April is Month of Military Child & Child Abuse Prevention

Keeping Your Family Strong Every family has strengths, and every family faces challenges. When you are under stress—the car breaks down, your child’s behavior is difficult, or even when the family is experiencing a positive change, such as moving into a new home—sometimes it takes a little extra help to get through the day. Protective factors are the strengths and resources that families draw on when life gets difficult. Building on these strengths is a proven way to keep the family strong and enhance child well-being. See below for six key protective factors and simple ways you can build these factors in your own family. Protective Factor and What It Means

What You Can Do

Nurturing and Attachment: Our family shows how much we love each other.

Take time at the end of each day to connect with your children with a hug, a smile, a song, or a few minutes of listening and talking.

Parental Resilience: I have courage during stress and the ability to bounce back from challenges

Take quiet time to reenergize: take a bath, write, sing, laugh, play, drink a cup of tea. Do some physical exercise: walk, stretch, dance. Share your feelings with someone you trust. Surround yourself with people who support you and make you feel good about yourself.

Join a playgroup or online support group of parents with children at Social Connections: I have friends, family, and neighbors who help similar ages. Find a church, temple, or mosque that welcomes and supout and provide emotional support. ports parents

Concrete Supports for Parents: Our family can meet our day-to-day Make a list of people or places to call for support. Ask the director of needs, including housing, food, health care, education, and counsel- your child’s school to host a Community Resource Night, so you (and ing. Make sure Social and Emotional Competence of Children: My children know everyone who cares for your child is aware of your routines around they are loved, feel they belong, and are able to get along with oth- mealtimes, naps, and bedtime. Seaside at Kadena Marina

Your premier on-base dining facility serving lunch, dinner, & weekend brunch

S

easide at the Kadena Marina has been a premier dining facility on the island for a long time. In April 2019, after a renovation and facelift, the new and improved Seaside opened its doors! Patrons returned to the same elegant dining and breathtaking views, but now Seaside boasts a brand-new menu of surf and turf specialties. Seaside is hosting an anniversary party on Saturday, 24 April, to celebrate two years of fantastic dining. “We want to give back to our customers who are the reason that we are a success story. So, we will be having discounts and giveaways all day long,” said Dawn Walles, manager of Seaside. She went on to add, “We will also have some socially distant and CSD-compliant live music playing while patrons dine at their socially distant tables.”

HOURS OF OPERATION Monday • Closed Tuesday - Thursday • 11 am - 9 pm Friday • 11 am - 10 pm Saturday • 9 am - 10 pm Sunday •9 am - 9 pm Weekend Brunch ends at 3 pm

by Meagan Abell Seaside does not take reservations, so make sure you mark your calendars for this one! They will be unveiling a new dessert, too, only for the anniversary event, Tarte A La Seaside. A delicate buttery crust, light and tangy filling, topped with fresh fruit and cream. The regular dessert menu will still be available, and the chimi-cheesecake is a forever favorite. We suggest ordering both! Seaside is a premier on-base dining facility located right next to Kadena Marina on highway 58. Indoor dining at Seaside is allowed when permitted by your command’s directives for on-base dining. It is open to all branches and ranks, and they cannot wait to serve you. Follow along on Facebook & Instagram pages for the most up-todate info! We are the Seaside! “Where the food meets the soul.”

Tip of the Month: Don’t Get Rusty Rainy season is here! Metal surfaces, including your brakes, succumb to rust very easily in the humid Okinawan weather. To help keep your car in tip-top shape, go for a drive after a heavy rain or high dew-point morning. This will help clean the rust off your rotors and prevent one of the main causes of brake failure and malfunction.

CHILD Youth programs

by Meagan Abell

A

pril is the Month of the Military Child! Throughout this month, pay special attention across the base at all the Child and Youth Programs and facilities for the color purple. The month of April is set aside to celebrate military kids and honor how resilient they are and acknowledge the sacrifice made by them and their families worldwide. Join in on the fun and wear purple every Friday this month! While sharing in the celebration, we thought we would take this opportunity to tell you all about the Child and Youth Programs located on Kadena, and what they have to offer you and your military child. Child Development Centers The Child Development Centers, casually known as the CDCs, offer a top tier curriculum and facilities for preschool-aged children, six weeks to five years. Kadena Air Base houses two facilities, Niko Niko and Wakaba. Both facilities boast developmentally appropriate early childhood education activities, such as gross motor skill activities to encourage growth and STEM projects each month! The CDCs also offer Parent Education classes once a month during lunch time to discuss challenges families might encounter. This month, the CDCs are offering a class on how to focus on positive behaviors and interactions. Through hands-on involvement, kids will have the opportunity to thrive while being valued as an individual and nurtured. The CDCs also offer opportunity for employment on base! To get more information about openings, rates, or employment, be sure to reach out. Family Child Care The FCC program on Kadena also offers dependable child care, but utilizes a safe and healthy home environment as opposed to a school setting. FCC providers are certified, insured, and operate out of their military base housing. The providers support families in need of full time, part time, or non-traditional duty hour care. If you are PCSing to or from the island, reach out to the FCC office about free PCS childcare! You could be eligible for up to 20 hours of care. This program also offers an opportunity to spouses looking to stay home with their children. Reach out to the FCC office for details!

