Also don’t miss out on our second annual Friday Night Bites on 14 August at the Four Diamonds. This dog-friendly, family-friendly evening of fun features movies, food, and playtime for your pup! If you’ve been waiting to get back on the green, Banyan Tree Golf Course is hosting a tournament the first weekend in September - sign up now to secure your spot! Want to make your kids putt putt masters? They can learn the basics of golf with the annual Kids Drive Free program! Stop by either the Banyan Tree or Chibana golf courses for more details. On a personal note, this is my last issue as the editor of Venture magazine. I have been a proud member of 18 FSS for the last two and a half years, but my time on island has come to a close. I have loved bringing you ideas for adventures, and I hope you continue to explore this incredible island. Thank you for reading along with us every month and have a wonderful August.

Aprilia & Gouda “The Karing Kennels facility were truly amazing! They treated our two dogs as if they were their own. They were in constant communication with us to let us know the status of our dogs and if they were low on food or needed anything. They went above and beyond anything I would like to consider normal service. Even during COVID-19, they found a way to make us feel like we were with the dogs even though we were so restricted in seeing them. From the bottom of our hearts, we want to thank each of the employees for taking such amazing care of our dogs. I’ve been a fish out of water for as long as I can remember. Written by: Ellen Ice I grew up swimming in lakes, oceans, and rivers. If I could throw on goggles and go explore, I was there. For my fourteenth birthday, I asked my parents for my scuba diving certification. In Indiana at the time (yes, I’m from an entirely land-locked state and no, Lake Michigan doesn’t count), the youngest age you could get your dive certification was 14. So there I was, in the middle of the Indiana winter, having my mom drive me to the YMCA every night for a few weeks for classes. I was by far the youngest one there; the next person closest to me in age was 21 years older! I got my dive certification as an eighth grader, and I’ve been inseparable from the water ever since. I was fortunate to come from a family of adventurers – any time off was spent road tripping, camping, at the lake, discovering a new coast, or whatever we could feasibly make happen. When I found out I was moving to Okinawa, the first thing I looked up was the diving. I have dove all over the world, and this is hands down some of the best diving I’ve ever experienced. In June, I went out with the Kadena Marina on a local dive trip. As mostly a vacation diver previous to living in Okinawa, I had only dove off a boat and not walking in, as you often see shore entries here on island. I was thrilled to get the chance to get back out on the water on the Venture – that’s part of the experience for me. The skilled team took us out to Cape Zanpa for a couple dives on a beautiful Thursday morning. The current was strong, but the deck hands were extremely helpful in giving us pointers for where to go and how to enjoy our time. Under the turquoise water, a whole other world awaits. I saw the biggest pufferfish I have ever seen (he was close to three feet long!), octopus, tuna, parrotfish, sea snakes, interesting hard coral formations, and unique to Okinawa, old war relics. Our anchor was actually hooked to an old tank! If you’re not quite ready to take the plunge to breathe underwater, snorkeling is often an option on the Venture trips as well. The awesome thing about Okinawan waters is the manageable depth and fantastic clarity of the water. My friends on the surface got to see almost all of what I saw! If you’re interested in hopping on a trip with Kadena Marina, make sure to check out the next page for upcoming excursions. You can also follow them on Facebook @KadenaFSSMarina for updates on availability.
Happy adventuring!

A DAY IN THE LIFE...
Written by: Ellen Ice
An often over-looked agency on Kadena Air Base is the Legal Office, located near Banyan Tree Golf Course and Gate 1. Incredibly, this tucked away office has a staff of 30, to include nine active duty attorneys, translators, tax specialists, Japanese legal aid, and more. “We are the largest legal office in the Pacific and the busiest,” MSgt Edrianne Dianna Kahiau Flores said. Flores is the law office superintendent, and the senior enlisted advisor to the staff judge advocate. She is in charge of budgets, training, professional development, and more. The 18th Wing Legal Office is split into two sections - civil and criminal. The civil side works with legal assistance, contracts, private organizations, ethics, and many more legal matters. The criminal side deals with prosecutions, advising the government on legal matters, as well as international law for cases that happen off base.
We are the largest legal office in the Pacific and the busiest “We work together to balance discipline with customer service,” Flores said. Captain Gabriel Bush is one of the nine attorneys on staff, and is the current Chief of Justice. Over the last three years, he has held the position of Chief of Civil Law as well as Chief of Litigation. Bush said he didn’t intend to become a JAG, but said he felt like it was a perfect career path for him. “You get to put your legal hat on and be a real attorney and litigate and do heavy legal analysis, but at the same time you can be part of an exciting mission,” Bush said. He

Kadena Legal Office said his biggest duty currently is advising commanders and partner organizations on military justice issues. Some of those issues can include Article 15s, demotions, discharges, and any other type of UCMJ violations. “We help enforce good order and discipline,” Bush said.
We help enforce good order and discipline The Legal Office offers many services to dependents and service members on Kadena, but one that both Bush and Flores mentioned was their walk-in notary service. Customers are able to come in and get a power of attorney same day, as well as other services. “We want to give our dependents and military members a sound mind when it comes to their legal matters,” Flores said. The office also offers free tax help, which they said is utilized often during tax season by military members who need a little extra guidance. The Legal Office was recently recognized as the 2019 Air Force Legal Office of the Year, which Bush said is an incredible accomplishment. He said the rating period is over three years, and the congressionally mandated review is extremely intensive, with around 120 questions that need to be answered by any of the 30 staff members. Flores said their office received the highest score on the review of any legal office ever. Notably, the inspection also considers morale, which Flores said she is the most proud for receiving high marks for. “We invest in our people,” Flores said. The Legal Office is open daily, even over lunchtime, so stop by for any of your legal needs!
