EDITOR’S
Note
April is the Month of the Military Child, so I want to start off by saying thank you to them for all they do. Our military children follow their families from base to base, say hello and goodbye repeatedly to their loved ones, and work to remain resilient through it all. To the youngest residents of the bases on Okinawa, thank you and we hope you find some extra fun this month within the pages of “Venture” magazine. Check out pages 12 - 13 for all of our Month of the Military Child events! Make sure to plan a stay or visit on 13 April for Okinawa’s largest water balloon fight at Okuma Beach. Their Splash Party is all day, and you won’t want to miss out! Visit page 22 for more information. The following weekend is my favorite event of the year, Eggsplosion! Grab your Easter basket and head to the Four Diamonds on 20 April for an egg hunt with 50,000 eggs! Bring a camera for pictures with the Easter Bunny. See page 15 for times and details. April has much more to enjoy. So, get ready to venture out and explore!

April is the Month of the It is time to #PurpleUp and celebrate military children across the world. We wear purple on Fridays in April because the Month of the Military Child is for every branch of service, and each distinct arm of the military can combine together under one color – purple! Kadena Force Support Squadron would like to use this month to give the military children of Okinawa a way to celebrate to the fullest. While Okinawa is certainly a beautiful place to live and learn, it can be a struggle to live so far away from familiar surroundings. We recognize the sacrifices made by military children as they leave behind friends, schools, and homes to follow their military parents who work hard to protect our freedoms. This is their time to shine, play, and be recognized. So join us as we #PurpleUp on Fridays in April and show the youngest members of our military family just how much we appreciate what they do! #PurpleUp Day All CDC Families • Wakaba CDC Fridays in April Children and parents are encouraged to wear purple each Friday in April to show support for the Month of Military Child. Kadena Auto Hobby Tip After a heavy rain or heavy morning dew, we suggest driving your car as soon as possible. Here on Okinawa, rust tends to build up on your rotors very quickly and is usually the cause of steering wheel vibration. It is sometimes possible to clean the rust by using your brakes frequently, like sanding wood with sandpaper. If that does not work, then your vehicle may require some maintenance. Stop by and we can steer you in the right direction! If you have questions, call or visit Kadena Auto Hobby Shop.

A DAY IN THE LIFE...

“Venture” magazine recently had the opportunity to talk with members of the 18th Communications Squadron (CS) and learn about some of the various areas they oversee. We spoke with SrA Andrew Green (a Mission Defense Team operator), SrA Brad Meadows (a member of the Mission Assurance Cell), and A1C Jayla Kelly (a knowledge management technician). Something obvious after only a brief conversation with these Airmen was the breadth of responsibilities that fall under the Comm Squadron. Not only are there many different sections that work together to fulfill the base’s communications needs, the sections are all quite spread out. From written communication to digital, the Airmen of the 18th CS cover it all! SrA Andrew Green works in the Cyber Protection Flight as a Mission Defense Team operator, a new addition to the Communications Squadron. Some of his work is focused on ensuring the internet switches on base are up to date and go through the proper security checks. Since the
Learning what we are going to be, how to do it the best, basically being the BETA tester- that’s pretty cool to me. Mission Defense Team is brand new, SrA Green enjoys the opportunity to trailblaze a new path, “Learning what we are going to be, how to do it the best, basically being the BETA testerthat’s pretty cool to me.” The Mission Defense Team operates as a liaison for cyber security to the base, they find a mission and attach themselves to it. In the process they map out everything from a cyber security lens to ensure security protocols are being met and exceeded. SrA Green is working on

new network management software for Kadena. The Mission Defense Team is currently in the process of making sure it will pass security checks, but once it is implemented it will be a major benefit to everyone who needs to monitor the network.
A1C Jayla Kelly’s responsibilities as a Knowledge Management Technician covers 4 main programs: Freedom of Information Act, SharePoint, Base Record Management, and the prevention of Personally Identifiable Information breaches. The FOIA program has a wide reach and can help when going through an employment process, a court procedure, or attempting to receive licensure for something. A1C Kelly, and those who work with her, ensures that people receive the information they need. SharePoint serves as a information hub and can also host training for people across the military. Keeping this program up and running is critical to mission success. The protection of personal information is a concern for everyone. The knowledge that our sensitive documents are being protected by the Communications Squadron is reassuring. A1C Kelly spoke briefly about her role in ensuring the base has access to cover sheets and knows the proper way to dispose of records at the end of their life cycle. The management of PII also ties into their responsibility to care for base records, so you know your information is in safe hands! While the Airmen in Knowledge Management often work behind the scenes, they are available to talk to if you have any questions on their specialty! A1C Kelly remarked on how much she enjoys interacting with other units as part of her job, “Since we’re the Comm squadron it’s weird because a lot of times we don’t get the opportunity to talk to a lot of people, even though we are communications. It’s kind of ironic. So, I like to be able to talk to different units and kind of

a lot of times we don’t get the opportunity to talk to a lot of people, even though we are communications. It’s kind of ironic. SrA Brad Meadows works as a vital member of the Mission Assurance Cell within the Cyber Protection Flight. He is responsible for the validation of Kadena’s cyber security initiative. He is part of the Cyber 365 initiative to ensure that there is cyber security around the base and that Kadena is meeting the standard of the Department of Defense and following STIGs (Security Technical Implementation Guides). SrA Meadows works to identify vulnerabilities and creates a plan of action mitigate them. As part of his job he gets to implement new cyber security policies and works as part of the backbone of the process to improve cyber security protocols. SrA Meadows coordinated with base-wide organizations in order to gather the necessary information to fulfill his duties of protecting the cyber domain and mission assurance. There is a great deal of behind the scenes effort and planning necessary to accomplish this mission. However, this work is critical because it reaches all Airmen on the base and their mission. The breadth and reach of the 18th CS is clear from the three individuals we had the opportunity to interview. The diligent efforts of the Airmen and those like them insure your information is secure. Thank you to 18th CS for you efforts in ensuring Kadena’s safety! VENTURE 43