CHILD Youth Programs School Age Care Kadena is home to two nationally accredited School Age Care locations, Himawari and Shima No Ko. This programming is designed for children ages five - 12 attending school on base. The services provided are before and after school care with transportation. If your duty day begins before the school day, the School Age Care facilities can help. Also, when school is not in session, all-day care is provided. Camps are provided during those times in addition to field trips and extended activities. The facilities offer clubs such as Boys & Girls Clubs of America and 4-H to engage children in leadership building programs.

Youth Center The Youth Center offers a safe space with well-trained staff to provide recreational activities after school and during breaks. The lineup of instructional classes includes theater, gymnastics, or dance, in addition to an impressive group of clubs. Torch Club is a popular option affiliated with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America designed to instill leadership skills in youth today. There is also a Cooking Club, and a fan favorite, STEM club! The programming is designed to meet the social, psychological, and recreational needs of the children enrolled. If you are thinking about becoming a member of the Youth Center, stop by for a tour and get more information! Teen Center The Teen Center, newly located adjacent to Himawari right off Kuter Ave, is a space for Teens to come after school to gain friendships while engaging in stimulating activities such as the Keystone Club or the music room that comes with expert recording equipment and instruments! The staff also organize fun challenges like a Mario Kart Tournament or a field trip. The Teen Center can also guide your teens to the information they need for life post-high school. They offer seminars for teens and parents about college applications, in addition to many other options available. Be sure to stop by the Teen Center for information on how to join! Youth Sports & Fitness The Youth Sports & Fitness program, located inside Habu Fitness Center, offers organized sports year-round with an emphasis on enjoyment and skills. Follow Youth Sports on social media for updates about registration and when seasons begin for sports on the agenda, including Volleyball, Soccer, Football, Cheer, Baseball, Softball, and Basketball. Youth Sports is excited to announce Golf Clinics starting this summer! Sign-ups will begin soon, so make sure you don’t miss it. The activities are not limited to just school-aged children either! The program offers First Steps teams for toddlers and children preschool aged. If you want to introduce your kiddos to athletics early on, this could be a great opportunity. There is also opportunity here for adults! The teams and programming cannot stay afloat without volunteer coaches. If you are looking for an opportunity to give back to the base, to get a bullet point for your resume, or a way to have fun with a sport that impacted your life, reach out to Youth Sports about how to become a volunteer coach! Be on the lookout for details about Webtrac! Youth Sports & Fitness will be making the switch to online registration for the upcoming seasons soon. Remember to make sure sports physicals and flu shots are current!

hether you are brand new to Okinawa or a seasoned resident, you have undoubtedly discovered the joy of finding a vending machine on every corner. Sometimes there are several side-by-side, and sometimes you will see the lone vending machine at the end of a long rural road while lost and adventuring. It is one of those quirks of this amazing place that will stick in our memories! But more than that, not all vending machines are created equal, and some are a work of art! Local artists paint and design several across the island, and some are colorful and eye-catching from the manufacturer! A handful of Venture readers were nice enough to send along some images, and we are excited to show you! Instagram user @anewmac shared a picture posing in front of a beautiful floral painted machine that boasts local blooms and eye-catching colors. While out in the wild, user @KylieeAustin found a cute machine nestled cozily at the edge of a field just waiting for someone to stop by and get a refreshing drink!

We can’t wait to follow your adventures!

@HannahMonroephotography and her kiddos stopped at a summer-themed machine right in the middle of American Village to get a drink and capture the colors. Thank you for sharing with us, and remember to tag @KadenaFSS and use #FindSomethingSpecial while exploring Okinawa. Next month, show us your favorite restaurants with a view, and don’t forget to pin the location!
