Summertime is a season that is most-closely associated with fishing. Warm water, sunshine, and quiet makes for the perfect conditions to enjoy the sport - all of which you can find at Okuma. Ken-san, who has been working at Okuma for 20 years, loves fishing there. He has been fishing for almost his entire life and still really enjoys going out into the water. For him, it is more about taking the time to connect to nature and appreciate the beautiful surroundings than it is about having a large catch. If you follow his tips, you’ll be just as good! Always be safe and wear a life vest, sun protection, and bring enough bait! He explained you don’t need to be a professional - anyone can pick up the hobby and safely enjoy the relaxing atmosphere at Okuma Beach. Some may think that it is prohibited to fish - but if you follow the rules to stay safe, you’re in the clear. To learn more about fishing the seas at Okuma Beach, check out Ken-san’s video on the Kadena FSS Facebook page or YouTube channel!

It takes a long time [to prepare], so it’s satisfying to see it through to the end Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn Have you ever attended Rockin’ the Block, Tinsel Town, or any of the other concerts the Schilling Community Center puts on? If so, you have benefitted from Mr. Hisashi Shimabukuro’s hard work. Mr. Shimabukuro, or Shima-san, is the Programs Specialist for Schilling and is responsible for a large portion of the backstage work that goes into putting large concerts together. He is from Okinawa City and has been working with FSS for almost 20 years. He began by working at the front desk for the Schilling, and since he had an eagerness to learn more about the sound systems and event set up, it was a natural progression for him. A few days prior to an event the stage is setup, the light and sound equipment is checked, and the layout of the event is determined. This is not just to provide a great event, but it is also to ensure everyone’s safety. Large events take at least six

months worth of planning and they combine the skills of various staff at the Schilling, as well as coordinating with local vendors and base agencies. He explained that it feels great once the events occur successfully. “It takes a long time, so it’s satisfying to see it through to the end,” he said. Shima-san explained one of the longest processes is getting the permits for the fireworks, which we all look forward to enjoying during the summer. Shima-san credits the team at Schilling for always working well together to execute successful, fun events. He said that he is motivated by good communication and teamwork. Kadena has hosted quite a few A-list stars in the past few years including John Legend, Usher, Billy Currington, Papa Roach, and more. This also means that Shima-san and his team are responsible for catering to the needs of the bands. They have to work hard to make sure that the artists have what they need to put on a great show for the people of Kadena. I asked Shima-san what has been his favorite artist to see come through here, but after 20 years, he said it’s hard to choose a favorite! He is grateful for the opportunity he has to experience great music from the unique, backstage perspective.

B
ack in October of 2016, I wrote an article breaking down the SCUBA certification course and detailing my first dive - I can’t believe it has has been a year and a half since I was dive certified! Since then, I’ve had the unique opportunity to delve into the deep and explore the ocean floors. When I was first certified and during my first couple of dives, I was still in awe of my surroundings. I was amazed by the simplest little things. The novelty eventually wore off just a little and it became more normal. It certainly didn’t change how cool everything was when you descend below the surface. For some reason though, at one point I began to question my skills and became a little more hesitant in the water. I concentrated too much on my breathing, which in fact was the opposite of helpful for me. I couldn’t control my buoyancy, making me a flailing fish out of water so to speak, my mask kept fogging no matter what I tried, and I was out of breath a lot of the time. This began to affect my experience in the water and was slightly discouraging. No, I’m not trying to scare you, this is just a small reality. These are things that happen! It is rare that everything always goes perfectly as planned when you are taking on something new. Some make it look really easy, but in fact, they may have had similar experiences. It is all about perspective and about being open to learning and broadening your scope. Instead of giving up on diving altogether, I pushed ahead and kept challenging myself to go on new dives. Without the help and knowledge of my SCUBA buddies, there is a good chance I would have quit. And if I had, I wouldn’t have been able to say that I’ve seen sea turtles, reef sharks, eel, octopus, lionfish, the feather star pictured here, and so much more! There is a reason why having a buddy is one of the first crucial things we are taught when getting certified. SCUBA buddies are there to keep each other safe, and to have a great experience together. After struggling through a couple dives, I took some new steps to preparing my gear, and assessed what I could do differently to improve my experience; and I got in the water again. It turned out to be a wonderful dive! I felt the same as I did when I first started diving. I could see clearly, since I fixed my mask, and I relaxed on the descent, which made it much easier to sink down. These few small changes completely enhanced my dive and got me excited to dive again! I highly encourage anyone to take the plunge. It is one of the most valuable and memorable experiences that you can have while being on this beautiful island. Head over to Kadena Marina and sign up!

Tsuken Island Tsuken island, also known as Carrot Island, is the closest island to the main island of Okinawa that still requires ferry transport. This is a great day-trip! The port is close to the main bridge to Hamahiga Island and is very affordable. Close enough to get to quickly, but far enough away to feel like a trip! It boasts soft white sand, beautiful rock formations, and sparkling turquoise water. There are hotels on the island that offer water sports, but the beach alone is worth going for.

