Head out on a trip with Outdoor Recreation, or if it’s a little too hot for your liking, sign up for FootBowl! I love football season and I can’t wait to see my team take it to the end. I know there are lots of football fans out there too, this is your chance to represent your favorite team. Toward the end of the month, don’t forget about the Good Vibes concert at Okuma Beach. As always we also have other delicious limited-time offers through our different food facilities, check out the Food section to learn more. Someone will notice hard work and appreciate it. Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn
Kasumi Jaehn, originally from Okinawa, has been working as a Janitor at Emery Lanes for about three years. She not only helps keep the facility looking great, but is also a jack-of-all-trades and helps wherever she is needed. During times of short-staffing, Kasumi-san stepped up and helped in the front desk, cashier, and anywhere else she was needed. She enjoyed the Janitor
position best, because she could go around the entire facility and she likes keeping things clean and tidy. Kasumi-san explained that one of the best parts about the job is being depended on and trusted to achieve her work. Kasumi-san wanted to give a shout-out to her managers, Lee, Steve, and PJ – she is thankful that they trust her to do a great job, which is a great feeling! Giving your employees credit when it’s due goes a long way, and she feels her leaders certainly do so. Some of her best memories working at Emery Lanes include closing the facility with her co-worker, who became a close friend. “We would do our best, efficient, and fast work while on the same shift because we liked working together,” she said. Kasumi-san recently applied for the 18 FSS Career Broadening Program, which allowed her to be crosstrained to work in another FSS facility. You will now see her bright smiling face at Kadena Auto Hobby. She is excited to work there because she likes learning about cars and motorcycles – it sounds like the perfect fit! She is thankful for the opportunity to grow and learn new skills. “This wouldn’t have happened without Don Freund,” the Community Services Flight Chief. Kasumi-san has learned a lot over the course of her three years with FSS, but the most important being to not give up and do her job to the fullest. “Someone will notice hard work and appreciate it.”

Have you noticed all of the crazy weather lately? Yeah, me too! Our most recent tropical storm was a wakeup call for me since I realized that if it had hit our tiny island, I would not have been entirely ready. We’ve all been told to put together a typhoon kit, but what does that really mean? It means a kit compiled of essential supplies to keep you and your family hydrated, fed, and safe during a typhoon. Since there is a good chance that there are others out there like me who are not completely ready for this typhoon, here is a quick checklist for things to have in stock. • Water – at least one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days for drinking. You’ll want about an equal amount for sanitation. You can also fill your bath tub with water to be used for sanitation. • Food – keep a three-day supply of non-perishable food – things that will not go bad in case the electricity cuts out. Foods like canned vegetables and fruit, beef jerky, applesauce, pudding, fruit cups, granola bars, power bars and cereal bars are great options. This is not the time to stock your freezer full of food – if you don’t have power, you can’t make frozen pizza. • Battery or hand crank radio to keep up with the TCCOR changes. • Flashlights with extra batteries. • First aid kit and prescriptions for yourself, children and pets. 26 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
• Dust masks. • Wet towelettes. • Non-electric can opener. • Disposable plates and utensils. • Cell phone and charger. A portable charger is ideal. • Games or activities for all family members. • Rope to tie down large outdoor items. • Towels, mops, and buckets in case of ceiling or window leaks. • Duct tape, because when isn’t it useful? • Sand bags. Please don’t be the neighbor that forgets to put a sandbag on their garbage bin lid. Listening to the melody of the garbage bin lid in the wind is not what anyone would call soothing. • Pet supplies. • Extra pet food. • Potty pads for your pets, if necessary. It’s best to keep these in the same general area so that you’ll have no trouble finding everything when you need it. Remember that although it may sound loud and scary outside, our homes are built to withstand the big ones! It’s likely that the home you’re in has already lived through a typhoon so you know it can weather the storm. Make sure you begin purchasing your necessary items well before an expected typhoon. You do not want to get stuck in the parking lot of the Commissary or BX just before a storm! Remember, you are only expected to be stuck inside for

about two days, so no need to doomsday prep – you’ll only stress yourself out. Next level pro tip! Buy or make lots of ice and store in a cooler when there’s a predicted storm. It’s not going to last forever, but A/C is no good if the power is out so it’s nice to enjoy cool water in the heat. Speaking of keeping cool, it’s a good idea to turn the temperature down on both the A/C and refrigerator. If the power goes out, you’ve got a head start with the added cold you’ve blasted into your house. We don’t get to bundle up very often here, so it’s not the worst thing in the world to lounge around at home in sweats. These storms can be quite scary for pets whose senses are on high alert so prepare for them to resist going outside to do their business. When you’re allowed outside, it may be necessary for you to go outside with them so they feel safe, even in a fenced yard. If you don’t have a fence, keep your furry friend on a leash. You don’t ever want them getting spooked and running off, especially during a typhoon. Make sure your cars are full of gas to weigh them down. If the lines at the gas station look way too long, you can find plenty of gas stations off base as well. You should try and park your car in an area that could be shielded from wind. Or, coordinate with your neighbors to park your cars all in a row. Safety in numbers!
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
And last but certainly not least, tie down your trampolines! While there’s nothing like seeing the next-day footage of trampolines rolling in the wind like tumbleweeds, they can destroy things so please flip them over and weigh them down! Let’s make that all outdoor items, though, just to be safe. If you have the storage space, move things inside. Your plants will miss the sun, but they’ll survive a couple days in the shed. If you don’t have the room, tie things down outside or bring them into your house. Be brave, friends – there’s only a few insects that can defeat the vacuum. Typhoons create a great opportunity to spend some quality time with your family or get some projects done around the house! And if the power is out, find your zen and chill out for a little while. For the most current TCCOR updates, please tune in to AFN Okinawa or check out the AFN Okinawa Facebook page for other typhoon related information. All this and more can be found in the Okinawa Typhoon guide, located at http://www.kadena.af.mil. If you have any questions about preparedness, contact the Kadena Readiness & Emergency Management flight at DSN 634-4404.

