SCHILLING COMMUNITY CENTER
A
t the heart of every military base is a community center, and Kadena is no different. The Schilling Community Center, centrally located next to the commissary and Keystone Theater, has programming for all ages and ranks. Some highlights from the last couple of years include Kadena Music Festival, Eggsplosion, Friday Night Bites, and Tinsel Town. This year, programming has seen a pause due to COVID-19, but the staff is hopeful for an eventful and safe 2021 year. Natalia Pollastrini, Special Events & Programs Coordinator, stated, “My hope is to find a sweet spot in organizing events for the community that are fun and remain in line with restrictions so that they actually happen!” Nikoleta Day, Director of Schilling, has been at Kadena for about a year and a half. She stated her favorite event put on so far was Kadena Music Festival 2019. “It brought so many people out who love different genres of music to enjoy a night out with family and some food!” The lineup consisted of music guests Timeflies, Magic, and Sublime featuring Rome. While December typically brings the Tinsel Town community event that ends with a concert, the facility modified the event this year into a Tree Lighting ceremony with an outdoor movie and hot chocolate! (Check out page 9 for more details.) Candy Cane Lane, a new addition to the community center’s holiday lineup, will offer the perfect chance to get cute and seasonal pictures with your little ones. Across from the ATMs by Schilling, Holiday Greeting Card Contest participants will display their life-size creations with holiday lights for you and your family to view.

While Schilling loves putting on the big events, they also facilitate an entire lineup of classes, events, and fun! Be sure to follow social media pages or stop by the front desk for details about when and where to sign up. If a Japanese conversation class to better understand our host nation’s basics is on your bucket list, then Schilling can help you check that off. The class is a fan favorite and fills quickly, so keep your eyes open for when it will be offered. To learn more about Japanese culture, Ikebana class is a great option. Ikebana is the art of Japanese flower arrangement. It is a beautiful way to connect with traditions and discover an exciting skill to take back to the states with you. Are you a new driver or have a new driver in your family? Schilling also offers a new driver course for teens, adults, and anyone seeking a refresher course to check their skills. Be sure to stop by the front desk for all the details. If you are new to the island, chances are you are currently staying in a TLF. If you find yourself in need of a CAC-enabled computer, the Cyber Café in the lobby has you covered. With desktop computers and printing options, you can stay connected with your unit while still settling in. It could also be a great stop if you find yourself out-of-office and in need of a CAC-enabled computer. Recreation assistant, Megan Whyde, said her favorite class offered by Schilling is the Japanese conversation class. “Participants get to learn helpful Japanese words and phrases that encourage connection with local Okinawans,” she said. Whyde also talked about the game room located by the front desk. She encouraged more patrons to utilize it, especially if they want to relax or catch up with friends and family.

SCHILLING COMMUNITY CENTER The staff at the Community Center knows outdoor activities are important during the pandemic, and wants to remind you they have free putt-putt! Located behind the facility, the course could be a great way to stay socially distant and get some free fun with your littles. The staff knows the hardships military families encounter while stationed overseas. Day mentioned, “We want to give the community activities to come out and enjoy with their families.” Film Fridays have also been a big hit the last couple of months and will continue to run monthly until March (check out details on page 10). It is the perfect outdoor and socially distant activity for the whole family! Be sure to stop into the Schilling Community Center to check out their game room, Cyber Café, and class sign-ups! The staff is working tirelessly to bring entertaining events and programming in the 2021 year!

T
he Sapporo Snow Festival is an annual event held over the course of a week in Sapporo City in Hokkaido, Japan’s northernmost prefecture. What started with a few teenagers in 1950 building snow statues in Odori Park has evolved into a seven-day festival featuring around 400 statues spread out over three sites. The range of creativity for the statues is anything from traditional historical figures in Japanese culture, popular anime figures, and even sports icons. A highlight from the 2020 festival this past February were a Stonehenge replica, Buddah depictions, and Moai Statues. The three festival sites offer different activities for the tourists. Stephie Kruetz, member of Team Kadena, has attended the Snow Festival four times, and gave some insight on the best aspects of the event. “Odori Park is where the most action is,” she said. Kruetz listed some of the family-friendly events at Odori Park: Ski and snowboard jumping competitions, musical performances, an ice skating rink, and of course, the sculptures, just to name a few. The Tsudome is the second site, and visitors are likely to find ice and snow slides and other snow activities outside, plus performances, food booths, a Kid Park, and a warm resting area inside the dome. The third site is the Susukino Ice World. This area is filled with
28 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
ice sculptures for viewing, touching, and climbing, and features the Illumination Road, a popular photo spot, as well as an Ice Bar offering warm beverages. Ms. Kreutz described the event as a fun-filled weekend and shared that the attendees can see the entire festival in a couple days, but it will be a tough task! The festival changes its theme and has different sculptures every year, but the surrounding Sapporo area is just as interesting. The Sapporo Beer Museum is a great stop to sample freshly made Sapporo Beer brews as well as to try an all-you-can-eat “Jingisukan (Genghis Khan)” meal of grilled lamb, seafood, and vegetables. If you are curious about taking the family to this event in the future, Ms. Kruetz stated the train lines are straightforward and easy to navigate, and they have plenty of maps. However, Ms. Kruetz suggested to pack warm! Body warmers, heat packs for hands, and warm socks are what worked best for her. As we all know, travel restrictions for Team Kadena are an unknown for the future, but if you are interested in a trip to Sapporo in the future, ITT and ODR are great resources to help plan your trip! Keep your eyes peeled for information about the Sapporo Snow Festival, and travel restrictions from your command here in Okinawa. If a trip to the snow festival is on your bucket list, stay tuned for updates! Thank you to Stephie Kreutz for sharing photos from her trips!
