The new menu items at Seaside are a well-curate combination of comfort foods and a modern upgrade to some classic favorites. From the simplest to the most complex of palates, everything is delicious and there’s something for everyone! Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Out with the old and in with the new! As often as possible, FSS takes the opportunity to renovate or update facilities around base. A few years back, Chili’s got a complete renovation and just last year, Chili’s Delivery began, and the Rocker Enlisted Club was completed. These large-scale projects take time, skill, and dedication on the part of many different organizations to succeed and we are thankful to those who work so hard to make it happen. This year, we will continue to see changes throughout FSS such as Jack’s Place and Seaside. Here are some of the changes you can expect to see! Beginning at Jack’s Place, the interior of the facility will be modernized. With all new flooring, new upscale décor, it will be the perfect date night location. The Teppanyaki room will receive a Japanese style redesign, with Bingata wall hangings and soft neutral colors. The biggest change will come with a new updated menu including Coq au Vin, Scallops Mornay, Rack of Lamb and many other delicious and decadent options. As always, the outdoor and rooftop spaces are available for reservations and parties. The sunset view from the rooftop is fanstastic! The lounge downstairs is perfect for parties or squadron gatherings. We are excited to see what changes will bring to Jack’s Place!

most beautiful locations, it will mirror the beauty of the beach and turquoise waters by following a breezy beachy vibe. It will move from Italian favorites by taking advantage of the fresh local seafood available and adding items like Crab Cake Burger, Seafood Mac & Cheese, Shrimp Burger as well as a tasty daily specials. The new food is a hit! Take it from Major Hill who attended an early tasting of the menu items. “The new menu items at Seaside are a well-curated combination of comfort foods and a modern upgrade to some classic favorites. From the simplest to the most complex of palates, everything is delicious and there’s something for everyone!” On the weekends at night, live performances will grace the new stage with an updated outdoor lounge, pergola, and décor. By taking advantage of the wonderful outdoor space available and great year-round weather, Seaside will have an easy-going, family friendly vibe. Be on the lookout for opening dates and treat your sweetheart or your family to a night out!

With new changes, comes a new name! Seaside Ristorante will now be referred to as ‘Seaside.’ With an all-new menu and updated modern furnishings, Seaside will be the perfect place to bring your family to enjoy a delicious surf and turf meal. With one of the

Take Flight... W

e see the planes soaring the skies above us almost every day. Some of those flying the skies of Okinawa are from the Kadena Aero Club. Recently, they received their new shipment of Cesna RedHawk planes, which are being assembled for optimum safety. This new fleet of planes marks an exciting time for those planning to get flight certified.

I spoke with Scott Mase, the manager and one of the pilots at the Aero Club, about the new planes. The Cesna RedHawks are not only more visually appealing, with their red streak down the side and new plane smell, they are created to be safer as well. Mr. Mase explained one of the main new components of the plane’s added safety is the ADS-B avionics component of the cockpit. This transponder system broadcasts and receives air traffic information, giving the pilot full situational awareness of nearby planes. Since Okinawa’s airspace is quite congested, it’s an added safety measure that allows the pilot to navigate with full confidence. By going out to the planes and comparing the differences between the two, there’s no question the RedHawks are like a shiny new toy for the pilots of the Aero Club. They look like a brand new commercial airline with embroidered leather seats, covered ceilings, and large windows. They’re the real deal! Since they are “teaching” planes, the outside hull is covered with indicators that name the different parts of the plane - propeller, engine, wings, and so on. “These are meant for beginner pilots, so they can learn every single part of the plane easily,” said Mr. Mase. They even provide a little tonguein-cheek humor for the new students by saying things like “If you can see this part of me, it means I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.” Mr. Mase and the Aero Club would like to thank Col Eddy and his leadership team for his tremendous help in getting these new planes. While the old planes are well-loved and have served pilots and customers well over the past four decades, it is exciting to see such beautiful planes on the horizon!

We are fortunate to have an Aero Club on our base, so take advantage of it! Book a Tour Flight and see a whole new perspective of this beautiful island. Being up in the skies over the turquoise waters around Okinawa will surely be one of the highlights of your time here.

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... 18th aerospace Ground equipment

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk | Photos by • Att Eachus

The 18th Aerospace Ground Equipment Flight within the 18th Equipment Maintenance Squadron serves as a backbone to all the aircraft missions on base. Without the diligent teams of people who work day and night to keep the correct equipment ready, the missions of other squadrons would not be successful. We spoke with T(S)gt Select Jessica Tolar and TSgt Anthony Brumfield to learn more about the work the Southside AGE team does. T(S)gt Tolar is the Inspections NCOIC of the Southside AGE Flight and is instrumental in its success. They ready ground equipment to support the planes, more specifically the F-15s, TA and the 733rd AMC. She is responsible for catching preventative issues with the equipment before it gets handed off to those working directly on the aircraft. T(S)gt Tolar inspects the equipment ready for use with a goal of ten inspections per day. Once the inspections are complete, the team focuses their unequivocal efforts to maintenance on the remaining equipment. T(S)gt Tolar explained why she enjoys coming to work each day. “Teaching others and 38 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

learning things while I teach others. Developing airmen usually also leads to development in yourself.” The leadership mentality T(S)gt Tolar possesses is paramount to instructing a successful team. TSgt Brumfield oversees both the Inspection and Maintenance processes for 373 units throughout the day and redirects work focus to avoid dropping below Mission Essential Limits (MEL) for available equipment to the flightline, while ensuring safety. The Southside AGE Flight provides equipment such as generators, hydraulic test stands, air conditioners, and more. Since they operate on a preventative basis rather than a reactionary one, the AGE Flight has to think ahead and prepare enough components in case something is needed right away. The Southside AGE team is made up

Teaching others and learning things while I teach others. Developing airmen usually also leads to development in yourself. of approximately 42 people who work together throughout their 24-hour shift. The team has built a great tight-knit bond through the long hours, which is reflected in their ability to quickly train new members and get the required work done. AGE crews are quick thinkers and must be ready to learn something new each day. They are jack-of-all-trades who are capable of getting the nittygritty work done. One of the best ways to get tasks accomplished is by being surrounded with good morale and camaraderie. Their workspace reflects this because in the hangar where they work all day I saw everyone working together, having fun, and helping each other with any issues that arose.

There’s nothing wrong with a good old-fashioned rivalry such as the one within AGE. The Southside AGE’s crew motto is “Southside is the only side!” poking fun at the Northside AGE Flight whose motto is “Northside is the strong side!” The leaders of the AGE Flight understand the importance of good morale and therefore provide opportunities for the service members to have some down time and enjoy group cookouts, potlucks, and outings like paintball. They help put together the POW 5K and help with the electrical work for events such as Tinsel Town and other large events on base. Their reach goes far beyond their hangar and all members of the base have felt the impact they have on Kadena.

The Southside AGE team works hard, and they have fun doing it. These two discernible factors in turn create unmatchable results.

T(S)gt Tolar’s most recent accomplishment is passing the Technical Sergeant test and is excited for her new leadership role. She would like to give a shout-out to her daughter Kaleigh and TSgt Brumfield would like to give a shout-out to his wife Autumn. Thank you to all families who are there to guide and encourage those who are helping keep everyone safe!
