Note

July is here and it is starting with a bang! Smile Days is happening from 1 - 5 July and offers prizes, discounts, and experiences to enjoy. Make sure to visit Uncle Sam’s Backyard BBQ on the Fourth of July to see the Grand Prize winners announced and make some great memories. Summer is the perfect time to pick up a new hobby or skill. The Arts & Crafts Center and Auto Hobby are hosting a shut-in where you can try out a new craft. On top of that, many golf tournaments are coming up, perfect for golfers of any skill level. Now is also the time to make sure you enjoy your time in the surf and sun, while the weather is still beautiful. Don’t forget, however, July brings fireworks and the possibility of typhoons, which can be a stressful time in your pet’s life. Stop by Karing Kennels to pick up products to help your furry family member stay calm. Still looking to find a pet? Stop by the adoption facility during the “Claws” free cat adoption event and bring home your new best friend. Whether it’s a new hobby, new food, or new friend — July has it all. Get ready to “Venture” out and explore!

A DAY IN THE LIFE...

46 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

18TH MUNITIONS SQUADRON

Written by Ellen Ice A day in the life of an airman of the 18th Munitions Squadron is anything but boring. “Every day is different,” SSgt Taylor Sepnafski said. Their squadron is large in every sense of the word. They play an integral role in the success of the F-15 squadrons, EOD, and Security Forces and man the Air Force’s largest conventional munitions storage area. The squadron provides Kadena Air Base with munitions for more than 12,000 annual sorties and maintains a war reserve materiel stockpile for all of PACAF. “We move munitions to all of the shops we work for, like if they have an inspection or need it for the flight line we provide it for them, and then they prep it for where it needs to go next,” SrA Jonathan White, stockpile manager, said. Every bullet, every missile, every piece of ammunition required for the mission, 18th MUNS is responsible for – even down to the canopy remover cartridge, the explosive initiator responsible for ejecting a pilot when there’s no other option. In June of 2018, an Eagle pilot in the 44th Fighter Squadron had to utilize that very device 18th MUNS produces to eject from his jet. “A lot of people look at bombs and munitions as like... oh we go and hurt people, but in reality, we do what we do so that we can keep everyone safe,” SSgt Toby Queen said. Queen is the assistant shop chief for Tactical Air Munition Rapid Response Package, or TARRP. His section is currently customizing pallet builds by designing the first-ever combined missile package to support ACE, also known as Agile Combat Employment. The squadrons can

now request exactly what munitions they require, and TARRP delivers. The 18th MUNS TARRP is the only section in the pacific theater, which Queen said has led to a humorous motto, “Best TARRP in PACAF!” All jokes aside, the 18th MUNS mission is one that the Air Force, specifically the fighter squadrons, couldn’t go without.

If it wasn’t for us, it would just be a really expensive airliner with cool uniforms “Most of the assets that we have here enable our fighters to go out and conduct their mission,” SSgt Sepnafski said, “If it wasn’t for us, it would just be a really expensive airliner with cool uniforms.” Recently the squadron participated in Combat Ammunition Production Exercise, or CAPEX. The exercise tested the squadron on their ability to efficiently break down bombs, track the parts, and move assets to pads while staying on a tight timeline. All of the trials were timed, and several airmen were recognized for their hard work. A1C Michael Cronin, named Superior Performer for the exercise, said, “I had a smile on my face the whole time and I was just loving it.” For 18th MUNS, success is measured both in uniform and out of uniform. SSgt Queen said he wants to make sure all of his airmen are planning for their future. “Education is a big thing for

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV

me, so I try to get them to pursue education and make their lives better outside of the military,” Queen said. He is currently organizing a seminar for the squadron to ensure younger airmen have a better understanding of their opportunities. Having a squadron invested in their personnel is part of the reason Cronin said he loves his job. “My favorite part of the job is the people I work with.” He said working in the 6,000-acre munitions area — which is itself bigger than the rest of Kadena Air Base — also adds to an interesting work experience. “I think it’s really cool that this bomb dump exists and it’s just out here in the jungle,” Cronin said. During our time with 18th MUNS, it was evident the airmen attached to the squadron were truly dedicated to the mission. We watched several parts of their process, from the initial information briefing to securing a pallet and getting that load onto a tractor trailer. As a F-15 spouse, it was eye opening to see what a large role 18th MUNS plays in getting my husband’s jet combat ready. Hearing answers to why they chose their career field made it even better. “I wanted to work more closely to the flightline, be able to send munitions to the line, and just be able to see what our munitions can actually do” SSgt Thomas Nollie said. The Air Force’s mission of Fly, Fight, and Win wouldn’t be possible without the enveloping support of 18th MUNS, and while we recognize their service, they wanted to shout out their spouses, family members, and squadron for keeping them grounded so Kadena’s defenders can soar.
