Welcome to Venture magazine! April means spring break for the kids, and we have TONS of awesome programming to keep your littles busy during their time off. To get them out of the house, check out our discounted fun at Kadena Marina and Outdoor Recreation on pg. 35. Arts & Crafts also has plenty of activities this month, from craft camp to origami and calligraphy! Also, don’t miss one of our biggest events of the year - Eggsplosion! Hunt down 50,000 eggs, jump around in bounce houses, and maybe even spot the Easter bunny. If you’re looking for some selfimprovement this spring, make sure to attend the Money Management course at the Airman & Family Readiness Center on 8 April. Looking to improve professionally? Mark your calendar for 28 April, to cross the Resume & Interview Skills class off your list! For this month’s Day in the Life Article, we talked to the 733d Air Mobility Squadron. They gave us information on PCS-ing via the Passenger Terminal, Space-A travel, and getting your pets on the rotater. Check out pgs 42-43! Earth Day is also this month, and the Library has an important discussion series about how we can do our best to preserve the world we live in! Learn how to upcycle a t-shirt while you get more information on how to reduce your environmental footprint. Spring is a time of growth, and we hope our readers grow while reading Venture magazine. For quick access to Venture while out and about, head to our website kadenafss.com and click on the ‘Venture’ tab to read digital Venture on the go! Thank you for reading, and have a wonderful month.

BETTER SPORTS FOR KIDS QUALITY PROGRAM PROVIDER OF THE YEAR! Written by: Ellen Ice
Congratulations Kadena Youth Sports Fitness (YSF) for an incredible achievement! Kadena YSF won this notable award for 2018-2019, and their hard work and dedication has brought home the title of Provider of the Year for a second year in a row. Rudy McGriff, the Youth Sports and Fitness director during the award period, said the award is a testament to his staff’s and volunteers’ unwavering committment to the kids. “My team puts in a ton of hard work and a lot of hours to make this program successful,” Mr. McGriff said. YSF serves over 1,500 children annually from ages 3 15. He said they offer basketball, cheer, soccer, volleyball, baseball, and softball. “Kadena offers a lot with the minimal spaces we are working with,” Mr. McGriff said. His best advice to parents waiting to get their child on a team is to be patient and know that YSF is working their hardest to accommodate everyone. YSF serves all families with SOFA status. He advises anyone who is PCS-ing to the island to contact YSF as soon as possible, to set their children up for success.
Ms. Saex said, “My favorite part of the job is watching the kids play and see them develop their skills. That is very rewarding.” Additionaly, both Mr. McGriff and Ms. Saxe were sure to mention their 450 volunteer coaches and staff. “We couldn’t have gotten this award without the coaches’ support,” Ms. Saxe said. She said they are an invaluable asset to the program, and they are always looking for more volunteers as PCS season comes around. If you’re interested in coaching and being a part of an award-winning organization, stop by Youth Sports Fitness at Bldg. 499!
we couldn’t have gotten this award without the coaches’ support.
“They come over leaving their friends in the states, and we want to make it easier for them to meet new kids and the best way to do that is to be on a team,” Mr. McGriff said. Mr. McGriff and assistant director, Ms. Maricel Saxe, say their love of the children is why they have the level of committment and dedication from the entire YSF staff. Felicity, Age 7 Written by: Ellen Ice
Audrey, Age 6
April is Month of the Military Child, and 18 FSS wants to honor all children whose parents serve. We recognize the strength and resiliency it takes to move every few years, switch schools, and make new friends. Because I am not a mother myself (I don’t think my dog, Pig, or my cat, Maxwell Todd, count in this instance), I talked to the beautiful family gracing the cover of this month’s Venture magazine. Maj. Jackson Dashiell, otherwise known by his call sign ‘Bash’, has been in the Air Force for over a decade. He has lived in locations all over the world, with his wife, Stephanie, daughters Felicity and Audrey, and son Tripp by his side. Dashiell is a HH-60 pilot attached to the 33rd Rescue Squadron. He can get a call at a moment’s notice to rescue someone in distress, leaving his family without warning. His seven-year-old daughter, Audrey, is at the age where she is beginning to understand the gravity of her dad’s job.
Tripp, Age 1
“My daddy saved a guy who was lost,” Audrey told me. While we were doing the photo shoot, the kids were obviously ecstatic. They understood a little of why we were out there, with six-year-old Felicity saying to me, “it’s about us!” When I asked the girls what was their favorite part of their dad being a pilot, they both exclaimed, “when we get to sit in the helicopter with daddy!” The obvious enthusiasm for their dad’s job was infectious.
“My daddy saved a guy who was lost!”

