IT’S TIME TO PAINT THE TOWN RED, WHITE, AND BLUE!

Let’s light up the sky and ignite the spirit of freedom this Fourth of July. Despite being away from home, your Kadena FSS team promises a night lled with sizzling barbecue, epic live entertainment, and an explosive and colorful rework display. So, put on your party hats and get ready to embark on a star-spangled adventure with all things American.

Before we dive into all the festivities, let’s take a moment to remember how it all started. Fourth of July, July 4th, or Independence Day started in 1776 when the Continental Congress passed the Declaration of Independence, a historical document drafted by Thomas Je erson, the third President of the United States.

Since that pivotal moment, this day has been celebrated with pride and joy by many. Festivities consisted of bon res, cannon rings, parades, and a public recitation of the Declaration of Independence.

Did you know?

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania was the rst city to observe this day following its adoption with the very rst Fourth of July reworks illuminating the Philadelphia sky in 1777.

Traditions evolved over the years; and in 1781, Massachusetts became the rst state to o cially recognize this day as a state holiday.

However, it wasn’t until after the War of 1812 when the patriotic tradition became more popular. The U.S. Congress then appointed this day as a federal holiday in 1870.

Let’s get into the festivities! When one thinks of Fourth of July, an ultimate American tradition comes to mind: reworks. It simply wouldn’t be an Independence Day celebration without the dazzling and mesmerizing colors luminating the sky.

Fun fact: although reworks came in the picture in 1777, its origin traces back to 2,000 years ago, invented during China’s Han Dynasty.

Now let’s move on to food. Food is an essential part of any celebration, and one staple that has become an integral part of the American culture is barbecue. Did you know? The word “barbecue” derives from the Spanish “barbacoa” referring to wooden rack for smoking meats.

Massive barbecues were held during the 19th century to gather crowds in celebrating freedom and unity together. This practice has since become a tradition for many when celebrating Fourth of July.

Expressions of patriotism through music has also gained popularity over the years. The holiday’s in uence on contemporary culture is evident in artists who draw inspiration from this day to capture the spirit of American identity, making it relatable to people from all walks of life.

It’s a beautiful night, and you’re looking for something fun to do. Fourth of July is around the corner so make sure to hang up your ags, mark your calendars, and prepare for the biggest Freedom Festival & Fireworks ever!

Lest we forget, it is a time to unite as one and celebrate the birth of American independence and freedom.

HAPPY FOURTH OF JULY!

A Cultural Blend: American In uence in Okinawa

There are plenty of reasons why many consider Okinawa a very special place. If you’ve toured Japan, you’ll notice the distinctiveness the island holds. It’s no secret that Okinawa shares a deep and rich history with the United States, comprising 32 U.S. military bases within the island, which signi cantly contributes to the prevalence of American cultural in uences.

Following this shared history between the two nations, American culture has made a lasting impression on the island that symbolizes their strong and evident bond. Notice the many elements around the island as they awaken a sense of familiarity and a close reminder of home.

SPAM

In case you didn’t know, SPAM was distributed all over Okinawa and became part of the local Okinawan diet during the aftermath of the war. The processed caned pork and ham were a part of a campaign given out by U.S. military bases to help aid the economic hardship many faced during the post-war era.

A&W

Established in 1963, A&W provided a comforting reminder of home for U.S. military members stationed in Okinawa. With the absence of fast-food restaurants, A&W quickly gained overwhelming popularity achieving remarkable success when it opened near Kadena Air Base. It remains a must-visit destination for both locals and visitors from mainland Japan to this day.

CENTER

Plaza House Shopping Center is the very rst multi-cultured shopping center introduced in Japan. Originating in 1954 during the post-war era, the Americanstyled center was built primarily for U.S. military commanders, o cers, leaders, and their families stationed at the U.S. Ryukyu Command Headquarters then. It o ered a diverse array of shops and restaurants, providing families with opportunities to shop and savor each other’s company.

BLUE SEAL

One of the spots where people seek a breather from the hot and humid Okinawa weather. Did you know that the rst-ever Blue Seal factory opened in 1948 on a U.S. military base? The retro-American dinerstyle ice cream lounge was established to boost people’s morale and provide a comforting taste of home. Okinawan avors such as Beni-imo (purple potato), Shiiquasa (Okinawan lime) Sherbet, and Okinawan Salt Cookies were later introduced after transitioning to local ownership.

PLAZA HOUSE SHOPPING

Taco Rice is a perfect representation of two di erent cultures coming together and coexisting. This dish was rst established outside of Camp Hansen, a U.S. Marine Corps base, back in 1984 by Matsuzo Gibo. It combines Japanese white rice with seasoned ground pork and beef, lettuce, tomato slices, and shredded cheese that make a delicious and convenient meal. It has become an Okinawan staple cuisine sought by tourists.

JIMMY’S

Jimmy’s started as a humble grocery store with a goal to provide and introduce the American food culture on the island with essential American goods. Overtime, the small supermarket exponentially grew, expanding to eight additional stores plus a restaurant. Today, Jimmy’s o ers a more diverse array of products including freshly baked goods, various foods, and much more.

AMERICAN VILLAGE

A shopping center that opened in 1981 primarily for the U.S. military members stationed on the island, but later opened to the public in 1984. The vast open air, the breathtaking views of the ocean, an array of food options, di erent types of recreational activities, and several shopping areas make American Village the perfect destination for visitors to explore a rich cultural experience.

It’s no secret that Okinawa and the United States share a rich history together. The two nations’ enduring bond has laid a strong foundation, making their relationship ourish to what it is today. As you venture out on the island, take a moment to observe these subtle reminders that evoke a sense of home while being thousands and thousands miles away.
