Welcome to Venture magazine! Happy July! I can’t believe the year is more than halfway over. We have some awesome programs planned for this summer. Check out the Family Adventure Camp through Kadena Outdoor Recreation on pg. 29. This time of year means the water is WARM, so jump right in! Kadena Marina is offering dives, snorkeling trips, paddleboarding, and more. If you want to grab a rental from the Beach Shack, you can do that at your leisure on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays! Make sure you are continuing to log your minutes for the DoD Virtual Summer Reading program! Weekly winners are drawn, so head to the Kadena Library to snag your next great read. We also have big news - we have a BRAND NEW Teen Center! Stop by Bldg. 439 to see the new digs, and check out the article on pg. 13 to find out about all the cool upgrades. If you’re looking for craft ideas for the fourth of July, check out Arts & Crafts on pg. 17. They are offering a virtual wood class, so you can pick up a new skill while creating something fun! Even though road tax season is now behind us, it’s always helpful to brush up on the JCI process. The experts at Auto Hobby walked us through how to handle (and pass!) your upcoming JCI. For all the information on JCI’s and all the services Auto Hobby articles, flip to pg. 25. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable fourth of July! Make sure to wear sunscreen, stay hydrated, have a plan if you’re drinking, and most of all enjoy this beautiful island we live on. We hope you find inspiration in this month’s Venture magazine!

Written by: Meagan Abell Summer is looking sunny for the Teen Center on Kadena! They have moved into their new location, building 439 (right beside Himawari School Age Care), just in time for summer activities to take off. Teen Programs Director, Ms. Laura “LJ” Jefferson, gave credit to the Keystone Club for the planning of the new wall colors and design of the rooms. As affiliate members of the Boys and Girls Club of America, the Teen Center implements their clubs into their program. “Keystone members often plan special events and provide input on decisions about the Teen Center,” said Jefferson, “the club is directed by teens, with the focus of academic success, career preparation, teen outreach, and community service.” The new Teen Center will greet the kids with a large open concept building complete with walls of windows and natural sunlight, which is sure to provide welcoming vibes to anyone who enters! The new facility will still feature many of the same favorite spaces as the previous facility. The ‘Thrill Zone’, a fan favorite for the teens, comes equipped with TVs mounted on the walls for gaming, air hockey tables, and a pool table. Also featured in the Thrill Zone is a kitchenette area where the members will be able to participate in cooking lessons, and tables to have snacks or play games. Another member favorite space that will be returning is the music room. The music room has a designated “Jam Session” area with a piano, and an assortment of guitars and instruments where teens can be creative with their friends, or space to practice on their own. The ‘Chill Zone’ offers cozy chairs and quiet nooks to create an atmosphere to read a book, play board games, and it even has a small computer lab for the teens to work on homework. The vibe in this space is relaxed, and a great way to decompress or chat with friends. Starting this July, The Teen Center will be hosting a series of week-long specialty camps. Jefferson stated, “we offer year-round programming for character and leadership, health and life skills, education and career, art, science, and sports fitness while incorporating technology.” The specialty camps set for this July will cover everything from STEM 101 (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics), to how to incorporate wellness into your life with a week-long boot camp. However, these specialty camps will continue throughout the year, so stay tuned for more announcements in the coming months! Jefferson said that throughout this pandemic, the staff really missed the interaction with the teens, and as a team, they worked tirelessly to make sure the teens have an awesome place to come back to.

