f you have been waiting for the chance to start checking off the must-see places on this beautiful island, we have a list to help you! Our Marketing team has compiled a list of ten of our favorite spots on the island. Also, remember, Kadena ITT and Outdoor Recreation are excellent resources when going on adventures. Be sure to take advantage of any tours or trips they are planning!

1. Shuri Castle

We know what you are thinking! “Isn’t Shuri Castle closed for repairs right now?” Well, yes, it is undergoing repairs after the fire in 2019. However, there is still plenty to learn and see with its rich history and beautiful garden. Stop by ITT for more information!

2. Sacred Places

Okinawa is overflowing with sacred prayer sites and religious culture. If you would like to embrace this culture, you will want to hop on a tour with ITT to a handful of beautiful and peaceful religious landmarks.

3. Bios on the Hill

Located near Onna Village, Bios on the Hill is a beautiful nature park. Perfect for families or a day date, you can experience butterflies, small farm animals, and plenty of local favorite and exotic plants. For a small fee, you can even take a boat ride through the park. Bios on the Hill is a day trip you won’t want to miss!

4. Kokusai Street

Located in Naha, Kokusai Street is the keeper of so many fun things! If you are looking for shops that carry all your favorite Okinawan treats, art, fantastic street food, and local fare, a trip to Kokusai Street is exactly what you need. Be sure to practice social distancing and follow your commands’ directives, but it is easy to enjoy this area even if only from the outside!

5. Kouri Island

Covered in soft white sands and beautiful views, this treasure is a definite must-stop. Located just north of Nago and accessible by car, it won’t take long to see all of its charms. With cafes, food trucks, and historical sights, it is often called “The Island of Love.” It even has famous heart-shape rocks right off the coast!

6. Muraski Mura

A perfect activity to let out your creative side! Muraski Mura is an interactive theme park that offers crafting like painting ceramic Shisa Dogs or a decorative Torii sign. In addition to observing glass blowing, the annual lantern festival is celebrated until March 2021! Be sure to add this to your list of must-experience locations. You can even bring back a souvenir to keep for a lifetime. 18 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

7. Botanical Gardens

Just 10 minutes outside of Kadena Gate 3, you could easily walk around the park for hours! Adorned with beautiful blooms, birds, and did we mention the Christmas lights? I know what you are thinking, “but it is January?”… Yes, it is, in fact, January, but they leave their Holiday Illuminations up until May! If holiday crowds aren’t your thing, catch them anytime this winter or spring.

8. Valley of Gangala

A cave of limestone created hundreds of years ago has become a popular tourist spot. Known for its spiritual properties and beautiful forest, you can walk around and completely forget where you are. Valley of Gangala is home to banyan trees as well, known to Okinawans to host spirits. It is a beautiful view and an excellent stop for a group! They even have a small café adjoined to a cave.

9. Sesoko Island

Accessible by a bridge and home to secret beaches and charming cafés, add this to your off-season must-see list! Late April is the ideal time to go to enjoy the warm water and beat the crowds. Many will rent bicycles, ride around to see the sights, or sit by the emerald green waters and enjoy some peace. Indeed a hidden gem, be sure to enjoy the white sandy beaches and local fare!

10. Okinawa Wings

ar, ures!

Okay, this isn’t exactly a “bucket list” place, but it is a great way to see more of this beautiful rock where we live. All over the island, cafes, shops, and buildings have beautiful and ornate wings painted on the side. It is an adventure in itself to try and track them all down. Plenty of residents spend their weekends getting lost looking for these artistic wonders. Start your search for Okinawa Wings now! Be sure to take a picture and tag @KadenaFSS on Instagram, and use the hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial! We want to see where you found them! If off base adventures are not always possible, you can always find a great hobby or activity right here at Kadena! You can work on that bowling form and shoot for a perfect game at Emery Lanes. Learn to work on your car or change your oil at Auto Hobby, or head over to the wood shop and create a perfect piece of furniture at Arts & Crafts. Our FSS Team genuinely hopes you can spend your 2021 with adventures and new experiences. These are just a few of the places we have loved, and we hope you do too! As always, be safe and practice safe social distancing. Happy New Year!

