OKINAWA’S

Illuminations Article by Carolyn Osorio Photos by Jamie Acton Design by Takako Uehara

C

hances are (if you haven’t personally experienced it yet) you’ve heard about the many (many) light displays that show up throughout the holiday season here in Okinawa. American Village is transformed, resort hotels are decorated, and even malls create special light show experiences that light up our world. Whether this is your first holiday season here on island, or your fifth, the magic of Okinawa’s light displays never fails to make the season feel more festive. Perhaps no holiday light display in Okinawa is as loved or as visited as the Evening Illumination at the Southeast Botanical Gardens. So, when deciding on a cover for our December issue, we knew the Evening Illumination was the perfect Okinawan holiday tradition to share with our FSS community. Beyond the lush jungle plants, flowers, and trees that fill the 3 kilometers of the Gardens, the park also offers unique experiences that range from capybara feedings to making love locks. Founded in 1968, the Gardens were created when Okinawa was still U.S. occupied. The area where the gardens exist today was so decimated by the war that no plant-life existed. This inspired the Garden’s founder to create what was, at first, a pineapple plantation and then a botanical garden for people to once again experience greenery. It quickly became Okinawa’s first tourist attraction. Today, the Southeast Botanical Gardens is composed of two different areas (the Water Garden and Botanical Garden) and features 1,300 plants, flowers, and trees from Australia, South Asia, South America, and even Africa! Anyone who has visited, and walked across the street to the smaller side (the Botanical Garden area), to experience the Alexander palm-lined street might be surprised to learn that this smaller section is actually the original garden before it expanded to include the larger Water Garden next door!

We were lucky to be shown the gardens, lights, and different themed areas of the Illumination by our incredible guide, Daniel Yoshino. Daniel-san, a five-year veteran of the Gardens, came to Okinawa by way of Brazil and generously told us about the history of the gardens and the Illumination. We arrived right at sunset and explored the entire Illuminations in about an hour (at a leisurely pace). Daniel-san told us that the Illumination started in 1990 and has steadily grown every year into the 3 million lights you see today. The 180 staff members that take care of the Gardens work double duty as craftsman and artists that design and handmake all the light fixtures you see around the Gardens. Installation for the show usually begins as early as July, with all members of the Gardens staff lending a hand in the effort. Daniel-san also mentioned the two major focal points of the Garden’s Illumination are the Castle and Lotus Lake. The Castle, Danielsan’s favorite part, is a climbable multi-level light extravaganza featuring prime picture spots in a floral-lined room downstairs and along the lighted balcony on top. The Castle is situated at the top of the tallest point in the Gardens, allowing for gorgeous views of what they call Love Lake (featuring light hearts), Katarai Bridge, and lights-filled palm and pine trees.

“We want people to feel happy after these crazy years, and to feel warm about this place.” Easily the most show-stopping element of the Illumination experience is Lotus Lake. Featuring 300 handmade light displays in the shape of lotus plants, the lake is a dazzling display of green and pink lights with each light’s reflection in the water creating a dizzying mirror effect. Pavilions and bridges across the lake give visitors a variety of spots to experience the lake’s stunning views. (Fun Fact: The lake’s actual lotus plants reach peak bloom in July, giving you another opportunity to visit in the summer!) A new element of the Illuminations this year comes from the Garden’s partnership with Pokémon Air Adventures. This partnership between Pokémon and Okinawa Prefecture’s tourism bureau is intended to promote travel and encourage the meeting of new people as COVID-related travel restrictions lessen around the world. The campaign hopes to inspire people to experience the joy and beauty of Okinawa, with Pokémon by their side. The Pokémon section of the Illumination features life-size Poké Balls, inflatable characters, and illuminated character portraits made out of lights. The Garden’s staff hand-constructed the Poké Balls and illuminated character portraits. When we asked Daniel-san what he hoped people leaving the gardens this holiday season would feel, he told us, “We want to send a message to the people who come. We want people to feel happy after these crazy years, and to feel warm about this place.” He shared that this year’s theme for the Illumination is Peace & Hope, and that everyone who works at the Gardens hopes visitors can feel peace while in the gardens, and hopeful about the future. While the holidays here in Okinawa are not quite the winter wonderland some of us may be used to, there is still magic to be found and joy to be felt! We hope you enjoy the many holiday light displays throughout the island this month and have a wonderful finish to your 2021!

When To Go!

(Last admission 9:30 pm)

Another popular holiday destination is Murasaki Mura’s Ryukyu Lantern Festival, which begins on 4 December this year. For those who haven’t visited yet, Murasaki Mura is a replica of a traditional Ryukyu Dynasty town from the 14th and 15th Centuries. During the winter, Chinese and Japanese paper lanterns and lights decorate the streets of this historic town replica. The festival lanterns will warm up visitors from the cold winter (cold for Okinawa anyways)!

Ryukyu Lantern Festival at Murasaki Mura

3 December 2021 - 27 March 2022 Daily from 5:30 - 10 pm (Last admission 9:30 pm)

The Lantern Festival also allows visitors to make their own lanterns! Visitors can also peruse craft stations and watch live performers every evening of the festival and even enjoy special light shows that are projected right onto traditional Ryukyu red tile buildings. Murasaki Mura’s unique historic aesthetics allow you to feel like you’ve gone back in time while experiencing the sights and sounds of this beautiful festival.

Discounted tickets to both the Southeast Botanical Gardens and Murasaki Mura are available through Kadena ITT (located inside the Schilling Community Center).

Underwater Photos with Santa

4 & 5 December Want the most memorable Christmas card ever? Bring the family down to the Fairchild pool and get an underwater picture with Santa and his elves! Grab your elf ears and your ugly sweaters and take a dip to get your pic. No dive or snorkel gear? No problem! You can rent all the equipment you need from the Marina so you and your family can get a holiday photo that you will remember for years to come. The best part? The photos are completely FREE!

12 Dives of December! Get in the holiday spirit with the Marina by participating in the 12 Dives of December! In our version of Elf on a Shelf, customers will hunt for Carlos (our famous rubber chicken) on the Reef! All you need to do is come to the Marina, check out a mini Carlos, grab your camera, and head out to one of the Twelve Dives of December locations. Snap a picture of you and Carlos at the dive location and bring it in for credit! To make things a little more fun, we will not be telling you where the dive sites are! You will have to use your navigation skills to find the sites with our posted picture clues on Facebook. Once you get all 12 sites, you will be entered to win a Whale Watching trip for two! Car los