It tends to have two shades a very light shade of wood combined with a very contrasting brown grain. Because of its abundance, it tends to be fairly inexpensive and with its contrasting grain can provide an aesthetic bang for your buck when used to build cabinetry or furniture! Hickory with age takes on a very warm amber tint, making it a favorite to use for that rustic cabin feel! WELCOME TO UNITE! My name is Cindy Workman, and I’m your Community Programs and Unit Cohesion Coordinator (C-3). As your C-3, my primary function is to serve as your Unite Squadron POC’s focal point for planning, developing, coordinating, and paying for programs and events whether on/off the installation, or virtually! Would you like “lunch money” to partner with your event? Funding for both the activity and some refreshments is available to every Active Duty member, APF and NAF civilian employees, and local nationals in your squadron (based on UMD at time of disbursement). Today, social distancing is extremely important for all us to stay safe, but it doesn’t mean we can’t stay connected and have some fun as a team. We have some GREAT virtual team building events ready for you to choose from and this list continues to evolve. Unit developed ideas are also highly encouraged, so please feel free to submit your own virtual event ideas. Contact your squadron POC to discuss virtual options that have been provided to them. Written By: Ellen Ice
When I first got my Oki car, a rusted, dented, scratched up, sandy gold Funcargo, I was truly in shock. Add in driving on the “wrong” side of the road, the vehicle being much smaller than I was used to, not having cruise control, the wipers being on the opposite side... I was definitely overwhelmed! I just want to get in the car, drive, try to stay on the correct side of the road, and get to and from my destinations safely. Thankfully, I found out about Auto Hobby, our very own car care center on Kadena. I talked to the Service Manager, Michael Francis, to answer some of my most anxiety-ridden questions. Let’s start with the big one- what in the heck is a JCI?? Francis told me JCI stands for Japanese Compulsory Insurance, and it’s insurance that is mandatory to be paid bi-annually to the Government of Japan Vehicle Inspection. When my JCI came due last year, my husband and I decided to go the do-ityourself route. Francis explained the two options to me: 1. Doing it yourself: You will go to any insurance company and purchase JCI. After that, you will proceed to Vehicle Registration Office on Camp Foster and pay the next mandatory fees of Weight Tax and Processing Fees. Once paid, you go to the inspection line for the last payment of $25 for the actual inspection of the vehicle. If the vehicle passes, then you will be issued a new title for the vehicle stating the new expiration date. If something does fail during the inspection, you have 2 weeks to get the repairs complete and the re-inspection done to receive the new title. 2. Having the inspection done for you: This process requires you to just drop the vehicle of at a garage. From there the garage will do everything from paying all the mandatory fees to any repairs that might be needed to pass the inspection. All you have to do is pay at the end and pick your vehicle up when completed. Average cost of Inspection if doing it yourself is around: $350, if no repairs are needed. Average cost of Inspection if a garage is used: $470, if no repairs are needed. Common failures for the Inspection are headlight alignment or intensity test and torn rubber boots like ball joint boots or CV boots.

An issue I’ve had as a driver, that no one likes to talk about, is mold and cockroaches. Yeah, I know. GROSS. Unfortunately, those two factors come with the hot, humid Oki climate. Make sure to keep your air condition serviced, as Francis told me that a functioning air conditioner can help prevent mold. I also personally recommend the dehumidifer containers/bags that you can keep in your car that will get the moisture out of the air. As for roaches, keep your car picked up! But also don’t freak out, because I don’t think I know one person who hasn’t had a roach in their car at one point or the other. Pick up traps from the BX - you’ll be alright. I’m 100% guilty of driving cars into the ground as my stepdad likes to put it. Basically, I don’t check fluids or change the oil, and I blatantly ignore warning lights. Take it from me, that’s a terrible idea, for so many reasons! Francis gave me a great example of something that could have been handled fairly easily at the onset of the problem, but after increased damage, becomes quite a headache. “We get customers that say they are hearing a grinding noise every time they push the brakes. In this situation, it’s usually caused by the brake pads being worn completely down to nothing and the vehicle is being stopped by metal to metal contact with the brake rotor. If you catch it quick, it could be a $200 repair. If you continue to drive and decide to do it later, then the cost could go up to around $400 or more as the brake rotors will now have to be replaced as they are worn thin by the metal to metal contact. This also causes extreme friction which is extreme heat and could possibly now cause brake caliper damage or wheel bearing damage.” As someone who has actually done this on a previous vehicle, damaging my brake pads so bad that I destroyed all of the rotors, I can tell you this is a costly and silly misstep. To be a better car owner than I am, I highly recommend letting Auto Hobby take care of all your car servicing needs. They do nearly everything on any vehicle for maintenance with the exception of paint and body work and electrical repairs. They have a Sales Stores where you find automative products, and they can also order parts for you to use on their Do-It-Yourself side. They also offer Roadside Assistance which covers towing, lock-out service, jump starting, or just changing out a spare tire. Lastly, they have an insurance office on site to provide not only automative insurance but can also offer home, fire, or property damage insurance. Take care of your Oki car, and let Auto Hobby help!