Seawall Project By Meagan Abell

O

kuma is the perfect little oasis located 51 miles north of Kadena Air Base. If you have not added this stop to your adventures in Okinawa, make it a priority! It is right on the beautiful beaches and has outdoor activities available like mini golf. However, big changes are on the horizon for Okuma as they embark on the seawall restoration project. Master Sergeant Adam Haffner shared with us that this project is a coordinated effort between United States Forces Japan and the Government of Japan. The two groups are working with environmentalists with the goal to protect and extend the life of the 135-acre landmark. The seawall is a favorite location for outdoor activities like running and biking as well as a great launching point for water adventures. MSgt. Haffner went on to explain that this $4.2 million project will repair 12 sites and over 4,000 feet of shoreline. The project is predicted to be completed by March 2022, and the contractors are in the initial phases of setup. Local ofďŹ cials from the Kunigami Board of Education are monitoring all the work to ensure the preservation of any cultural assets in the area. Okuma is very excited to get the project underway. We are excited to feature Risner this month because we have recently had the addition of the new Habu Fitness Center. Habu, which had its grand opening this past October, has added exercise equipment and space to provide a much-needed overflow space to relieve crowding at Risner. Also, Habu is located close to Gate Two and provides a centrally located area for those looking to work out a little closer to their house. Habu Fitness Center currently operates with an open gym and weight and cardio rooms, but it is already looking toward Phase II of renovation! “During phase II, Habu will have both men’s and women’s locker rooms. We will also install 24/7 fitness access once the ROM restrictions are lifted,” said Mr. Dwayne Reed, Director of Risner Fitness & Sports Complex. Mr. Reed went on to explain that the equipment in the new fitness center not only looks nice but is commercial grade. Teamed up with Life Fitness, the equipment is anticipated to last for years to come. If you have not had the opportunity to stop by the new center, make it a priority in the new year to see what Kadena FSS is doing to bring it together.

While the new fitness center is a great and much-needed addition, the Risner Fitness and Sports Complex is still your number one stop if you are looking to get into exercise classes. A vast assortment of classes are offered, from yoga to spin to several different types of boot camps, as well as courses designed to pass PT tests. The best part is that they are all free! “I personally love our group exercise classes. It’s nice as the director to be able to offer the Kadena community free group exercise classes with certified-trained instructors,” said Mr. Reed.

“ It’s nice as the director to be able to offer the Kadena community free group exercise classes with certified-trained instructors. ” The complex also includes an outdoor track, tennis courts, and the 4 Diamonds baseball fields. COVID-19 restrictions have played a factor in all the activities these areas can facilitate, but they are being maintained and ready for Team Kadena when it is right. If you have noticed construction in the room right in front of Risner, you are not the only one! Mr. Reed explained that the area is the new home to additional office and fitness space to house the Air Force PT program. The estimated completion date is 21 May. One of the best parts of Risner is the in-house juice bar! Risn’ Shine, located directly through the front doors, offers various smoothies and shakes, protein powders, fruit, and light food items for the perfect after-workout snack. Risn’ Shine also features a monthly shake special with fun and seasonal flavors like Eggnog, New Year Resolution, or Red Honey Protein! In the new year, Mr. Reed and his second in command, Technical Sergeant Paul Pujol, are hoping to bring back the big events that can inspire Team Kadena to get moving. Events they are looking forward to hosting again are Zumbathon, a cardio longevity event featuring dancing to Reggaeton and other music with a fun beat; and Aerobathon, an aerobics competition; as well as the Squat Challenge and various 5Ks, like a Halloween race, Turkey Trot, Jingle Bell trot, or even some new ones!

When talking to Mr. Reed about fitness, he told us that his favorite sport is racquetball. He picked up the activity while active duty and found it’s a great source of cardio and competition. “Not only is it fun, but it is also cardio!” Mr. Reed advised that anyone wanting to re-enter the fitness world, start a new hobby of fitness, or try different areas of working out to take it slow to avoid injury. He expressed again that group fitness classes are also a great way to get started for accountability, and the classes are free!
