New year, new blooms!

January in Okinawa is the beginning of mid-winter’s canvas of petals. Get excited as we welcome the season’s sweet embrace with cherry blossoms in full bloom only here in our little paradise! Witness as cherry blossoms paint the island pink in this month’s Cherry Blossom Festivals. You can visit several locations to step into and experience the enchanting world of pink paradise, the tropical island vibe. Cherry blossoms or “Sakura” bloom the earliest in Okinawa, making it more exceptional and unique. In addition, Okinawa flourishes a particular variety of Sakura called “Hikanzakura” or “Ryukyu kanhizakura,” giving you a more

reason to visit and experience its oneof-a-kind beauty.

These florets are different from mainland Japan from its appearance to how they conclude blooming. Okinawa’s sakura appear darker than the rest of Japan and fall to the ground intact instead for petals falling one at a time. Enjoy the delicate and enchanting blooms from north to south between mid-January to midFebruary. Locals and tourists alike chase Sakura throughout their blooming season with fairytale-like views as you walk through a path of pink-hued trees at each enchanting location. Good news! Okinawa has not

just one but five annual Cherry Blossom Festivals you can revel in. Get lost in the mythical atmosphere with local cuisines, local traditional performances, and great company. Get the best of both worlds in Nakijin Castle Ruins and behold as the darker-than-usual pink blossoms fill the trees of such a historically significant location. Feel the magic within the ruins as you stroll beneath and get an up-close look of the everdainty cluster.

Yaedake Sakurano-Mori Park is yet another location that will transport you to a realm of pure magic during their Motobu Yaedake Cherry Blossom Festival. Taking a hike for the perfect panoramic view of pink hues and the ocean will leave you

speechless as you step into nature’s picture-perfect creation.

Another location can be found up north at Nago Central Park where the Nago Cherry Blossom Festival is celebrated. Be surrounded by hundreds and thousands of Sakura as you climb your way up the stairs for a dream-like view at the end. Worry not, Sakura blooms later in the southern part of the island. In midFebruary, you can witness two more festivals held at Yaese Park and Yogi Park. Ascend the stairs lit by numerous lanterns leading to the top observation deck in Yaese Park. Hence, the blooms are best viewed during the night during the Yaese Cherry Blossom Festival.

One of the most popular festivals is the Naha Cherry Blossom Festival held at Yogi Park. Witness the cherry trees surround the river, take a peaceful stroll, and feel the magic of the pink blooms. These festivals not only allow you to enjoy the blooms, but also offer a chance to savor local delicacies and witness traditional and local performances. Some even practice “Hanami” or flower viewing, so bring your picnic baskets and enjoy quality time with family and friends beneath the cherry trees. Join us as we get lost in the Sakura beauty, enjoying the relaxing ambience of each of the festivals. Can’t wait to see and hear about all the fun you’ll be having during this season!