Okuma Beach Getaway to the North! Okuma Beach is still a military installation, but one that has one of the best beaches on the island. Not only that, they also have superb accommodations that can fit any size of group. I have taken a group of 10 friends on two separate occasions, and the Turtle’s Nest cabins were perfect for us. There are plenty of activities for everyone!
Ikei Island There are various beaches on Ikei Island that are perfect for families and friends. Oodomari Beach and Ikei Beach are two that first come to mind. They both have everything one would want in a beach, but can sometimes be a bit fuller due to their popularity. Bring your family for a great day out!
Hamahiga Island
Courtney Beach
Although you don’t need to take a ferry to this island, it is still one of my favorites. It has beautiful, soft sand, quiet surroundings and is in close proximity! Drive across the big red bridge over and see beautiful scenery as you go. This is a popular location for windsurfers, so you’ll see lots of them out on the water as you drive to the beach. Take a cooler of goodies and spend the day in the sun with your friends. This beach does not have amenities so come prepared! Always remember to pack out what you pack in, we want to help keep these beaches as beautiful as they are.
Camp Courtney is one of the only military installations that houses its own beach! It is located on the Movie Theater side of Camp Courtney and is a great place to go spend an afternoon. It is a bit quieter and is best during high tide. You can easily find shadier areas to set up your beach blankets and the water is nice and warm.

Quiet Professionals - that is the best way to describe those at the 1st Special Operations Squadron (SOS), otherwise known as the “Stray Geese.” They are a squadron of approximately 60 Airmen who work hard to make sure everything is mission ready. Their missions are sensitive, and knowing that, they quietly execute it to the best of their ability. This alone demonstrates a commitment and level of humility that is admirable. TSgt Hannah Walters is a Combat Talon II Loadmaster with the 1st Special Operations Squadron who diligently works to ensure her aircraft is preflighted, loaded, rigged, and ready to execute its mission anytime, anywhere. The 1st SOS is part of the 353rd Special Operations Group which is the Air Force Special Operations Command force for the Pacific. The 1st SOS works to provide mobility support and combat employment of US Special Operations Forces.

he Combat Talon II, is an MC-130H that is modified to provide the nfiltration, exfiltration, and resupply of Special Operations Forces n hostile, denied, or politically sensitive areas. With four aircraft, hey provide a critical role in stability/security in the Pacific region. he Talon II has extra abilities specific to AFSOC MC-130’s such as elicopter and tilt-rotor air refueling and a terrain following radar hat allows the aircraft to fly as low as 250 feet at 250 knots with ero visibility.
We went aboard the Talon II as TSgt Walters explained the different lements that they must work with to succeed in their missions. ocal flying is primarily training based, to ensure their aircrews re ready at a moment’s notice. They frequently go on missions hroughout the entire Pacific area of operations, supporting artner nation relationships within the Special Operations ommunity.
he 1st SOS is a unique unit within the Air Force because they ave the luxury of having a small, tight-knit community. Their quadron frequently hold events and morale days that includes he families of their Airmen, further strengthening an already tight ond. Once a crewmember is assigned to the Combat Talon II they sually remain within the community for most of his/her career. his means that between each duty station, they are likely to find amiliar faces.
Sgt Walters explained the squadron has strong and proud ties to s heritage. The 1st SOS motto “With the Guts to Try,” was forged uring the daring 1980 Operation Eagle Claw raid. “We are always
learning from past missions and building a new way forward learning from past missions and building a new way forward,” explained TSgt Walters. The 1st SOS Air Commandos would not be able to execute their crucial missions or training without the tireless work of the 353rd Maintenance and Support Squadrons that care for the fleet of Combat Talons. The unit works closely with them and are appreciative of their hard work. “As Air Commandos we can be at the top of our game, but in reality we are only as good as the aircraft we are given to fly and the support agencies that prepare us for the fight,” explained TSgt Walters; she is glad to have a great team. One of TSgt Walter’s most recent accomplishments was being selected to represent the 353rd SOG at a private lunch with President Trump and South Korea’s President Moon along with 80 other US and ROK Troops last November. She was proud to represent Air Commandos in such a unique experience.

What’s your favorite memory from the Fourth of July? I think my most distinct memory was
actually my first Fourth of July celebration in the United States. I honestly wasn’t totally in tune with all that was going on since English was not my first language, nor did I really understand the meaning of the holiday. But I do remember learning the lyrics to “America the Beautiful” and singing my little heart out along with the booms of the awesome fireworks display. The Fourth of July is a fun time to gather with friends and family and spend time together. It can certainly be a bit harder to celebrate overseas, where it is not the “Fourth of July” outside of the base, but it doesn’t mean you can’t throw an awesome BBQ in your backyard, play games, and have a great time. If you don’t want to use your own backyard, give Outdoor Recreation a call and reserve one of the many gazebos that come equipped with outdoor BBQ grills and tables. The one we were at even had a volleyball court! You can also rent other types of gear to outfit your event such as picnic tables, lawn games, inflatable bounce houses, and lots more. Who knows more about throwing a great backyard BBQ than Dads? No one! The awesome Dads from this month’s Venture cover showed us how it’s done. Devin Langford, Marq Jackson, and Stephen Duremdez cooked up a mean BBQ. We’re talking spiced chicken, kalbi ribs, and thyme-basted ribeye! They participated in our Facebook contest and were selected to be featured on the cover. There will be plenty more opportunities to be featured, so if you’re interested be on the lookout on our Facebook page. If you’re looking for day-of Fourth of July fireworks, check out Okuma Beach! They will have a great display to celebrate. In the event their rooms are booked, stay outdoors and camp! They have all the necessary equipment for rental, so there’s no need to purchase your own. See a new part of the island this Fourth of July! Paid ad. No federal endorsement of advertiser intended.
