VENTURE |June 2023

EDITOR’S LETTER

Have the best Okinawa summer with us as we provide the food and entertainment for you and your family! “June in” for a list of incredible summer extravaganzas going on this month.

Don’t be a bummer, it’s summer! Go on Venture trips with the Kadena Marina on the weekends and holidays along with ODR’s upcoming expeditions to explore Okinawa’s underwater world snorkeling or diving. Submerge under the sea and behold a whole new cerulean world along with the many forms of sea creatures.

If short drives are what you aim for, we have events on base just for you! Drop by Hargerstrom Pool and experience their floating obstacle course, bring your swing at the Chibana Golf Course’s 2-Person Alternate Shot, or join the M&FRC’s EFMP Summer Bash. It’s an affair for everybody, young, old, and everything in between!

Don’t want to be under the sun? Stop by O’Club as they host their own version of a Summer Beach Bash. Show up for a chance to show off your flexible limbo skills! For all the bookworms, the Library is kicking off their Summer Reading Program with loads of different activities throughout the month. Lastly, this month is the U.S. Army’s birthday and RisN’ Shine is celebrating with a discount for those who love to get a sip of happiness!

For our athletes, live up to your code name and battle it out on Kadena Esports Summer Showdown Grand Finale this month. Rally up your unit and win over $3,000 in prizes.

That’s not all! Last month, we celebrated our moms so now is the time to celebrate our dads! Several of our facilities are hosting events to thank all the dads who work tirelessly day in and day out. Visit the E’Club for breakfast, Teen Center for Doughnuts with Dad, and O’Club for brunch. If your dad likes to shop, the Arts & Crafts Center and Risner Pro Shop are offering discounts you won’t want to miss!

Create more memories with dad and head over to Emery Lanes to take advantage of their free games for dads all day long. Follow up at the O’Club for a Father and Son Shindig for a chance to get dad in the dunk tank, ITT for a bullfight, and the Kadena Marina for a Father and Son Fishing Event. All these just to honor and celebrate dad!

SURPRISE! There’s more! It’s never too early to make it rain with tons of amazing giveaways and prizes, so we’ve decided to celebrate DOMO DAYS early this year! Yes, it’s THIS MONTH! Refer to pages 34 to 37 to get a glimpse of what this week-long, $100K value, give-back campaign will look like. We’re introducing DOMO, your adventure-seeking smiley, who will be carrying little giveaways while visiting several of our facilities throughout the week. “DOMO ARIGATO” from your Kadena FSS!

History Shisaof

Oki safe in the hands of Shisa

You may have noticed two statues standing guard upon entering the many residences, restaurants, and shops all over Okinawa, once prospered as the Ryukyu Kingdom. These lion-shaped heads with doglike bodies are called “Shisa,” “Shi Shi,” or Lion Dogs. They are known to ward off evil spirits and stand guard protecting the premises from misfortune.

As you cruise around the island, you will stumble upon Shisa in different sizes, colors, forms, and with unique designs; however, no matter the appearance, Shisa is mostly presented in pairs. The pair consists of a male and female; one with its mouth open to prevent evil spirits from entering while the other, closed to keep the good spirits in.

Another version you will notice is of Shisa’s paw resting on a golden sphere which is believed to welcome and attract good fortune. As mentioned, Shisa comes in different forms: from t-shirts, keychains, and stickers; you will see them in different colors with some in different stances.

According to the legend, the Okinawan mythological creature originally came from China and was later introduced to the Ryukyu Islands in the Middle Ages. Other versions of Shisa exist in other parts of Asia; all for the same purpose of safeguarding its people from evil spirits.

There exist several stories about Shisa’s folklore. One legend indicates Shisa arose when the Ryukyuan king was gifted a necklace containing a Shisa figure acquired from a Chinese diplomat. Per the tale, Madanbashi villagers were assailed by a sea dragon time and again until one day, the king was asked to hold up his necklace as the monstrous dragon attacked.

A loud rumbling roar came out of the Shisa figure causing a rockfall to press on the dragon’s back end. Immobile, the dragon died and later transformed into Gana-Mui Forest as vegetation loomed from its body.

The oldest Shisa in Okinawa, the “Tomori no Ishibori Ufujishi,” still exists to this day and is considered a significant piece of folklore.

The stone-carved piece has survived many calamities and have protected the villagers throughout the years.

To honor our host nation, Kadena Air Base created their own Shisa mascot crafted by a local employee from the 18 Force Support Squadron Marketing Office. Shisa came to life in Kadena in 2015 to show appreciation and raise awareness of what they represent. Hereafter, Shisa has developed to be Kadena FSS’ mascot known to be present at events such as this month’s DOMO Days.

Whether you spot shisa standing guard on or in front of a building, as little souvenirs, on shirts, hats, or stickers, know that it exists to protect, the opposite of their considerably scary façade.

#FindSomething Special

Okinawa is known for its mystical scenery and sites, which is why we want to give prominence to the creative images you capture during your expeditions. Our monthly #FindSomethingSpecial has become a point of interest for adventure-seekers to peruse for more unique and rare locations to visit, and this month’s entries highlight the alluring charm of the island with aesthetically pleasing shots that make for insta-worthy content.

@tasha_schulze posted a photo of her son strolling by Tropical Beach as the sky was gleaming with the blaze of the setting sun and patches of stratocumulus clouds surrounding it. The view of the sunset in combination of the clouds and the cerulean ocean made for a perfect photoshoot session. This is one of Tasha and her family’s favorite viewing spot where they, along with other families, gather to get a glimpse of the spectacular Okinawa nightfall.

@lydia_costello chose to stay indoors and paid the STEM Resort in Naha a visit. Just how a-doughrable are these donut wall decorations! Lydia even made it a point to match with the interior color palette to create an artistic snapshot. The resort is perfect for kids and adults alike with areas created for educational play and relaxation. Don’t forget to plan your ensemble for the countless instagrammable spots this resort has to offer, from a giant ball pit, garden lanterns, to donut slides. Pose ‘til you drop with these bountiful options.

@amyyyly journeyed by foot for a feeling of Eutierria – becoming one with nature – as she came across a waterfall. The cascade called for her despite the bleak water temperature. She searched for a perfect section and stood in awe as she savored the breeze, relaxing sounds of the waterfall stream, and cozy view of the scattered sunlight trickling through the trees. This right here is what Okinawa is all about; the majestic and mystical landscapes that few get to witness unless they venture out.

Enjoying the Okinawa creativeness? Be sure to use the hashtag #FindSomethingSpecial when showcasing your travels on island! We love seeing all the undertakings you and your friends and family are embarking on. See you soon, readers!
