EDITOR’S NOTE Welcome to Venture magazine! We are past the busy holiday season and feeling the chill of the Okinawa winter. It’s also one of the best seasons on the island - cherry blossom and whale watching season! I cannot stress enough how amazing both of these natural wonders are. Cherry blossoms, or sakura, are revered as symbols of fleeting change and beauty. And fleeting it is! The season is short and beautiful. Head up north on a trip with Kadena ITT and see rows and rows of gorgeous pink blossoms. Visit the Kadena Marina to schedule your whale watching tour and see the majestic creatures in their natural habitat - it’s breathtaking! Take the cool weather as an opportunity to go on a hike, or hang out at Okuma Beach with your friends and family. Get out and explore!

Let’s take a trip back to 1997. That year, J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone first graced bookshelves all around the world and would mark the beginning of an era of fandom that continues to grow today. I was only six years old at the time, so not quite ready to embark on my first wizarding journey into the world of Harry Potter. Once I got a bit older, I finally picked up my first copy of the book. It was in Spanish of course, because I was still living in my home country of Argentina, but I will never forget how magical that time was. It was even the first book I ever fully read in English! This excitement carried on for many years as the new books came out and my parents and I would go stand in line at the bookstore for hours. I would then come home and not put the book down until I couldn’t stay awake. So many people

There is always something new to explore and it’s never too late to learn something new! Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Nagi Quirk
F
or those of you just now joining us on Okinawa, welcome! We are here to help guide you through all the new experiences of living abroad. One of the first questions you’re sure to have is how to communicate with locals off-base once you start exploring. The Airman and Family Readiness Center has you covered! The A&FRC is a wonderful resource that is readily available with plenty of useful information that will help you get adjusted.
I found that I felt more comfortable and willing to learn more after just one class. Not only that, but I really enjoy learning about Okinawa specifically, because you quickly find out that it has its own identity and culture apart from mainland Japan. There are also many other great classes at the A&FRC, most of them taught by Nanako-san as well! There are cooking classes, Kimono wearing classes, new spouse workshops and many more!
There are a few different language classes tailored to different schedules and needs. If you are looking to just learn useful phrases to get around off base, the lunchtime class “Japanese for Busy People” offered Tuesdays and Thursdays does just that. Or, if you are already familiar with Japanese and you want to practice, they offer a Japanese and English Conversation group which is like a language exchange; you help those trying to learn English and they help you learn Japanese. I ended up taking the Japanese Basics class which is currently offered twice a week in the evenings and each class is about an hour and a half. The class is offered in three phases and each phase is about a month long, taught by Nanako-san, who gives you a great beginner breakdown of the language. She explains the differences between the character types and their purposes, as well as some of the cultural context.
Finding something like a class to take or an excursion to go on is just as important when you first arrive, as it is if you’ve been here for years. There is always something new to explore and it’s never too late to learn something new!

If you purchase from an individual, the time remaining will vary. One of the first questions you should ask when purchasing a vehicle from an individual is the JCI expiration date. Insurance is also mandatory and should be renewed annually. If you are caught driving without either, your vehicle can/will be impounded.

