EDITOR’S LETTER

April holds HUGE outdoor fun extravaganzas. The question is, are you geared up for the excitement? Tune in and read every word I’m about to tell you so you can plan out your month with picture-perfect ‘fits.

First thing’s first, blooms are ongoing and Kadena ITT wants to take you to Ie Island for their Lily Festival. How bloom-tastic is that? If you’re into water exploration, you’re in luck! Dive charters are back at Kadena Marina! Dive right in and let the venturing begin as you submerge in the underwater realm of Okinawa.

If you’re all about keeping it local, prepare yourselves for some “parfect” fun at both Banyan Tree and Chibana Golf Courses as well as Risner Fitness Center. Keep Banyan Tree’s Masters Tournament and Chibana’s Day/Night Golf 2-Person Scramble on your radar. Together with Risner’s Habu Hashire 5k to stay active and healthy. Just keep running. Keep running, running, running!

Karing Kennels is ahead of the game and has prepared the hottest summer collection for your pets to enjoy and flaunt. Run and snag the finest gear and snacks in preparation of your summer outings.

April holds an extra special significance as it is a celebration of the Month of the Military Child. Kadena Marina’s honoring the most resilient young souls in the world through their Kids Diving Experience event where kids get the opportunity to learn to scuba.

There’s more! Thanks to the Youth Center’s help, PURPLE UP BASH is on – formerly known as Eggsplosion. What’s more marvelous than Easter egg hunts, kiddie land, teen zone, and more to celebrate our military kids.

But that’s not all, OKUMA BEACH FEST is also this month! From live music, dance performances, laser shows, you won’t want to miss this!

Lastly, the electric touch of AMERICA FEST filled this town up with life, so we’ve decided to bring it back! We’ll once again open our gates to our friends and neighbors on April 27 for a “Bejeweled” time filled with delectable food, limited-time merch, kiddie land, and live entertainment! …Ready for it? I heard Lover – A Taylor Swift Tribute Band will be taking the America Fest stage by storm!

Don’t you dare let these spectacular events slip away this month! We’ll see you there!

Beach Soiree: Hamauri & Beach Opening

April holds many activities to explore and holidays to commemorate. It marks the beginning of a season where the weather gently becomes warmer, inviting us to spend more time outdoors and appreciate nature’s wonders.

One holiday custom Okinawa holds this month is “Hamauri” or “Women’s Festival” celebrated on March 3 per the lunar calendar, which falls on April 22 this year.

Hamauri unfolds a ritual moment for the women in the family. It is a time where females march down to the shoreline to perform a ceremonial act of immersing their hands and feet in the ocean. This ancient tradition is known to purify and cleanse their bodies of bad mojo, evil spirits, and negative energy.

Other rituals and traditions performed during this celebration are clam digging, indulging in local dishes during a picnic by the shore, and assembling by tidal areas to pray for a healthy life of all the girls and women in the family.

Partner up with Kadena Marina (above) for more ocean exploration and venture to Okuma Beach (below) where you can soak in the salty breeze and admire the breathtaking views of the Okinawa coastline.

Clam digging is a popular activity during Hamauri.

Hamauri traditions have evolved through time as families not only cleanse and purify their bodies, but many also take this day to explore the ocean with rock pool shing and seashell hunting while the tide is low.

In relation to the Hamauri Festival, beaches also begin to open as the weather warms up. April is widely known to be one of the best times to partake in various water activities or simply bask on the island’s blue-istic beaches and engage in seasonal events.

Witness as Okinawans mark the “Beach Opening” or “Umibiraki” with Shinto rituals o ering prayers for the safety of coastal dwellers and the swimming season ahead.

Hurry and “beach” the crowd before the popular shores are swarmed with visitors and tourists. Grab your sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses as you make your way to the stunning beaches for some fun in the sun with your favorite people.

Don’t miss our premier of our monthly OCC short film release on @kadenafss or on AFN pacific programming.

Kadena’s SCHOOL AGE CARE PROGRAMS

A Guide to Help Children Manage Anger

Thursday, 4 April

11:30 am - 12:30 pm Wakaba CDC

Learn tips on how to teach children to manage their anger in safe and healthy ways.

Let’s begin with a few quick and safe methods to assist kids in expressing their emotions.

FCC Provider of the Year Iesha Taitague

Iesha Taitague has been a certified Department of the Air Force (DAF) provider at Kadena AB since March 2023. She is married to Tech. Sgt. Troy Taitague, 18th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, and has 3 boys (4, 7 & 17 years old).

Camo Kidz Daycare adjusts its hours to accommodate each family's needs, sometimes opening as early as 5 am for supplemental care.

Iesha acknowledges the initial challenge of balancing work with home life, having to

integrate work into her home. But despite the demanding nature of being a child care provider, she finds it fulfilling. "I wanted my 2 youngest to be in a learning environment around other children," she added.

Geraldine Horton, Community Child Care Coordinator, along with the child care community, has nothing but praises and gratitude toward Iesha's professionalism, commitment, and support she gives military families through Extended Duty Care, PCS Care, and Military Spouse Appointment Care.

Our School Age Care offers a chance for your child to explore his or her individual interests by empowering them to make responsible, personal choices. Our trained staff takes pride in offering a variety of Boys and Girls Clubs of America (B&GCA) and 4-H programming. Both School Age Care locations offer clubs and environments centered on the interests of the children.

In addition to the everyday activities, our School Age Care locations offer a 10-week summer camp with weekly field trips and endless hours at the base pool. We also have family events like spaghetti night, family chili cook-off, Soup-4-You and our popular ice cream socials.

Hello, readers! Our apologies for a short hiatus, but we are back with even more mesmerizing photos that you’ve captured across this paradise island. Our featured photos this month offer just a glimpse of the amazing festivities here. They say pictures can’t fully capture the magic of this island, but these… these photos truly reveal the beauty of Okinawa and its people. Without further ado, let’s dive in!

Okinawa celebrated Lunar New Year last February, and @yors023 captured an ongoing tradition of fishermen displaying colorful flags on fishing boats for a fruitful and safe fishing expedition ahead. Flags can be seen dancing with the wind as fishermen paddle their boat across the blue ocean during a calm Lunar New Year Day.

As the island begins showering us with blooms, @tasha_schulze made sure to uncover Okinawa’s treasures with her daughter by her side. Together, they posed against this vibrant orange trumpets backdrop, adding a splash of color against the seasoned wall. Be on the lookout as you cruise around the island during this season; you never know what blooms might catch your eye. The golden rule? Always have your camera in hand when you’re out and about.

Okinawa has no shortage of scenic spots creating the perfect backdrop for family photos and @leandrabeard.photography_ seized the opportunity to capture this loving family during the tulip festival at Tropical Dream Center. Their beautiful smiles radiate throughout the photo that brings happiness to viewers in return.

Oh, how much we’ve missed seeing your submissions! Keep on exploring this magical island and remember to use #FindSomethingSpecial when posting on Instagram to inspire others to venture out and discover the hidden and not-so-hidden treasures of Okinawa. Happy posting!
