GENEALOGY Written By • Melissa Kowaluk

Have you ever wondered to yourself, who are you really? You may think I’m referring to who you are as a person, and in a way, I guess I am, but I mean who you are in the broader spectrum of the phrase. Where does your bloodline come from? Where are your ancestors from? Who were they? The questions go on. I’ve never really delved into the world of genealogy, but I recently got the opportunity to find out more about how it all works. I attended the new Genealogy Workshop at the Kadena Library. This workshop is led by Tina Weinberg, who has been searching through her own ancestry for thirty years and has a wealth of information to share. Genealogy is the second most popular hobby in the United States! I was surprised at first, but on second thought I remembered that the United States is a country of immigrants, so it makes sense that people have a general interest in finding where in the world their family came from. You instantly have something in common with others who are taking the class, because they too want to learn more about their family’s past. The first and most important question that someone newly embarking on a genealogical quest needs to answer is ‘what are you looking for?’ You could be looking to fill in the names of your family tree, or you could be looking for information about one specific person in your family, or you could be looking to tell your family’s story. This last one really resonated with me because even though I don’t know much about ancestry or genealogy, I was immediately drawn by the historical aspect of it. Finding out my great great grandmother’s name is cool, but finding out what was going on in the world during her lifetime, how it impacted her and figuring out what sort of life she had is even cooler. Once you’ve decided on your quest and have an idea of what you’re looking for you can jump into the logistics of navigating the genealogy world.

Think of genealogy like a research paper, and begin digging. You would never cite Wikipedia as the only source on a college paper, right? In the same way, you should always find more than one reliable source of information before you take something as fact, Google does not know all. The best way to start is by talking to your relatives. It is a great way of reconnecting with loved ones, or just a fun new topic of conversation to keep you in touch. Ms. Weinberg explained there are several ways to store the information you find to stay organized. She also recommends you store the information in a way a certified genealogist would understand in case you decide to seek additional help. Finding birth, marriage and death certificates are definitely the best sources of information because they usually fill in many of the names and information you may need to get started. I learned you can also access census information, cemetery registries, obituaries, courthouse documents and local repositories to find credible and accurate information.

KADENA BASE LIBRARY

GENEALOGY WORKSHOP

TUESDAY• 6 FEBRUARY • 6 PM

Ms. Weinberg then showed us some examples of the multitude of ancestry and genealogy websites that are available. She explained the differences between them and how they each have something different to offer depending on the type of information you seek. Holly May, the Kadena Base Librarian then showed us a family book that one of her cousins put together over the course of many years. The book spanned over two centuries of her family’s past, was about 400 pages, hardbound and simply awesome. It not only included the family members’ information, but it also told family stories passed down through the decades. To me, that is really the special part about searching into your past. It makes you think of stories in your own life to write down and pass down to future generations. Ms. May explained that “family trees are not the only way to build your past, you can build it through storytelling.” The Kadena Base Library is here to answer all of your questions. The Genealogy Workshop will be held on Tuesday, 6 February. But you can also set up an appointment and the great folks at the Kadena Library will help find the information you need!

It’s not just cooking food, it’s more than that. It’s humbling [and it was] the honor of my life to work for them. Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn

G

ilbert Baboulene is a dedicated and talented French trained chef. Originally hailing from Niger, he has a worldly palette that he is bringing to this community as the new Club Complex Head Chef. This will be his ninth year working for the Department of Defense, most recently working at the Warrior Café in Bethesda, Maryland. Prior to that, he worked at the Mologne House, a small club and hotel in Washington D.C. These former two workplaces have one thing in common, they are both part of the Wounded Warrior Program. He loved working at these restaurants, not just because he loves cooking, but because he was a part of something much larger. Those who come through the Warrior Café or the Mologne House are recovering wounded warriors who have gone through many testing times during their time in the service. He learned that there are many challenges that come with being a wounded warrior and he is proud to have been a part of their transformation. He will never forget the kind and caring warriors that he met while working there. “It’s not just cooking food, it’s more than that. It’s humbling [and it was] the honor of my life to work for them.” He is looking forward to new changes and challenges since not many get the opportunity to work overseas. He studied to become a chef in at the Jacques de Romàs culinary school, part of the Academy of Bordeaux. Although he studied in France, he is very influenced by others. He explained that “it’s about the people you meet!”

His goal is to learn from others and become a wellrounded global chef. He is happy to be here and ready to learn more about the food, culture and history of Japan as well as exchange ideas and offer his expertise. Mr. Baboulene is excited to bring new flavors and ideas to Kadena Air Base!

Risner Sports Pro Shop Shoe insoles Do you constantly suffer foot pain? It’s probably because your feet aren’t being properly supported! Insoles provide benefits that can make walking and running more comfortable. First, the arch pads will be adjusted to your required level. Second, the heel cup will support your heel. Finally, the heel pads absorb the shock of your foot striking the ground. Thus, shoe insoles are not only for extra cushion but also for correcting your natural foot function. This may reduce problems in other parts of your body such as heel, knee, or lower back pains. In addition, shoe insoles even help your running performance. You can purchase shoe insoles at Risner Sports Pro Shop!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... Personnel Systems Management

E

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn

very Airman plays a part and contributes to the mission. It takes the whole force to ensure that the tip of the spear is sharp and ready for action. In this new monthly series of articles we will highlight what our unsung heroes do behind the scenes to make the mission happen. Elvin Albino, a retiree from the US Air Force and the Personnel Systems Manager

26 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

for Kadena Air Base, is one of these unsung heroes. He’s been at his current position for a little over a year and and whether you knew it or not, he has already impacted every Airman’s career and family stationed here. All Air Force employees have a personnel record which is made up of hundreds of pieces of data. As the Personnel Systems Manager at Kadena, Mr. Albino painstakingly

organizes the data and runs reports to ensure the accuracy of those records. The products he creates help the units and the Military Personnel Section fix personnel records, many times without the member knowing there was even an issue. The issues that he helps fix affect pay, promotion, assignments, awards, decorations, reenlistments, student dependent travel, DEROS management, WAPS Testing, etc. He has touched each and every Airman’s career by making sure their records are accurate and up to date. He also builds custom reports to meet the needs of the customer requesting the information about personnel records. Base agencies usually request raw demographic data about the base to fulfill different squadron-specific needs. He creates approximately 140 reports upon request per month, which is an incredible amount of information being pulled and organized in addition to ensuring accuracy of the personnel database. Mr. Albino is dedicated to the idea that there is always a smarter way to accomplish a task and strives to create the most efficient products for his customers to use. He helped develop a new method of distributing personnel products to units across the base and saved the Wing approximately 20,000 man-hours per year. He developed new method of reporting status of yearly evaluations completion which is currently being beta tested and is estimated

Having everything ready to make the customer’s job easier is the best part about this position to save the Wing 4,000 man-hours per year. He also trains Personnelists how to manipulate databases more efficiently to help the customers quicker. “Having everything ready to make the customer’s job easier is the best part about this position.” Someone had to create that personnel product or method of accomplishing the necessary fix to the record, and Mr. Albino is one of them. Toward the end of the interview, Mr. Albino showed me the steps to finding this demographic data. It is an incredible process to sort thousands of data points. Next time you find yourself having to request this type of information, remember that it is not just a computer putting it together!
