Karing Kennels

“Our Perfect Companions never have fewer than four feet” – Colette Article by Lia Davis | Design by Yuka Kinjo

T

he military community knows mobility and the burdens that come with the nomadic life it calls for. We move our spouses and our kids at a relentless pace, expecting everyone and everything to grow and thrive where it is planted because the mission demands it. International PCS orders don’t just apply to the humans in each household, however. Any pet owner knows those orders include the four-legged friends we graft into our families along the way. Karing Kennels understands the vital role cats and dogs play in the lives of military families and have offered invaluable support to military pet owners for over 20 years. Their state-of-the-art kenneling, grooming, and retail facility sitting immediately inside Gate 3 on Kadena Air Base is the only oninstallation activity of its kind in Okinawa. Their adoption clinic, just off base, serves the greater community by facilitating the adoption process through stray retrieval and veterinary follow-up, concluding with adoption. For any pet-owner or prospective pet owner, Karing Kennels, with their skilled and compassionate staff, is a one-of-a-kind resource. The facility lives up to its name. The manager, Ms. Anayeli Anthis-Roberts, got her start at Ground Zero, working as an Animal Caretaker for kenneled animals back in 2018. Over the past four years, she worked her way up until finally promoting to Activity Manager last May. No stranger to animals from an early age, she grew up on a ranch in Arizona, her family owning 13 Australian Shepherds at one point. Interactions with Karing Kennels staff — from the front desk, to the grooming shop, to the caretakers administering medication to kenneled dogs in their runs -- you can sense a shared compassion for animals from the top down.

BOARDING No other facility operates at the capacity of Karing Kennels, on or off base. With 78 Kennels, the facility manages everyday boarding and grooming volume while also being able to guarantee boarding for pets in quarantine due to PCS-in protocols. A quick tour of the kennel area is surprisingly clean. The dogs are happy, and caretakers rush past, escorting dogs from their kennel to the play area. You see lots of movement and interaction, not a common sight in other kennels. Anayeli discusses their cleaning procedures when I comment at how good it smells. “We clean the entire boarding facility from wall to floor every single day, 7 days a week.” A few years ago, they started using a specialized cleaning solution called KennelSol that eliminates the spread of ringworm, Bordetella, and Distemper — three common and contagious ailments amongst domesticated animals. Since the adoption of KennelSol, Karing Kennels has never experienced an outbreak of any kind. No small feat for a facility of its size and throughput.

Kenneled dogs receive two walks a day while caretakers make the rounds from 6:45 to 10:45 am, administering medications, filling food and water bowls, and doing the laundry to ensure as sterile an environment as possible. The second shift makes its rotation from 3 to 6:30 pm, guaranteeing that animals on a 12-hour medication cycle stay on schedule. Boarding your pet here couldn’t be easier, as bedding is provided and food is available for $1/feeding. They use veterinary grade, chicken-free food as many dogs have an allergy to that ingredient, and grain-free food is available upon request. The same options exist for cat boarding, and Karing Kennels proudly boasts cat playtime for friendly cats in their dedicated cat playroom that features tiered platforms, tunnels, and toys.

For more information, please contact Karing Kennels or follow them on Facebook. Boarding Facility • 966-7339 • 036-868-2235 | Bldg 4065 @KadenaKaringKennelsBoardingFacility Pet Adoption Facility • 966-7338 • 036-868-2234 | Bldg 54300 @KadenaKaringKennelsAdoptionFacility

We clean the entire boarding facility from wall to floor every single day, 7 days a week.

GROOMING The grooming studio is a major operation with 8 stations, occupied with cute pooches in the middle of a pampering fit for a human. I only saw wagging tails and gummy grins as each certified groomer carefully shaved, clipped, and blow dried each grateful pup. All grooming services use only all-natural and gentle formulas to shampoo and deodorize. Those exact products are available for sale in the retail area so you can keep your pet fresh in between groomings. Walk-in services for nail trimming, ear cleaning, gland expression, and teeth brushing for cats are guaranteed until 2 pm every day, all at an affordable price, with discounts offered for club members. Karing Kennel’s commitment to health and cleanliness is evident with their requirement for current rabies, Bortatella, and Distemper vaccinations for any pet requiring grooming or boarding services. The staff will kindly remind pet owners when any of these vaccinations are coming due so pet owners can schedule those appointments accordingly.

RETAIL

PCS-ing?

The retail section offers pet owners a selection of items difficult to find elsewhere on island. Seasonal rotations of products match the needs of the pet and pet owner. For the month of August, look for life vests, water toys, and “cooling” toys to help your pet beat the Okinawan heat. The sales floor dedicates about half of its footprint to the sale of all natural, elevated dog food and natural treats from veterinarian-trusted brands like Ancestry and Canine Caviar, while the other half features leashes and performance harnesses and collars for dogs of every size and accessories like collapsible water bowls. If you are the kind of pet owner that celebrates pet birthdays, Karing Kennels features canine-friendly “birthday cake” mixes that simply mix with water and bake in the oven.

If your time in Okinawa is coming to a close, Karing Kennels sells PCS kits with items that will ensure a safe and comfortable journey to your next station. The kit includes stainless steel replacement bolts to fortify your travel kennel for transport, Shipper’s Declaration labels so all instructions and special care needs are known, piddle pads for cleanliness, and orientation labels so that the kennel is kept upright at all times. A special food bowl with fasteners and an adjustable water drip attachment provides your pet with easy access to nutrition and hydration during their long trip. Karing Kennels staff is well versed in the PCS process for pets and can point you to the right resources so you can complete your PCS checklist with ease. Visit the Karing Kennels tab on kadenafss.com to view helpful resources for PCS guidelines, forms, and off-base clinic options. Karing Kennels takes pride in the work they do for military families and their beloved pets. From their retail to their kenneling services and the grooming in between, every aspect of this facility points toward a compassionate support for the health and well-being of the four-legged friends that complete our military family.

ELM is a 50-week program focused on the development of children in a wide-variety of ways. It encourages and strengthens the academic skills of children even in the infancy stage by breaking down 14 foundational skills into five areas: communication and language, cognitive, self-regulation, social-emotional, and physical health.

CYP Spotlight Mr. Nozomu Uchimura, a CYPA assigned to Preschool Classroom 1, does an exceptional job at creating enriching experiences for preschool children. His genuine love and compassion for children shows through in his daily interactions and the time and effort he puts forth to improving the overall environment for children. Mr. Nozomu has a bachelors degree in International Business, however, his dedication and service to military families makes him a wonderful asset to Wakaba Child Development Center.
