Jingle bells, jingle bells, jingle all the way... It’s that time of year again! The twinkling lights, carolers spreading holiday cheer, the smell of freshly baked cookies, the joyful laughter of children and adults alike, and Santa photos everywhere you turn – it can only mean one thing: the jolliest holiday of all has arrived! Buckle your sleigh belts as I provide you a rundown of some of the activities Kadena FSS has prepared for you this ho-ho-ho-liday! To start, a holiday season would not be complete without Santa photos and what better way to commemorate this season with fun and unique snapshots with Saint Nicholas himself. Living in a foreign country opens up unique and fresh inspirations for your holiday photos. Allow Kadena Marina and Kadena Aquatics’ expertise to help you produce a unique take on photos with Santa, underwater! Don’t overlook your furry friends – Karing Kennels has prepared their facility for Photos with Santa Paws. Lastly, consider a trip up north to capture some festive moments with Santa at Okuma Beach. Once you’ve secured your holiday photos, you can enjoy a months’ worth of festive celebrations with FSS. Thanks to warmer-than-typical weather, we have activities that you might not associate with December. Witness as lights illuminate the night sky at Southeast Botanical Gardens, Murasaki Mura, and the zoo. Make the most of your time and money with ITT’s discounted tickets today! Leave it to ODR to take you on a refreshing hike and Kadena Fitness for a Jingle Jog after indulging on delicious holiday treats all month long. If you’re missing and yearning for an experience that reminds you of home, sign up for ODR’s 2024 ski trips to mainland Japan and spend the early months of the year carving fresh powder on the peaks of Hokkaido. Alternatively, embrace the island vibes as you sail or paddle with Santa with the help of Kadena Aquatics and Kadena Marina. There are a plethora of festivities taking place, so be sure to browse through the contents of this edition and list all the activities that spark your interest! Last but certainly not the least, the grandest, jolliest, merriest, and brightest celebration of all is here! Prepare for the magic of Christmas with 18 FSS’ Tinsel Town 2023! We look forward to your joyful presence as we light the tree and celebrate the season with music, games, and more! But wait! New Year’s Eve and Day events are also featured here! Hurry and dive deep into the pages now to see what’s in store! On behalf of Kadena FSS Marketing Office, happy holidays! May you have an unforgettable holiday season ahead.

Every featured image in this month’s edition highlights your bravery, creativity, and willingness to try new experiences; it’s all worthy of global recognition! Join me as we dive into a sneak peek of our friends’ experiences here in Okinawa, and you may possibly find something intriguing to consider for your next adventure. @oki_hangin’s photo could easily be included in a TV show scene! This captivating image perfectly captures the extraterrestrial beauty and serenity of the coastline. Having the opportunity to see things from a different perspective of the enchanting moment when the pristine crystal-clear blue ocean meets the sandy shore, displaying such a harmonious and perfectly blended palette of colors, is truly marvelous. For those who have drones, let @oki_hangin be your guide to capturing the breathtaking landscapes Okinawa is popularly recognized for.
@kameron_urquhart checked an exceptional encounter off her bucket list when she went snorkeling with a whale shark. The fearless @kameron_urquhart managed to peacefully coexist with this whale shark in the underwater world, going as far as feeding it. This awe-inspiring, picture-perfect, and exhilarating experience made it even better with fish swimming around them. What an adventure!
Back to the surface, we have @anastasiyanee showing us yet another natural wonders of the island where blossoms are found in every corner. The vibrant hues of pink, red, and yellow hibiscus flowers contrasting the lush green leaves make for the perfect photo backdrop, with a park bench for avid explorers and photography lovers to strike a pose in. This is your sign to capture those instagrammable spots you find when venturing out and make those memories last forever. Make this holiday season truly unforgettable by going on exciting and unique adventures with your friends and family. Don’t forget, you can explore the many thrilling undertakings with Kadena ITT and ODR and capture photos that will serve as heartwarming reminders of the wonderful time you’ve had here in Okinawa. Happy holidays, readers! May you have more adventures and create unforgettable memories with family and friends. Oki CULTURAL CORNER
Winter Solstice or “Toji” in Okinawa Article by Janelle Rivera | Design by Diana Lopez Hansen Over the past year, Oki Cultural Corner has been dedicated to showcasing the various cultural celebrations, holidays, special
occasions, and traditions of Japan, more specifically, Okinawa. Throughout this time, we have gained knowledge, insight, and even had the privilege to witness firsthand how the local community commemorates their national holidays. As you may have observed, Japan is renowned for its distinctive and meaningful ways of safeguarding and paying tribute to its traditions and culture; many of which have originated back in ancient history. This month is no exception; join me in discovering the significance of one of Japan’s December traditional celebrations: Winter Solstice or “Toji.” Observed on December 22, winter solstice or hibernal solstice refers to when the Earth is inclined away from the Sun, resulting to the shortest daylight hours and the longest night.
The origin of Toji dates back to the principles of Yin and Yang from the Chinese philosophy, epitomizing harmony and balance of life’s energy. This day being the shortest day of the year aligns to the darkness and cold of “Yin.” Winter solstice is a cause for celebration as it marks the emergence of “Yang,” signifying brightness, warmth, and the promise of spring’s impending return.
One of the most practiced Japanese traditions is engaging in “yuzu-yu,” or bathing in yuzu, a winter citrus fruit resembling a small sized lemon. This specific bathing tradition has been a part of the Japanese culture since the Edo period between the 1600s to 1800s. Yuzu is rich in vitamin C, which plays a crucial role in cleansing and protecting the body against illnesses that usually accompany the shift in weather, even in Okinawa. Additionally, yuzu is eaten for good luck and the citrus fragrance is thought to repel negative energy.
Another coveted crop during this period is Japanese pumpkin or “kabocha,” which is considered special due to the challenge in cultivating crops in the winter months. Other in-demand foods during this season are those that have the Japanese hiragana alphabet, “ん,” which corresponds to the “n” sound. Foods like carrot or “ninjin,” Japanese white radish or “daikon,” noodles/thick wheatflour noodles or “udon,” and ginkgo nut or “ginnan” are among the popular choices for good health and wealth in the upcoming months. Festivals are also held where people gather to offer prayers for the months ahead. In essence, winter solstice is
viewed as a mark of something new, rejuvenation of the body and mind, and anticipation of longer daylight hours. What about you? What unique winter solstice traditions do you follow?
