EDITOR’S LETTER

Spring is in full swing! With the irresistibly perfect weather we have here in Okinawa, there’s no way you won’t want to go out and explore! This weather gets me pumped and makes me want to explore the island more; from flowers blooming all over to countless outdoor activities. I can’t wait to share with you all what Kadena FSS has in store this time of year!

Easter is fast approaching, so make sure to get your bunny ears, Easter baskets, decorated eggs, and sweet treats ready and hop on several of our celebrations just for you and your family! We’ve got events going on at Okuma Beach, Arts & Crafts, Aquatics, Kadena Marina, and most especially, Eggsplosion! Join the largest egg hunt on island, take photos with the Easter Bunny, shop local vendors, and more! It’s going to be a fun family affair!

If you’re looking for more outdoor activities, you can worry less and paddle more with Kadena Marina and Aquatics’ SUP CUP race. There will be four categories giving different age groups a chance to compete and win amazing prizes.

In addition, Okuma is also having its Beach Fest this month! Enjoy live music, performances, food, kids’ entertainment, games, and, of course, the beach! In celebration of the Month of the Military Child, many FSS activities are hosting their own unique programs to honor the incredible, resilient, and mighty kids that make up Team Kadena.

We’ve got a lot more! For those who want to explore the island, both ITT and ODR have monthly trips going on. One thing I’m thrilled about is ITT’s Ie Island Lily Festival trip! Allow our ITT staff to take you to Ie Island for an amazing island tour ending the day with amazing views of pure white Easter lilies and the ocean! Head on over to page 43 for this month’s Cultural Corner and get more information on this magical festival and get a little sneak peek on what you can expect!

If you prefer the indoors, we’ve got you covered as well! Spend a lovely time with your son at the Enlisted Club’s Mother & Son dance, enjoy drive-by dinners, watch movies at the Schilling on Fridays, and so much more!

Last but not least, AmericaFest is back on Kadena! The base will be opening their gates for our friends and neighbors on April 22 and 23 for some outstanding live entertainment, food trucks, kiddie land, static displays, and more! Rumor has it that two-time Grammy Award winner Colbie Caillat will grace the stage with her top hits to join the celebration! Mark your calendars and don’t dare miss this monumental event of the year!

AmericaFest 2023

Live entertainment and more

Are you ready for this, Okinawa?! The much anticipated and iconic AmericaFest is back on Kadena Air Base after nearly a decade long hiatus, and we are pulling out all of the stops! From April 22 - 23, the gates to the Kadena Air Base Airfield will open to our friends and neighbors for an unforgettable experience that will bring the U.S. military community and the allies and partners of Japan together in a celebration of our long-standing friendship.

The Kadena Air Base flightline will transform into an outdoor playground with something for everyone in the family! We’ll have a myriad of static displays, food, kids’ entertainment, and amazing performances you won’t want to miss!

We are delighted to welcome two-time Grammy award winner and effervescent pop-maker, Colbie Caillat back to the Kadena stage as she headlines Saturday night with an unforgettable set with the hits you know by heart and fireworks to close out night one with a bang! With two stages, be prepared for endless entertainment and performances to suit every preference from the III MEF Band, dance acts, and electrifying DJ sets!

Come for the entertainment, but stay for the food and beverage! Satisfy your cravings with selections from our 30 food trucks and 27 food vendors and then wash it down with an ice-cold beer or margarita from the Beverage Tent.

AmericaFest is a family event with a massive footprint dedicated to KiddieLand with rides, carnival games, and the always popular Teddy Mountain experience so you can take a momento of your time with us to remember.

Ie Island Lily Festival or Yuri Matsuri

As many of you know, Okinawa Prefecture is made up of numerous islands, one of which is popular to tourists and visitors between April and May. Ie Island, an isolated island of Okinawa, is known for its annual Lily Festival where more than 40,000 people visit to get a closer look of the beautiful pure white Easter lilies that bloom all over. This event draws locals in also due to the timing of when the lilies bloom and the Golden Week period.

