment of the war and the extraordinary bravery of those involved.
Those three months were no easy feat and is considered one of Americans’ greatest victories in the Paci c campaign, but it came with an enormous price. The Fifth Fleet su ered severe losses with approximately 12,000 deceased, 36,000 wounded, 368 damaged ships, and more. This shows the sacri ce and struggles those who fought in the Battle of Okinawa faced.
Dig up more details about the war with Kadena Information, Tickets & Travel’s three-part tour that retraces the footsteps of the bloodiest, last major battle of World War II. Discover the past by visiting key sites that played pivotal roles during the war and be reminded of the historical signi cance and impact this battle has to this day.

OKTOBERFEST 2024: O’zapft is!
Prost! As the night gets cooler, there’s one upcoming festival that promises cheer, warmth, smiles, and endless fun – Oktoberfest!
Kadena Force Support Squadron is bringing you the best Wiesn in town, Okinawan style. Whether you’re a seasoned festival-goer or an eager newcomer, let’s dive into the traditions and learn how this popular festival came to be. So, grab your dirndl or lederhosen and prepare for a frothy good time!
First and foremost, Oktoberfest is renowned as the largest beer festival originally held in Munich, Germany.
The annual festival dates back to 1810 when the citizens of Munich gathered together to celebrate the royal wedding of Crown Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese. The celebration became an annual event and was later adapted by other countries. From its humble beginnings to the grand extravaganza it is now, Oktoberfest has become a symbol of the Bavarian culture and heritage.
Experience the spirit of joy, unity, and camaraderie through good company, traditional music, delicious food, and drinks. Here’s an ultimate guide to Kadena’s Oktoberfest 2024.
Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen | Photos by Marina Chayka
KIDS WELCOME (5 - 8 PM)
Good news for parents! You can take your whole family to Oktoberfest. It is a wonderful family event where every member of the family can join in the fun. Alongside the traditional festivities, there will be several activities for children to enjoy. From Kiddieland rides, youth zone, obstacle courses, dunk tank, and carnival games, children will have as much of a great time as adults.
HAVE A PLAN
Above all, it’s crucial for everyone in your group to have a post-event plan. This includes making sure everyone is accounted for before, during, and after the event, and have transportation to get home. It’s also important to ensure the safe return of all members of your group. There will be on-base shuttles available for those needing transportation.
WEAR YOUR DIRNDL AND LEDERHOSEN
Celebrate Oktoberfest in style and embrace the tradition by wearing full traditional attire! Feel the true essence of Oktoberfest by immersing yourself in the most authentic way possible, starting with your wardrobe. A Dirndl is a traditional dress worn by women with an undershirt and apron. Tying the bow to the left means you are single, while tying it on the right means you are taken. Lederhosen, on the other hand, are traditional leather trousers or shorts worn by men.
ARRIVE EARLY
