CHERRY Sa k u ra

BLOSSOM Article by Carolyn Osorio Design by Takako Uehara

D

id you know that Okinawa’s Cherry Blossom Season is different than any other place in the world? Okinawa’s sub-tropical climate, and generally warmer weather, means that the island experiences blooms beginning as early as mid-January. The blooms represent beauty, a time of renewal, and because the blooms only last about two weeks, they are also symbolic of the fleeting nature of life. “Hanami,” or “watching blossoms,” is an extremely popular activity throughout Japan after experiencing the season, and it’s easy to see why! The practice of “hanami” is thought to have started during the Nara period between 710–794 CE. Inspired by the Chinese Tang Dynasty, members of high society would gather under blooming ume trees to admire the blossoms and celebrate Spring. “Ume,” or plum blossoms, are Chinese trees that produce a fruit similar to plums and have a much longer bloom time than cherry trees (almost two months). Over the years, “hanami” shifted to Japanese cherry blossoms, known as “sakura,” and the celebrations grew to include people from all classes of society. “Sakura” are a significant part of Japanese culture and tradition and can be found in art, songs, anime, and even within the Japanese military. The concept of “hanami” is now synonymous with “sakura,” and the tradition has continued for more than a thousand years, with people throughout Japan still filling parks every Spring to have picnics beneath the blooming blossoms. Many Americans might be familiar with the cherry blossoms in Washington D.C. and the annual National Cherry Blossom Festival that happens every spring. The Festival serves as America’s version of “hanami,” complete with performances, classes, and more. What you might not know is that those beautiful trees that line the grounds of the National Mall in D.C. were actually a gift from Japan in 1912 to commemorate the two nations’ growing friendship. One of the things that makes Okinawa’s cherry blossom season so unique are the types of cherry trees on the island and the flowers they produce. While mainland Japan’s cherry blossoms are typically pale pink to almost white, with delicate petals that fall individually, Okinawa’s

cherry blossoms are dark pink, bell-like flowers that fall intact, as whole flowers. This is because there are two predominant cherry tree varieties here in Okinawa: the Ryukyu kanhizakura and the Taiwanese cherry. These trees produce flowers in much darker, richer shades of pink than the classic Yoshino cherry trees of mainland Japan and Washington D.C. The dates for the official cherry blossom season change from year to year depending on rainfall and seasonal temperatures. This year, Tokyo is expecting the season to begin on 15 March, giving us here in Okinawa extended opportunities to experience the cherry blossom season. The further North you’re willing to travel, the later the season happens. For example, this year, the peak bloom in Sapporo is forecasted to arrive in late April. Cherry blossoms typically bloom for about a week, with peak or full bloom usually occurring anywhere from a few days to over a week after the initial blooms are spotted. With that being said, if you miss the “peak bloom” date, don’t be discouraged. Most trees will keep their blooms for about a two-week window. Catch the Okinawan cherry blossom blooms through midFebruary. And if you just can’t get enough and want to plan a trip to catch the perfect peak blooms in mainland Japan, keep an eye on Japan Meteorological Corporation’s official cherry blossom forecast for 2022.

Road to Mt.

Fuji

Is climbing Mt. Fuji on your bucket list? Then join us this summer for our annual trip! How difficult is the climb? The average daily temperature on the summit is 40°F(4°C) in mid-summer. However, the mornings and nighttime can be extremely cold so hikers must make sure to wear warm clothing. If you select a single-day trip, you will climb 1,471 meters in elevation over the course of about 5 hours. The high altitude change can cause people to suffer from Altitude Sickness due to the decrease in oxygen. Symptoms can include headache, decreased appetite, fatigue, shortness of breath, dizziness, and nausea. To avoid this, we recommend that hikers climb at a slow and steady pace, take frequent breaks, drink plenty of fluids, eat high calorie foods, and avoid alcohol and tobacco. If you continue to experience these symptoms, hikers must begin their descent.