It’s incredible to me how kids adapt to such a sometimes-volatile lifestyle. When I asked Maj Dashiell what he wanted to say to his family for their support, his response was perfect, “I can’t thank them enough, especially with the children, they sacrifice so much and they never really volunteer for it… It’s just a life that they inherited, and I’m so grateful for all they go through, they move every couple years and have to make all new friends and I can’t thank them enough.” This is the exact reason why we celebrate Month of the Military Child. The girls didn’t want to forget their mom either though, and Felicity told me, “Thank you to my mom for cleaning the house!” At 18 FSS we have a few activities planned in April to give back, and it’s the least we can do. From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all the military families and especially children sacrificing every single day.
“I can’t thank them enough, especially with the children, they sacrifice so much and they never really volunteer for it.”

A DAY IN THE LIFE...
Written by: Ellen Ice
For the majority of people PCS-ing to Kadena Air Base, they will fly through the AMC terminal. Their first introduction to the base will be the friendly and knowledgeable military members assigned to the 733d Air Mobility Squadron. The 733d is responsible for processing passengers, their luggage, and pets on the Patriot Express, as well as Space Available travel. SSgt Tiffany Walther has been with the 733d for a year and a half, and said they never have the same day twice. “The Patriot Express is the busiest thing that we have, because it’s anywhere from 150 - 300 passengers moving in and leaving in a span of 24 hours.” She said the Patriot Express (PE) is a commercial jet contracted by the military, to get people and their baggage in and out of Okinawa, typically on PCS orders. “Most of the people that are on island come through the PE, they get here on the Patriot Express and leave on it. The main mission starts here because you can’t do the mission without your people.” She said the question they receive most often is about people traveling with their pets. Walther recommends coming in person to the AMC terminal, where the knowledgeable staff can brief you on the prerequisites.
The main mission starts here, because you can’t do the mission without your people.

733d Air Mobility Squadron If you visit the AMC terminal in person, you’re likely to talk to passenger services agent, A1C Ja’qurius Jackson. Jackson said his job is to answer any and all questions about passenger travel, to include Space-Available (Space-A). Jackson explained the tiers to us, going from retirees at Tier 6, to unfunded emergency leave at Tier 1. He suggests coming to the terminal in person for more information on Space-A or attending one of their monthly briefings. “It’s good to use if you want to go to mainland or a place like that because it’s a lot cheaper,” Jackson said.
Any cargo that comes in via air comes through us.
The best part of the job is working over christmas when we get to see people go home.
Another large component of the 733d is one not many people think about - the air freight side. 2Lt. Tessa Winkel is the officer in charge (OIC) of air freight. “Any cargo that comes in via air comes through us,” Winkel said. She said her job involves a lot of coordination with agencies who are dropping cargo off to go out and picking cargo up. “We are a strategic stepping stone,” Winkel said. She said their day to day mission is moving people and cargo, but in a contingency you don’t want your cargo coming on a boat. She said their goal is to get people and cargo on and off island as quickly as possible.
A1C Shelby Anderson is also a passenger services agent, and gave us a few other suggestions for Space-A. He suggests reaching out to your commander for Environmental Morale Leave. He said the paperwork will boost you a tier and gives you a better chance of getting on a flight. For regular travel, he advised sticking close. “The further away you’re trying to go, the more unlikely it is you’ll get on an aircraft, so there’s the certain aspect of luck, but it’s definitely worth it.” Anderson said his favorite memory of being a passenger service agent with the 733d was over the holidays. “The best part of the job is working over Christmas when we get to see people go home.”
The team did want to shout out their squadron for their part in coordinating the cargo and jets to help the Thailand rescue mission in June 2018. They said it was an extremely rewarding moment to know they helped get vital pieces of the mission where it needed to be in order to rescue the 13 children stuck in the cave. “Without mobility, that would have been impossible,” Anderson said. After meeting the team, I am confident from the first moment service members arrive on the Patriot Express, to utilizing Space-A during their assignment, to some of their missions involving air freight, the 733d will provide the utmost customer service. Thank you for getting us on and off island safely!