A DAY IN THE LIFE...
Written by: Ellen Ice Hello from the 18 FSS Marketing Office! We have a long, proud history of excellence, starting with our incredible graphics department. Kadena’s marketing office was one of the first in the Air Force, and here from the very origin is our talented graphic artist Yoshihiro Higa. He has been with us for 32 years! You may recognize his art at the Risner Fitness Center, as well as his graphic designs every month in Venture Magazine. Our other three graphic artists have been here for 73 years combined: Takako Uehara (28 years), Yuka Kinjo (27 years), and Yasuhiro Nerome (18 years). Nerome said his favorite part of the job is efficiently creating and editing advertisements! To say they are the heart and soul of our office would be a massive understatement. We could not produce the monthly magazine, hundreds of other projects to include posters, digital signage, marquees, logos, and more, without their undeniable expertise.
My favorite part of the job is filming Ok Oki as well as bringing insight to all the fun events going on with 18 FSS Our team also includes the marketing director, commercial sponsorship coordinator, account executives (AE), a publicity assistant, web content manager, writer editor, photographer, and videographer. We have one of the largest marketing offices in the Air Force! Our account executives are responsible for handling FSS facilities’ marketing needs, as well as taking on other projects like the Ok Oki vlog! “My favorite part of the job is filming Ok Oki as well as bringing insight to all the fun events going on with 18 FSS,” AE Natalie Amara said. AE Meagan Abell just started with the Marketing Office in March of this year and said the entire experience of getting to know our squadron has been awesome. “I love learning about all the different events that FSS puts on,” Abell said. Autumn Webb has been with our office a year, and said she enjoys the unique lens of marketing for a military squadron, “I get to navigate the marketing field and explore the many outlets it has such as video production, advertising, social media management, and more.”

18 FSS Marketing Office Our publicity assistant’s responsible include Venture magazine distribution (6,000 a monththat’s no easy feat!), as well as managing our digital advertising and marquee. Jae Mi Cracolici said her favorite part of the job is working with the awesome team at the Marketing Office. Another staple in our office is our videographer Att Eachus, who has been producing videos for the marketing office for nearly 11 years. “To be able to turn a hobby into a job is a dream come true,” Eachus said. He produces around 200 videos a year and has been integral to several video series the office has produced over the years, to include Oki Up Close, Kadena Eats, Ok Oki, What’s Up Kadena, and many more projects. Readers will recognize our photographer’s work every month in the pages of Venture magazine. Kylie Austin has been with us since November 2019 and said her favorite part of the job is doing photo shoots with Karing Kennels, as well as trying all the tasty FSS food during our limited time food offer shoots. Our extremely gifted web content manager, Leeann McCathern, is responsible the Kadena FSS website (kadenafss.com - check it out!) as well as managing our social media accounts to include Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube. She also co-stars with Natalie in “Ok Oki.” The writer editor (that’s me!) is responsible for the monthly Venture magazine production, as well as all materials that come out of our office. I have also been fortunate in my 2.5 years with marketing to develop a weekly radio show with AFN, “What’s Up Kadena.” Shameless plug, head to our YouTube page to check out all of our informative video series- trust me, we have SO MUCH for customers to enjoy.
To be able to turn a hobby into a job is a dream come true From all of us here at the Marketing Office, thank you for picking up the Venture magazine, thank you for attending our events, thank you for giving us feedback, and thank you for taking advantage of everything 18 FSS offers. We appreciate you!
