Explore the World of Eisa
It's a Saturday night, and as you wander beneath the starlit sky through the vibrant American Village, the enchanting sound of synchronized drums draws you in. Guided by the captivating rhythms, you see Eisa performers mesmerize a crowd of bystanders. From their ornate attires, the thunderous drums, and their distinct and spirited dances and chants, it is sure to transform the night into a symphony of festive celebration.
rticle by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen
Bachi – a light, wooden drumstick meant for Eisa Daiko.
Obi – a traditional belt used for Japanese costumes that represent a strong bond.
Kehan – or “gaiters” are leg coverings used to protect one shins. They are worn by workers and performers.
Saaji – an Eisa turban, typically worn by men, featuring long tails that gracefully flow during their performances.
*Women usually wear a Hachimaki, a traditional Japanese headband. (Featured on opposite page)
Odaiko –a big Eisa taiko drum that produces a deeper sound. It suspended from the shoulder with a sash.
*Other drums are Shime Daiko, a handheld drum that produces a somewhat medium pitch sound, and Paranku, a small handheld drum that produces a high pitch sound. (Featured on opposite page)
Tabi –or “ninja shoes” are customarily worn during festivals and performances.
Juban (not pictured) – an undergarment commonly worn under a long vest called Uchikake.
You know it’s summer when Eisa, Okinawa’s folk dance, brings the streets of the island to life. This type of dance dates back to 500 years ago and experts have di erent theories about its origins. One of which is its a liation with a Buddhist folk dance meant to soothe the spirits of the departed.
While Eisa unites and uplifts people’s spirits, it also plays a crucial role to a signi cant holiday, Obon. This tradition is a summer custom of honoring departed ancestors, similar to All Soul’s Day, who are thought to return home for a three-day holiday.
Though most people celebrate privately, several public festivities feature Eisa performers traveling to various locations within the community. This month, listen as the beat of the drums and Eisa chants ll the air as families celebrate and send o their departed loved ones while guarding against bad spirits on the nal day of Obon.
Additionally, Okinawa Zento Eisa Matsuri, the largest Eisa festival, and the 10,000 Eisa Dancers Parade, are held annually for everyone to experience the rich diversity of this dance form. Performers usually consist of a wide range of ages and countless youth groups.
Eisa has been passed down through generations and has since changed. Witness as some group of performers carry taiko drums or Paranku, a small Okinawan drum, incorporate Karate into their routines, while others use graceful movements among many other things.
Performers oftentimes wear colorful costumes unique to their community.
Women traditionally wear a Yukata, a robe originally worn for baths but has evolved to become an everyday summer wear. It is now commonly worn during summer festivals like Eisa Matsuri.
Men wear various traditional costumes depending on their respective community. *Refer to the photo on the next page.
Want to join in the festivities? Head to Information, Tickets & Travel and grab your tickets to the 10,000 Eisa Dancers Parade or pay Okuma Beach a visit for their Hai Sai “Hello” Summer event to witness Eisa performers ll the resort with music and chants.

Youth Sports: Shaping Next Generation MVPs
Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen | Photography by Marina Chayka
Imagine a sunny Saturday morning lled with children’s laughter as they chase a soccer ball across the eld. You, along with other parents, cheer from the sidelines, proud to witness your kids having fun. This is just a glimpse of the lively world of Kadena Youth Sports.
There’s no better way to learn and grow than by having fun, and that’s exactly what the Youth Sports Program aims to achieve. Under the leadership of Youth Sports director Tameishia Mimitte Beard, this program brings the community together, teaching kids the importance of sportsmanship, teamwork, and the pleasure of staying active.
“The goal is to enhance the overall wellbeing of young individuals and instill valuable life skills such as discipline, sportsmanship, and leadership through a diverse range of sports and recreational activities,” she added. “All while encouraging active lifestyles, fostering physical, mental, and social development.”
With Youth Sports, children of all ages and backgrounds come together to learn di erent types of sports and discover the joy and values of being part of a team. Through this program, children are not only learning to score goals, win, or make baskets – they are actively working on building their con dence, forming enduring friendships, and creating long-lasting memories.
“Beyond the physical skills, these young athletes are learning valuable life lessons as well,” Beard added. “Practice, perseverance, patience, and experiencing the highs and lows of competition are some of the things they discover throughout the season.”
However, Youth Sports would not be successful without the dedicated individuals behind it. Coaches, often volunteers, play a vital role. They take on multiple roles, to include teacher, listener, support system, and motivator, more often providing guidance, encouragement, and unwavering support to young athletes.
“Their commitment and passion are the driving forces behind the program’s success,” Beard added.
Lest we forget, the parents, too, are an integral part of this community. Their support and e orts in creating a nurturing environment where children feel valued and encouraged are incomparable.
Beard has nothing but gratitude for having such exceptional sta in her team to be able to foster a sense of community among everybody involved. “I appreciate the opportunity to create a supportive and inclusive environment.”
Youth Sports o ers sports such as baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, volleyball, cheer, and many more. During summer, clinics introduce sports such as golf, kickball, and archery. All are available for children ages three and over.
Beard and her team go above and beyond, o ering programs tailored for all ages. Each program aims to provide a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where children can freely develop their skills and further their love for sports.
As each season comes to an end, you will see smiles, celebrations, and the bond formed throughout their journey. Trophies and medals may be handed out, but the real reward lies within the sense of accomplishment and the friendships formed along the way.
“Seeing the growth and improvement of young athletes can be incredibly rewarding for anyone involved in the program,” Beard added. “We are prideful and proud to witness these kids develop new skills, overcome challenges, achieve their goals, and witnessing their love for the sport grow.”
Kadena Youth Sports is more than just a program that o ers seasonal sports; it is a place that inspires and empowers the youth with lifelong lessons. Children of military personnel, Department of Defense civilians, and contractors stationed around Okinawa, Japan, are welcome to join.