ou’ve probably heard of Okuma Beach here on Okinawa, but did you know FSS has another military resort detachment? Bellows Air Station, located on Oahu, Hawaii, is the perfect location to get away from stress and relax while still supporting FSS! They provide exceptional recreation, training, and leisure programs through affordable, customer focused services that support the well-being and morale of Department of Defense personnel and their guests. They have a true passion for great customer experiences, while conserving as much of the scenic natural surroundings as possible. The unmatched beauty of the Oahu island is breathtaking, making their goals to “go greener” that much more important. They’ve incorpoated various ways to reduce their environmental footprint such as using recycled paper for all documents printed at the facility and reducing the amounts of laundry loads they wash in one day. These types of changes seem small, but can make the biggest difference in the end! There is something for everyone to enjoy at Bellows. They hold frequent family-friendly activities to participate in such as free movies and popcorn to wind down at night, or free books and board games to borrow. If you’re a thrill and adventure seeker, then head over to Outdoor Recreation where you’ll find water activity rentals and even Paintball! If you’re looking to unwind and recharge, take advantage of calm sandy beaches and the massage services offered to guests. here’s a lot to love about Okuma: stunning beaches, gorgeous blue water, plush beach cottages, sizzling steaks, and gourmet-fired pizzas. I always relish in my trips to the gorgeous Cape Akamakumisaki where Okuma calls home. It’s amazing how each journey brings about a new set of images that will forever remind me of how wondrous Okinawa is. Even the drive up is fantastic. The northern Okinawan landscape offers picturesque and vibrant surroundings unique to the area. It’s easy to lose focus as you glide by the crystalline waters of the East China Sea on your left and as the verdant mountains drift by on your right. The best gets better when you reach Okuma’s doorstep. The resort is neatly tucked away between two sandy beaches on the northern and southern sides of the cape where every day the sun rises over mountains to the East, and sets over the East China Sea in the West. Around Okuma you’ll find stunning cliffs, massive fallen boulders, interesting rock formations, great hiking trails, and well-placed lookouts where you can see Cape Hedo, Izena-jima, Kouri-jima, and the Motobu peninsula. You soon realize how completely surrounded you are by limitless photographic potential. So, go wild! All you need for a fun-filled weekend is located within walking distance on stroller- and bike-friendly paths. The three covered gazebos facing the family campsites are equipped with running water, tables, and large charcoal grills perfect for cooking for a crowd or just your small, but hungry, bunch. Each campsite has its own fire pit and grill. Firewood can be purchased from the Beach Mart at Okuma, along with coal, lighter fluid, hot dogs, and other BBQ items. Each site has a picnic table for your use. If cooking your own food is not your idea of a retreat, the Surfside Grill & Bar offers breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The staff is very accommodating for families and the needs of small children. The kids’ meals are sized appropriately and even come with ice cream for dessert. On Sunday mornings the restaurant offers a breakfast buffet which is sure to satisfy even the pickiest little camper’s hungry appetite. If you have not yet visited this wonderful island getaway, treat your family and book a stay! Head over to kadenafss.com/ okumabeach to learn more.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... continuous process improvement
Written By • Melissa Kowaluk | Photos by • Att Eachus
O
ne of the most valuable skills we are taught in school is how to problem solve by identifying problems and creating creative solutions to find the best outcome. This can be applied to just about anything in life, even down to the simplest everyday tasks. Continuous Process Improvement, or CPI, does just this. It gives all DOD employees the tools to create the most efficient work environment and helps to positively impact critical factors that could be hindering efficiency - such as time, cost, defects, or process variation. The program trains DoD members to leverage Lean Principles and Tools to work through and improve a given issue. This includes using data-driven decision making to identify waste and non-value added process steps. It is quite simple, just apply the time-tested concepts to reach the best outcomes each time. SMSgt Andrea Cogar is the CPI Installation Program Manager. She leads a 1-day Practical Problem Solving Method (PPSM) course and a 2-week long Green Belt (GB) course, where students facilitate teams through the 8-Step method to solve real unit problems. For example, one problem was about time management. A particular unit found it spent too much time getting equipment from A to B and wanted to reduce it by 50%. They solved the problem by using students to facilitate a team through the 8-Step Method. The result is a problem solved and DoD members both CPI trained and postured for GB certification. She also mentors her trainees and certified practitioners outside of the
40 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
academic environment. Senior Cogar is passionate about creating the best possible environments in Air Force units, because if everyone is working at their best, the entire organization benefits. CPI not only produces real outcomes in the end, but also breaks down interpersonal barriers to build stronger and more cohesive teams. Her infectious positive personality only makes this training better. She makes her trainees feel comfortable to speak up, ask questions, and make positive changes. Just this year she has traveled to Misawa AFB and Andersen AFB to deliver the 2-week curriculum and plant the seeds of positive and effective change into the processes there as well. She explained the process can sometimes be regarded as “organized chaos because they attack the problem from all angles to best understand it. The sessions consist of visualizing the different variables through diagrams of sticky notes, each representing different aspects of a problem to solve, as pictured here. In my opinion, this is one of the best ways to learn something new. When you have a trainer or leader who truly believes in the process and is eager to teach, the rest falls into place. Students learn faster and retain more in the end.
The process is a bit like organized chaos, but we have fun doing it! Senior Cogar and the PACAF CPI team identified a problem to solve in the training itself and quickly took steps to correct it. The problem was that the CPI training itself was not encouraging students to put the training to use. Originally, the training was one week long, in which they worked through the curriculum, but the key missing component was the trainees did not feel like they could take the knowledge back to
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV
their units and put it into practice. To correct this, the CPI training was lengthened to two weeks; week one is curriculum, and week two is event facilitation, or in other words, lead the exercise themselves. This is the second best way to learn, by teaching! Through teaching the process themselves, trainees solidify their own understanding of the process and more easily take away new knowledge. The intent is to encourage them to continue to use what they learned for the benefit of their current and future units. The CPI team hopes to recruit new members to come and join in on the fun. The vision for the program is to establish and solidify a pool of instructors and mentors to aid in standardizing the program for team Kadena, to include tenant units. GB courses are filled for FY19; however, the 1-day PPSM course, offered when requested, is an excellent place to begin if you want to empower your teams to make positive and lasting impacts on the organization. Contact SMSgt Andrea Cogar for additional information.
