T

he Firebird Drummers of Amelia Earhart Intermediate School (AEIS) are a taiko drumming, after-school club comprised of over 90 members. The group has been sponsored by Christina Scarborough, a teacher at AEIS, for 13 years. Christina and her family members are also the clubs instructors. The club has three different sections — AEIS returning members, AEIS new members, and AEIS returning alumni — each section meets up once a week during the school year and can execute up to 20 performances in a year. The club has three taiko drum styles to choose from: paranku, a small handheld drum; odaiko, a large drum with a shoulder strap; and shime daiko, a two-sided drum. The Firebird Drummers are given the amazing opportunity to make a connection with their host nation, immerse themselves in Japanese culture, build self-confidence, and create remarkable memories for their time spent here in Okinawa. Taiko drumming, also known as the “heartbeat of Japan,” was said to have been introduced to Japan around the 5th - 6th century from the waves of Chinese and Korean influence at the time, and has since played an important role throughout Japanese history. Today, taiko drumming ensembles called kumi-daiko are perfomed all over Japan, and you are able to catch these at different festivals and special events, typically in the summertime. The love for the sound of beating drums has also allowed this performing art to be known world-wide from places like Australia, Europe, and North and South America. Taiko drumming is also incorporated in the traditional performing art of Eisa. Eisa is a 400-500-year-old Okinawan traditional dance performed by 20-30 young men and women to send off ancestral spirits who are said to descend for the Obon Festival. In Okinawa, during the Obon Festival, which is celebrated in the seventh month of the lunar calendar, or August on the solar calendar, Eisa is the main performance spectators crave to see and experience.

AIRMAN & FAMILY READINESS CENTER

by Meagan Abell

T

he Airman & Family Readiness Center on Kadena is home to programs that can assist every person on Team Kadena. Shelley Merritt, a Work/Life consultant, has been a part of the A&FRC team for six years. She shared with us some details about their referral program. “I wish people knew more about our information and referral services. A&FRC is actually a main touchpoint for most services on base. Sometimes folks may know what or who they are looking for but may not know where to start. Our staff is excellent at helping either solve customer issues or at least know how to point someone in the right direction to get their issue resolved,” said Merritt. Meaning if you have a question about service, such as the Financial Planning classes, all you have to do is reach out, and they can point you in the correct direction. Merritt also discussed that if you are new to the island, a stop at the A&FRC building would be a great first step, even if you are a seasoned military family. Access to the loan locker while waiting for household goods to be delivered is a perk, in addition to information about key spouse connections and spouse employment. The office staff is excellent at helping redirect any question or getting customers to the right place.

VENTURE | KADENAFSS.COM 35

airman & family readiness center

A&FRC also facilitates the Newcomers Brief attended by all new members to the island. Leaders from across the base will speak to give basic information about base operations, in addition to information on testing for SOFA driving licenses, and an information fair will be at the end where you can find details about jobs, schools, and volunteer opportunities. Be sure to check in with the tables to get pamphlets to help guide your time here on the island. If you have been here for your entire assignment and are about to head out, A&FRC has crucial information for that transition as well. Whether it be relocation services information, classes about TSP, and financial readiness to help prepare for the next step, or if you are retiring/separating from the military, there are classes designed to assist with this too.

Access the loan locker while waiting for household goods.

Merritt wanted to highlight all the work the A&FRC program does with the EFMP families! With specialized programming and assistance for families who are part of this program, be sure to stop in and see how the staff can assist you. “I would like to highlight the Zumba Kids classes that were only open to EFMP and deployed families, but are now open to ALL! Our instructor, JoJo (also the EFMP program manager), is so much fun and has spent time creating this fun curriculum for kids to get some great exercise and have lots of fun at the same time,” said Merritt. Moving to a small island in the middle of the ocean can be intimidating! The A&FRC here offers options to learn more about the culture and customs of Okinawans. Conversational Japanese classes and information about ceremonies and literature about the beautiful area we live in are available. Cultural and language courses are also available. Stop by to see how to reserve your spot or learn more about the classes offered. Just remember, it does not matter if you are brand new to Okinawa, or have been here for a while, or if you are a seasoned military spouse or Active Duty member, A&FRC has a program that can help you and warm staff members to help answer all your questions!
