et’s start with retail. If you are looking for the best way to spoil your fourlegged friend, Karing Kennels retail shop has the cutest merchandise. Seasonal toys, chew toys, puzzles, and activities to help curve boredom, and organic bones to promote healthy teeth can all be found right inside. A fan-favorite item? Birthday party items! Special cake mixes just for animals are sold, in addition to adorable outfits! You can have the Pawty of your pet’s dreams. Speaking of clothing for your pets, the shop also carries costumes for Halloween or most themed holidays. If you are looking to keep your pet healthy, clean, and looking their very best, check out the line of Petology products to keep the fur coats shiny. If your pets need a little more TLC, the Groom Shop in Karing Kennels is also a great option. You can conveniently book your appointment over the phone or via Kadenafss.com/ karingkennels. Services include shampoo, ear cleaning, nail cap applications, and haircuts. The staff will even let you pick from several different scents for a refreshing leave-in conditioner spray, ranging from florals to yummy baked goods! Caitlin Code-Black, Activity Manager for Karing Kennels and Karing Adoption Facility, said her favorite aspect of running the facility are the employees. “I am blessed to work with exceptional employees. I have people who genuinely care about the well-being of the animals, the facilities, and each other.” She also added, “And, of course, getting to see all of the animals is always a perk.”
FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT USAJOBS.GOV
VENTURE 21
Ms. Code-Black went on to discuss one of her favorite things Karing Kennels has to offer that you might not know about. “Karing Kennels offers day boarding, where customers can drop off their pets to board with us for the day. Drop off is 10 am, and pickup is 5:30 pm,” she said. She also shared that animals utilizing the boarding facility can also receive grooming during their stay, including completing their six month quarantine period upon coming to the island.
“Karing
Kennels offers day boarding, where customers can drop off their pets to board with us for the day.” If you are thinking about bringing your dog or kitty to Karing Kennels to groom or board, please make sure they are up to date on their vaccines. “Our facility requires Bordetella, distemper, and rabies for dogs and FVRCP and rabies for cats for all services to ensure our customers’ pets’ safety,” said Caitlin. The process is simple; pet owners can either email the shot records to the facility or bring the hard copy with you when you drop your pet off. Ms. Code-Black also said that they prioritize keeping the facility sanitized and up to health code regulations for your pet’s well-being.
22 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM
If you are reading this and thinking to yourself, “I really wish I had a pet to bring to Karing Kennels!” You are in luck. Karing Adoption Facility might be where your new four-legged family member is waiting to meet you. Karing Adoption Facility’s adoption process consists first of an introduction with the whole family and the animal. This introduction prevents animals from being returned and ensures the entire family is on board with the adoption. Once the family has met the pet and decided to commit to being this animal’s forever home, they put in an application. Karing Adoption Facility staff will review all applications and call by the end of the day. If approved, the family can pick up the animal on the next business day. Then customers will come in the following day, fill out the paperwork, pay, and bring their new pet home. As of right now, it is $100 for the adoption fee and a refundable $100 spay and neuter deposit. Animals must be spayed or neutered within a month (unless under six-months old). If completed within that time frame and the proof is provided, then the deposit will be refunded. This policy incentivizes animal owners to spay or neuter their pets, ensuring the Okinawan stray population remains controlled.

Okinawa Whale Watching Tours By Meagan Abell
F
ebruary - March is a great time to see humpback whales as they migrate to warmer waters to give birth to their calves! The whales travel from Alaskan and Russian waters to Okinawa’s Kerama Islands, which is a 5,600-mile journey. The whales spend the spring and summer months up north fulfilling their appetites for their long journey to warmer waters in the winter. Kadena’s ITT office hosts whale watching tours every weekend during this season. The full-grown mammals can grow to be about 52 feet in length and 36 tons in weight. The creatures can travel up to about 10 mph, and seeing their pectoral fins moving through the water can truly be a majestic sight. Passengers on these tours have even been lucky enough to see a whale make a full breach leap above the water. On a really good day, you may even see a mother with her newborn calf. If you are planning to hop on an ITT tour, be sure you are following your command’s directives and practicing safe social distancing. Some recommended items to bring along are motion sickness meds, waterproof clothing, sunscreen, and don’t forget your camera! For more information, check out the Kadena ITT page on Facebook, or stop by their office located inside the Schilling.

February Seasonal Tours These are rare and unique opportunities only available during the late winter months.
Cherry Blossoms Sakura season is here! Japan is known for its beautiful cherry blossoms, and the season starts here on Okinawa! Come with us as we visit wellknown locations and witness magnificent shades of pink engulf the hillsides. Highlights include Mt. Yaedake, Nakijin Castle and Nago city.
Strawberry Picking Now is the perfect time to harvest delicious, ripe strawberries! Strawberries are in high demand on the island and this is your chance to grab as many as you can during your time at the farm. The season starts early in Okinawa and only lasts a few short months. *Tour is subject to the latest CSD.
Tankan (Tangerine) Picking During the winter months, the tankan season thrives due to the mild winter and subtropical climate, making these small citrus fruits unique to this region of Japan. Travel up north to pick your own “Okinawan tangerines.” The season is almost over!
Whale Watching Humpback whales travel from the northern seas around Russia and Alaska to the shores of Okinawa every February-March. These whales swim 5,600 miles to give birth to their calves in the warm waters surrounding Okinawa-honto and the Kerama Islands. We take you out to sea to try to get you as close as possible to these gentle giants. Tours every weekend!
These seasonal tours are going on now! Contact ITT directly for more information. Don’t forget to check our social media pages for updates and deals!

KADENA MARINA Citizen Scientist Whale Watching All Whale Watching Season Did you know that each whale’s fluke, or tail, is as distinctive as a fingerprint? Join the Marina team on the Venture boat as we celebrate the return of our beloved humpback whales and help document their migration as good stewards of the ocean. Bring your cameras and get those fluke pics! Your pictures may help scientists better understand the humpbacks’ population density, migratory habits, and breeding habit. Lunar New Year Night Dive Friday, 12 February • $25 per person Descend into the depths under the darkness of the New Moon and experience the ocean at night on a fluorescent dive. Join the Marina team as we host a night dive where participants will use UV and red-light flashlights that illuminate coral and marine life in brilliant, glowing colors. Many of your favorite creatures are less affected by red light, allowing you to observe them in a more natural environment. Sweetheart Deal - Jet Ski Safety Class 12 - 15 February Are you always looking for a chance to hold your sweetheart close? Come down to the Marina to sign up for our Jet Ski Safety Class! Your Valentine will receive 50% off their registration after you register. After completing the course, you will both be able to rent our fabulous jet skis. There’s no better way to celebrate your love for one another than by zooming across the crystal blue waters together! Flashlight Sale 1 - 28 February February means Lantern Festivals in Okinawa, and because “one is none,” we want to help you think “Safety First” by lighting up your night dives with your own new and improved dive light! This February, when you come into the Marina and buy your primary flashlight, you get 10% off your secondary light. I Whaley Love You Sunday, 14 February • $110 per couple Hold your loved one tight as you listen for the Whale Song on Valentine’s Day! Join us on the Venture boat as we watch the majestic whales migrate through the beautiful waters of Okinawa. Rejoice in the splendor of nature as the whales surface, fluke slap, or even breach. And the best part? You get to share the experience with your special someone! ReActivate Did you get certified in the past but haven’t gone diving since? The ReActivate program is the perfect way to refresh your dive skills, regain your confidence, and update what you learned in the PADI Open Water Diver Course. It’s time to jump back in!