What is your favorite thing about Okinawa? - The culture. People are welcoming and I have made life long friends.
Why did you want to become the restaurants manager for Kadena Air Base? - People here in Okinawa love to eat and I wanted to give them a place to enjoy on Kadena Air Base. There is so much to offer within 18 FSS and their different restaurants, I jumped at the opportunity to be a part of something great. What plans do you have for future projects within restaurants? - I plan to give the people what they want, which is great food, great service, and some memorable moments. You can expect to see more options on the menu, entertainment at some of the restaurants, and more special events.

We know you’re prior enlisted (thank you for your service!)…where has been your favorite place to be stationed? - My favorite place I have been stationed at was Tyndall AFB, in Panama City, Florida. I was part of a great squadron, we were one big family. We still keep in contact today and support each other through out our carriers. I also love to fish, and fishing was great there.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... 909th AMU - Flying Crew Chiefs
From left to right: SSgt Jayson Burrous, SSgt Jason ‘Slim’ Cokley, A1C Francisco Zapata, SrA Adrian Pinnock, SSgt Alfonso Mora
Written By • Melissa Kowaluk | Photos by • Jana byrn
They say it’s not glamorous - but we’re not looking for glamor, we just want to give credit where it’s due to the many hardworking men and women on this base; and the Flying Crew Chiefs certainly merit the credit. While they’re on the ground, they’re servicing the KC-135 aircraft for inspections, scheduled maintenance, aircraft positioning, and other duties. But while they’re away, they do everything they can to ensure the working conditions of the plane and the success of the various missions sets they support. The Flying Crew Chiefs are a subset of about 22 members who have been specifically vetted to compliment the rigorous missions of the KC-135 aircraft. They service the entire Pacific as well as supporting other locations such as San Diego, San Antonio, New Jersey, and various other locations. One of the differences between this group and other Crew Chiefs is they have specialties - Instruments and Flight Control Systems, Communication Navigation, and Hydraulic Technician to name a few. This allows someone who has specialty knowledge about a particular segment of the plane to best diagnose and repair a problem. It is an efficient way to maintain the
40 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
processes moving forward. If a problem arises that requires the help of a specialty, they certainly help, but must also be cross-trained in case the specialist is not present on the mission. The flying crew chiefs must be mentally, physically, and emotionally prepared to keep a level head through various types of difficult operations. They are one of the most unpredictable groups I’ve encountered here, because there’s no telling when they are leaving, how long they’ll be away, or when they’ll return. They are a tight-knit group who tackle the many short-notice missions that require quick action. These missions include aerial evacuations, air-refueling of various aircraft, typhoon evacuations, and much more. The crew is small and hand-picked because they can be gone at a moment’s notice, must be very versatile, and equipped for the taxing work and long hours. I was fortunate to have the opportunity to interview five of them in one sitting!
There’s no movement in the air anywhere in the Pacific without one of these planes giving it gas, and these guys are who makes that happen - MSgt Schackelford
From an outsider’s perspective, this sounds like a thrilling and exhausting position at the same time. Although they hardly stay home, their work is immensely rewarding and impactful. SSgt Burrous shared one of his experiences with aerial evacuations that demonstrated how fast-paced and critical they can be. He explained that in one scenario they had to emergency evacuate 3-week-old twins who were unresponsive and not breathing. Although the crew chiefs were not part of the crew that tended to the physical needs of the babies, they were the ones responsible for gettting the plane off the ground that would take the babies to receive the care they needed. They worked tirelessly to get the plane ready for a safe flight and were able to successfully deliver the babies to their destination. “You get a first-hand grasp of someone’s life in danger,” explained SSgt Burrous, “and you try not to get attached to the situations, but it’s hard not to.” Having such close encounters with people’s wellbeing gives a different perspective on how quickly and how well the
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
job gets done. A few weeks later, they learned the babies are alive, healthy, and doing well. That level of gratification is surely hard to replace. They know if they are being called for an aerial evacuation that something critical has happened to someone, so it sets the tone for the mission and its importance. Another type of support they offer, which is quite different from aerial evacuations, is air refueling for all types of planes, including Air Force One and its supporting planes while they are flying in the Pacific region, otherwise known as POTUS Support. They recently experienced this during the Singapore Summit between the United States and North Korea. For this operation, they acted under diplomatic support, which takes a completely different mindset than other missions. Since they are on the road roughly 265 days each year and complete over 200 missions in that time, they’ve created a strong team bond. As a result of little down time, they have a higher appreciation for time off and spending it with those they love. “Enjoy the time you get to spend with your family because you never know when you’ll be gone again,” said SSgt Mora. They wanted to give a shout out to TSgt Joshua Gacad, TSgt Dougy Eames, and SSgt ‘Ski’ who are former FCCs. Thank you for all you do Flying Crew Chiefs!
