Note

August is here and it is time for my favorite part of the year, back to school season! As a life-long nerd, I have always loved prepping for the start of a new school year. Nothing beats a brand new notebook, fresh pencils, and a new start. FSS has tons of classes and resources available to help you on your education journey, no matter what it is you want to learn! Stop by the Kadena Library to find out about their online resources and find a class that is perfect for you. For the families with little ones who aren’t so excited for school to start again, treat them to a fun night out at the Officers’ Club for Kiddie Disco or the Super Family Club Membership Night. See page 49 for more details. Another big thing in August is the fabulous new Oki Scoops Ice Cream Truck! Keep an eye and ear out in your neighborhood and treat yourself to some delicious sweet treats. Tickets are also on sale starting 1 August for $50K Bingo at the Rocker Enlisted Club, grab one now to play for $50,000 in cash prizes! There is so much to do in August, so get ready to “Venture” out and explore.

Now what?

The Fun

For the beach lovers: Check out Okuma Beach for a staycation! Located on the northern part of the island, Okuma offers comfortable accommodations at a great rate and a beautiful beach with many activities to enjoy. For the thrill seeker: Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of adrenaline-filled excursions including rock climbing, river trekking, and scuba diving. For the history buff: Kadena ITT (located inside the Schilling Community Center) offers tours to the various historical sites around the island. The Battle of Okinawa tour is perfect for a first look at some of the most unique historical sites on the island. For the creators: Kadena Arts & Crafts Center is your one stop shop for all things crafty on Kadena. Stock up on your supplies and take part in classes on a variety of topics. They offer support for woodworking, ceramics, and much more!

The Practical

Culture: Moving to Japan can result in some culture shock! A&FRC offers a variety of tours and classes that can immerse you in the local culture and make you feel at home. Their grocery shopping tour is perfect for the new arrival and de-mystifies shopping at a store with labels in an unfamiliar language. Childcare: This is probably high on your list of “to-dos”, so remember to contact the Family Child Care office for home-based care or the CDCs and SACs for day care as well as before and after school care. Hours and phone numbers for all our facilities are located in the back of the magazine on page 61. There are also Teen and Youth Centers that provide club activities and a place to socialize. Animals: If you brought a pet with you to island, you are already familiar with some of the process needed to get your pet back with you. But, if you plan on adopting a pet from someplace like Karing Kennels while you are here, then make sure you ask the Kadena Vet for information on how to bring your new family member with you on your next PCS. Traveling cross-country with an animal can be expensive.

your Welcome to Okinawa! I have been here for five years now, and I have to tell you ... you’re in for a treat! Okinawa is truly a little slice of paradise, and it is the ultimate place for beach days, adventuring, and relaxation. I hope you take advantage of your time here. I encourage you to adventure off base and experience all of the fun things this island has to offer. Here are some of my suggestions: scuba diving, jet skiing, surfing, sailing, snorkeling, hiking, and rock climbing to name a few. The biggest mistake people new to the island make is staying on base all the time when there is a whole world of new things to encounter just a few steps outside of the gate. So don’t let new surroundings put a crimp in your lifestyle, take advantage of this once in a lifetime opportunity to learn all about your new home!

Enjoy your time, and keep on the look out for your next adventure!

A DAY IN THE LIFE...

44 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

Military and Family Life Counselors Okinawa is a truly beautiful place to live and moving here can bring great joy. However, living far away from the support systems you are used to can make adjusting difficult. So, when change like this comes along it is a good idea to be aware of how it affects you. The military and family life counselors located across the base can help! They offer their services to active duty members and their dependents.

In talking with one of the counselors I learned more about just how seriously that confidentiality clause is taken. The counselors cannot be photographed or identified by name to mitigate the chance of being recognized while out and about. No records or notes are made of counseling sessions and they won’t identify you as a patient if you encounter them outside of a counseling situation.

Everyone engages with their mental health in different ways. I spent most of my teen years talking to counselors and have always enjoyed the increased perspective those discussions provided me. I also know people who avoid therapy, for fear of a breach of confidentiality or awkwardness. One of the things that makes MFLCs so great is their commitment to confidentiality. As long as you aren’t in danger of hurting yourself or another person and aren’t engaged in illegal activity, or aware of any child abuse or neglect, or spousal abuse, their services are completely confidential.

There are 26 different counselors across Kadena and they can be found by contacting A&FRC or in places like the Teen Center and schools. Their work is centered on short-term, solutionfocused counseling, and they are committed to making comfortable contact with the people who seek their services. Some things to be aware of when trying to determine your stress levels are “the big three.” If you notice changes in your sleeping habits, eating habits, or interpersonal relationships, then it can be a warning sign of mental health issues that need attending. The same three things are something to look out for in the people around you, as well. If you notice changes in a friend or coworker’s behavior, make sure to check in on them and see if they need a friendly ear. Open conversations with others are also a way to help make sure your environment stays healthy. Your willingness to share where you are at (especially with children and teens) can foster deeper conversations and connections.

Change means growth, and growth means discomfort. So, when change comes along it is a good idea to be aware of how it affects you.

The military and family life counselors are specially trained to work within the military environment and culture. They know the issues most commonly

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV

seen in the community and have advice on how to handle the stress that comes with things like deployments, marital disagreements, and PCSing. Across the military community, there is a culture that values the importance of being “fit to fight.” This can cause some members to hesitate when reaching out for help if they are dealing with increased stress. The emphasis on confidentiality with the MFLCs exists as a way to help combat that hesitation.

Self care is not selfish, so take care of yourself! Ultimately, though, counseling provides a helping hand while you figure out how to adjust to the wide variety of circumstances that life can throw at you. Self care is not selfish, so take care of yourself! Being self aware and knowing when to reach out for help can make even the most difficult situation a little easier. It is important to seek help early before it turns into a bigger issue, so keep a close look on your inner wellbeing and never be afraid to ask for outside help. The military and family life counselors also run seminars at various locations throughout the year. To find out more about the next seminar or to get in touch with one of the MFLCs, contact the Airman & Family Readiness Center at DSN: 634-3366, or visit them inside building 220. VENTURE 45