It is said that Ie Island has a population of roughly 5,000 people, but visitors grace the island with their presence to visit several of its historical locations such as a large cave that housed locals during the Battle of Okinawa all throughout the year. However, the most visited attraction on this small island occurs in the spring during the Lily Festival where travelers fill every street and corner.

A mass of ferries, shuttle buses, and bicycles fill the ocean and streets to take people to and from the Lily Field Park where the main attraction resides. Not only do people get to witness the beautiful white Easter lilies, but they also are welcomed by other plants and flowers blooming all over the island during this time.

In addition to Cherry Blossoms blooming first in Okinawa, Ie Island’s Lily Festival is also Japan’s earliest, which is why tourists and residents alike want to visit where it blooms first. Easter lilies are also popular in Japan as it symbolizes purity, joy, hope, and life. In addition to the dazzling and colorful views of all the flowers, the aromatic scents and majestic view will also captivate you. What better way to view lilies than with an oceanic view?

When you get to the park, you will see boundless fields of white Easter lilies along with other colored ones with a jaw-dropping beautiful panoramic backdrop of the crystalline blue waters and the blue sky that will give you an everlasting memory. Not only will you get to see the flowers bloom, but the festival also consists of live entertainment, performances, food, drinks, and lilies for sale! So, if you like taking photos, exploring, or are a flower lover, be sure to book your ferry ticket to Ie Island this month!

Fortunately, ITT is hosting an Ie Island tour concurrently with the festival to provide you a worry-free and more enjoyable trip. All you have to do is visit ITT inside the Schilling Community Center to grab your tickets for a tour of the island and a visit to the Lily Field Park.

If you don’t like ferry rides, we also have our own blooms nearby. Okinawa has a plethora of spring flowers that bloom during this time of year, from purple irises, orchids, begonia, and more! There is more to this beautiful island than hiking spots and beaches as it also houses an overabundance of different types of fascinating flowers that bloom throughout the year.

If you happen to hop on a ferry ride to Ie Island’s Lily Festival this April or May, be sure to tag @KadenaFSS and show us how you capture the elegance of the lilies along with the oceanic views.

#FindSomething Special

Sakura or Cherry Blossom Season is over so we’re bringing you all the mesmerizing and creative ways people captured these ever beautiful blooms! As many of you know, Sakura blooms the earliest here due to the warm weather and we love how you all are embracing the beauty of Okinawa and its culture. Hopefully these photos inspire many others to go out and experience this beautiful season next time.

@fara_dominguez’s photo features the beauty of Nago Castle Historic Park during the Sakura Season as she walks toward the bridge enjoying the beautiful view of nature and the castle. We love how this photo gives us the rustic feel of such a historic place as Sakura blooms bring a pop of pink all over the castle. Fara chased cherry blossoms all season long and this is just one of the many places she visited along the way.

@meganpicha captured this cute picnic setup while surrounded by Sakura Blooms. This traditional custom is called “Hanami” or flower viewing. It is where families and friends have public picnics under the trees as they savor the blooms of nature while enjoying delicious food, drinks, and each other’s company. We absolutely love seeing how they are embracing the Japanese culture in such a cute and adorable way.

As @szirichan viewed Sakura in awe, she decided to take out her sketchbook and capture the beauty of both Okinawa and Sakura through art. Looking at this photo gives us such a peaceful vibe, from the view of the soft blue ocean, pink Sakura, and greenery, to her sitting by a hill painting her art piece. How about you? How do you like to view the beauty of Sakura?

No matter how you celebrated this year’s Sakura Season, we hope you enjoyed the blooms and views like them. If you decided to stay home, here’s your sign to start planning for next year! Spring is upon us, which means more outdoor activities. So, keep us in mind when you #FindSomethingSpecial.
