Measure Twice, Cut Once PHOTOS & TEXT • JENY BUECHEL
T
hey say that if something scares you, there’s a good chance that you should give it a try. I’m not exactly sure who “they” are, but I’m curious what they would have to say about a table saw. Walking in to the woodshop at Kadena Arts & Crafts, I was initially overwhelmed by all of the different machines. In my mind, wood working was a hand saw or whittling kind of thing. However, after my woodshop orientation, I learned that there were more types of saws than you can shake a stick at. Band saws, table saws, push saws, pull saws, see saws… the list is a long one. One thing they all have in common though is that when used incorrectly, they can hurt you. And that, my friends, is why I am frightened by the table saw. However, once I took the orientation course, I learned the safe practices to use all of the saws and routers in the shop. I also saw some of the gorgeous work that patrons of the shop are working on, and their completed projects waiting on a final coat of varnish. I knew immediately that I wanted to create something special, too. When the jewelry box class came up, I took the leap and signed up for it. Armed only with my safety orientation, I decided to give it a shot. On the first day of class, myself and the other five members of the class joined our instructor, Tom, in the shop after open shop hours. Tom reiterated the safety procedures for the equipment, and then we got to work. We measured a completed jewelry box for dimensions and did some math to calculate the amount of wood we each needed to create our own box.
We started off slow, making the initial cuts to form the shell of the box. When cutting the dados (the diagonally cut pieces to form corners) Tom repeatedly said to measure twice, and cut once. Cut the biggest pieces first, so if you mess up, you can cut the smaller pieces from the larger pieces. I didn’t know how valuable this advice was going to be until I managed to invert my dado angles three times in a row. Rookie mistake! After five sessions of measuring, cutting, gluing, hoping and praying, my jewelry box came together. We picked glass for the top of the box, making each one unique. We also picked felt to line the bases and even added splines! Splines are the accents in the corners of the box that strengthen and decorate the joined pieces, in case you didn’t know. At the conclusion of the class, each one of us had a beautiful handcrafted jewelry box. All of us had doubt at some point during the process, but everyone was successful. My jewelry box made a fabulous gift for Mother’s Day that put my brother’s gift of a bouquet of flowers to shame. Sorry, brother. I win. The entire experience was empowering. I got over my fear of the table saw, though I am still intimidated. I created something beautiful and learned many skills that I never knew I needed. The classes don’t stop at jewelry boxes either! You can make a step stool, corn hole boards or even a whole living room set. Once you have your shop certification card, the world is your oyster.

SEASON OF
S akura PHOTOS • RYAN BURGER | TEXT • RACHEL KUHN
I remember the air was cool. It almost always is during January in Okinawa and we were fortunate enough to go out in search of cherry blossoms on a sunny day. The drive up to Nago is beautiful. If you’ve ever been up that way for the Churaumi Aquarium or made the long (by Oki standards) trip to Okuma, you know what I mean. The coastal views along Route 58 are absolutely gorgeous and make the, sometimes traffic laden, trip worth the slow pace. If you’ve lived on Okinawa for longer than one cherry blossom season, you also know that you start to see the blooms popping up everywhere during January. Even here on Kadena we have some beautiful cherry blossom trees. However, nothing quite compares to the cherry blossom tree-lined streets and mountainsides that you’ll see in Nago and Northern Okinawa. It seems as though, of any flower or greenery, cherry blossoms epitomize Japanese design and décor. You see them all over the place in pottery, glassware, bingata, jewelry and fabric. Cherry blossoms are to Japan what the Eiffel Tower is to France – they’re about as iconic as it gets and with good reason. There’s something about the stark contrast of the bright pink blossoms with their crisp blue sky backdrop that eliminates any wonder why locals and tourists alike flock to see these flourishes paint the island pink. Add in a Japanese White Eye, or Mejiro, and you’ve got the makings of a framable photograph…or at least one that’s fridge-worthy. These tiny yellow birds are well-known across Okinawa and are an added bonus of cherry blossom viewing. They’re not ones to sit still for long except when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Aside from their natural beauty, the cherry blossoms, or sakura, have a deep history in Japan that doesn’t revolve around tourism. Long ago, the cherry blossoms were used to predict harvest seasons and they became a symbol of hope and renewal – ideals which farmers and their families must not be lacking. The blooms are a sign of spring, giving even more hope that the cold will come to an end with the promise of warmer days ahead. Now, we know in Okinawa it doesn’t get that cold, but it gets cold enough to prompt these buds to open. Spring brings with it new life in many ways, and the cherry blossoms are no different. In Japan, the blooms also symbolize human life and its brevity. Since the sakura are only in bloom for about a week in any given region, many people in Japan host flower viewing parties, also called hanami, as a way to celebrate the blossoms and what they represent. Though blooms and weather can be unpredictable at times, some of the best places to see cherry blossoms on Okinawa are Nago, Mt. Yae and Nakijin Castle. Each offers a different experience of flower viewing. The Nago Cherry Blossom Festival has vendors, live entertainment, and food. Whereas Mt. Yae and Nakijin Castle offer a bit more of a quiet environment for cherry blossom viewing. Cherry blossoms are only in bloom once a year on Okinawa, and if you can imagine, this already beautiful island becomes even more vibrant and alive with the bright pink blooms of the sakura. 18 WWW.KADENAFSS.COM

My hometown, New York City, isn’t landlocked but water sports and activities aren’t a usual occurrence for the people living there. I hadn’t actually participated in water activities until I moved to Okinawa. Here, you have so many opportunities because of places like Kadena Marina. They offer a variety of cool and unique water activities like surfing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking and now, sailing. Sailing isn’t a new program to Kadena Marina. Many people don’t know but Kadena Harbor is an American Sailing Association certified teaching school, they have just been without an instructor for the past three years. Now, however, they have an instructor, Karl Kuehner, who is ready and excited to share his knowledge with anyone who wants to learn to sail. Karl has been sailing practically all his life and it all started at six years old as he sailed with his father. He has been a sailing instructor for 35 years and his passion for sailing is evident whenever he is answering the questions of someone who wants to learn. As someone who knows nothing about sailing, it was fun asking him questions about how the boat works and how to do basic things because he was ready to answer without skipping a beat. He explained everything thoroughly and helped me understand with ease. I also got the opportunity to watch him sail and maneuver the “Wind Charmer,” one of the sailboats at the Kadena Marina, like it was second nature. That was what convinced me to sign up for sailing lessons. The sailing program is available for any level of experience for people 16 years and older. It’s a basics class. If you have no experience, these lessons will teach you all you need to know to sail the seas. The lessons are broken down into about three classroom instruction sessions and three hands-on sailing sessions. There is a cap at four people per class but if there are just two people interested, Karl is willing to teach. The length of the class can change depending on how many people are participating in the class. The classes will teach you basic sail handling, navigational rules, boating safety and how to manage emergency situations. After you finish the lessons, you will have the ability to rent a boat from the Kadena Harbor to sail around the area. You will also earn an international license through the American Sailing Association. Once you learn from Karl and get your international license, you are free to sail anywhere in the world that has a harbor and boats for rent! This is convenient for our community with many military members and their families moving frequently; taking these lessons will give you the opportunity to sail wherever the military takes you! Whether you are a beginner with no knowledge of the seas, like me, or you want to brush up and renew your ASA sailing license, these lessons are perfect for you. Kadena Marina will be offering these classes year-round. Time on Okinawa goes by fast, so head down to Kadena Marina to schedule your classes today!
