EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to Venture magazine! It’s the most wonderful time of the year! It may not be the white Christmas some may be used to, but hey, white sand counts, right? We have had a year full of adventure, fun new events, and activities. You can find out more about what we did this year on pages 30 and 31! This month is all about the delicious food you can share with your family and friends. Don’t stress about making a big meal and instead attend a Christmas buffet at the Rocker Enlisted Club, Officers’ Club or Okuma Beach. Don’t forget - right after Christmas comes New Years! We have great parties lined up for you, check them out on page 45. We are happy to be ringing in the New Year with all our wonderful customers. There are still plenty of fun activities for the whole family - find what’s right for you!

Parents, when they PCS come tell me what a difference I’ve made in their child’s life, and that’s extremely rewarding. Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn The Force Support Squadron strives to provide the best quality services for its customers - and that not only includes fun recreational activities, but also great quality care for children and family members. Cue, the Youth Center. A facility specifically for kids ages 8 - 12 which serves as a fanstastic place for kids to feel at home, to make new friends, and learn lifelong lessons. Mr. Bryan Lock, a Program Assistant at the Youth Center for the last two years, has built a career of 38 years working with kids from all ages and all walks of life. The kids know him as Mr. Bryan so we’ll refer to him as such! He has been a valued member of their team over these years. His career has included working with his church teen members, substitute teaching, state-sponsored kids, and in various administrative roles.
beneficial for family life and for the kids’ social development. The Youth Center’s staff of 25 interact with over 1,000 kids per week, and they love working with each one! The Youth Center is structured to help build more responsibility and independence in young kids - the staff is always there to help guide kids along. Mr. Bryan wanted to give a shout-out to Ms. Cathy, Mr. Dan and Mr. Warren for being great leaders and mentors. Thank you to Mr. Bryan and all the staff at the Youth Center for being great influences on our future generation!
Mr. Bryan had great mentors growing up and wanted to have the same kind of positive influence on future generations. He’s passionate about helping kids grow and develop into great adults. Being a part of a military base, he explained sometimes kids need different kinds of support - like learning to cope when their parents are gone or constantly moving to new places. A LOOK BACK THIS YEAR IN FSS
T
his year has been one for the books! Our little island braved a few big typhoons, had plenty of summertime fun, and brought some great concerts and artists to our customers! Here is a look back at some of the big events and changes we went through this year.
The Kadena Marina relaunched it’s sailing program after three years! They hadn’t been able to find a Sailing Instructor to fit the mold, until Mr. Karl Kuehner came along. The Sailing Program now teaches students how to sail the high seas once more. It’s a great opportunity to take advantage of while in Okinawa since we are located right by the ocean. Arts & Crafts hosted its first Gallery Gala event, where creative minds showcased their artwork for the public to enjoy. With various categories, all artists had an outlet to allow their creativity to shine. Attendees of the Gallery Gala browsed the artwork while enjoying beverages and hors d’oeuvres, just like at a big art gallery opening. We look forward to seeing next year’s art!

Throughout the entire month of May, we hosted Smile Days - a new program geared toward thanking our customers for their continued patronage and support. Smile Days is hosted at all Air Force bases around the world, and boy was it a success! During the entire month FSS gave away prizes, discounts, and had a drawing where lucky customers won $18,000 total in cash! In May came the long-awaited opening of the brand new 56,000 square foot Rocker Enlisted Club. This beautiful, modern, and chic building will host many big events such as Wine Fest! There is something to do at the Rocker every day of the week and activities for any interest. October was a month filled with great big events, and this year was no different! There was Domo Days, similar to Smile Days, where FSS thanks customers by giving away fabulous prizes! This year the grand prizes consisted of a $3,000 doit-yourself travel voucher, a $1,500 do-it-yourself travel voucher, and an $850 dive or snorkel charter! FSS wouldn’t exist without our wonderful customers, so we are always finding new ways of saying thank you. We also brought you concerts like Khalid and Maggie Lindemann and the two day long Kadena Music Fest. We even broke our record attendance at the Okuma Beach Fright Fest! It was a busy and wonderful month filled with great activities. These are just a few of the big events this year, there are many more great events and activities that take place around Kadena in an effort to bring you the best experience possible while you’re on Okinawa. If you’re new to the island, welcome! There is so much in store for you to explore.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF...
18th Security Forces Squadron
Written By • Elizabeth Bryan Photos by • Jana byrn
We see the 18th Security Forces Squadron every day as we make our way on or off base. We see Airmen patrolling the base and on the flightline making sure Kadena Air Base is safe and secure. What one might not realize within those brief interactions is the long hours they put in every single day to keep us safe. We had the opportunity to meet with A1C William Hallowes, a Response Force Leader and member of Bravo Flight at Security Forces, to learn about what a typical day looks like for him. A1C Hallowes arrives at work by 4 am, hours before most of us have started our morning coffee. His day begins in the armory, ensuring that he has all of the equipment necessary to perform his duties. He picks up his weapon, grabs his gear, and lines up for a briefing on all of the things they need to know for the day. 48 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
This briefing includes items like incidents that happened the night before, ongoing situations, and potential security breaches to watch out for during that day’s shift. After the briefing, they head out to their duty station for the day. These stations include areas like the gates, flightline, or patrolling. Security Forces provides an important presence on the flightline. Kadena Air Base is home to many high-level security resources that require additional surveillance. The KC-130 and RC-135 jets are two of those resources that require a watchful eye. One of A1C Hallowes’s duties is to ensure access to the jets is limited by patrolling the flightline and responding when someone attempts to enter without authorization. Another potential duty station is one everyone has seen - the gates of Kadena.
I actually enjoy being at the gates. I get to see a lot of people and to talk to a lot of people. I see all of the different personalities. Something that is not immediately obvious to an observer is the vigilance required to hold such a post. While the majority of the over 60,000 people entering Kadena Air Base are residents or employees, it is critical that the Security Forces member at the gate is alert for signs of trouble. Security Forces members like A1C Hallowes are always on guard to ensure our safety from those who try to access the base without authorization. While guarding the gate can be a thankless task, A1C Hallowes is fond of it. He said, “Believe it or not, I actually enjoy being at the gates. I get to see a lot of people and to talk to a lot of people. I see all of the different personalities.” Patrolling the base is another key function of Security Forces that is necessary to ensure the safety of Kadena Air Base. Our base is one of the largest in the Air Force so the task of patrolling it can be a daunting one. Security Forces, however, is always observant and ready to respond during an emergency.
It is clear to see that the 18th Security Forces Squadron is critical to the wing mission. Without security, all of the Air Force resources we have access to would be in danger. Security Forces keeps people out that would affect or harm the mission in any way. When asked if he had any shout outs, A1C Hallowes responded with Bravo Flight. He stated that some of his favorite memories at work have been the flight functions where they get together to celebrate the holidays despite their busy schedules. The military lifestyle can be a hard one, and the had workers at Security Forces put in long hours every single day. It is because of those efforts, however, that we can rest easy every night.
A recent accomplishment of A1C Hallowes is the completion of his Fly Away Security certification. This training allowed him to learn key aspects of providing security for aircraft that land in remote areas. The FAS certification process was an intense two-week course that offered training in many different fields, including combat.
