We work together to make sure that everything is right, the crew here works hard to help each other out! Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn

P

aul Morin, the SCUBA Technician at the Kadena Marina, has been with FSS since 2012 and specifically with the Marina since 2017. He is from Fresno, California but has been living in Okinawa for eight years. Mr. Morin used to work at Emery Lanes, and while they were closed for maintenance last year, he was shifted to the Marina staff since he has a technical background that could be applied to SCUBA equpiment. This turned out to be a great move! His degree is in Computer and Electronics Engineering and he worked for the SEGA-SEUI division, the USA arcade division of Sega Japan, where he learned the ins and outs of technical work. Since SCUBA is a primarily pneumatic system, it was similar to what he was used to working on, and it got easier to understand with time. A few months ago, Mr. Morin and his coworker were sent to Kitakami, Japan to get certified on maintaining Bauer Four-Stage Breathing (Air) compressors. The whole course was in Japanese, so it was helpful that he speaks, writes, and reads Japanese!

Since it is an airtight seal, it ensures that no salt water will get in the regulator and start corroding the regulator and make sure it’s 100% dry before storing it. Finally, he recommends to get out and enjoy the water this summer!

He says the best part about working at the Marina is being outside, ‘the hotter the better’ he says. He likes having such a solid team of co-workers. “We work together to make sure that everything is right, the crew here works hard to help each other out!” Mr. Morin gave us a few tips for staying safe while diving this summer. Tip#1: Make sure you’re performing regular maintenance on your gear at least once a year. “It’s very important to avoid

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... propulsion flight

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn

We’ve all heard the roar of the fighter jets flying past in the morning and in some cases, even at night. To some the roar could be a disturbance, however, to most and especially for the Propulsion Flight, it is the sound of hard work and freedom. TSgt Jeremy Hall is the F100 Jet Engine Intermediate Maintenance (JEIM) Production Supervisor from Charles Town, West Virginia. Yes, it probably is one of the longest titles around! He is responsible for not only the safety and reliability of F-15 engine teardowns and buildups, but making sure his section is well-equipped and well-informed to tackle the duties of the day. Every morning, TSgt Hall and the SSgts he supervises discuss what maintenance they can accomplish throughout the day. This is a type of workflow I can relate to; if you know exactly what is possible for the day, nothing seems too daunting. TSgt Hall is responsible for the largest section in the Propulsion Flight, which consists of 45 Airman of the 155 assigned. He works with them daily to execute these tasks, and once all of his airman are informed of the maintenance plan, they roll up their sleeves and get to work. Producing quality engines in a timely manner is the primary goal of the Propulsion Flight. They exercise two critical methods to solidify their success: being proactive and planning ahead - and by doing so, they’ve been successful. 28 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

TSgt Hall explained by forecasting how many parts, modules, and engines they have in stock, they can plan for what will be needed in the future. Planning ahead beyond the base requirements from the Air Force means TSgt Hall and his team are constantly analyzing what parts are needed to complete an engine repair. I learned these parts are not easy to come by, F-15 and F-16 units around the Air Force must actually compete for the same constrained engine parts. One of TSgt Hall’s methods that has helped the priority engine flow process involves only working engines that have all required major modules available and on-hand. This is accomplished through long range (24 month) forecasting and prediction metrics, which has increased the section’s production efforts by 35%. Competition for parts is dependent on the mission, and the Propulsion Flight is so

My number one focus is to build engines to prevent aircraft downtime .

TSgt Hall not only focuses on meeting the mission requirements but also on ensuring he is developing the airman under his leadership. One of TSgt Hall’s airmen just completed his 5-level CDCs, started taking college classes immediately, and has only been here for eight months. The leaders are proud to have someone who is striving to be the best he can be, and it sets the mold for what they want for their airmen. “We want them pursuing personal growth as well,” explained TSgt Hall. Motivation builds motivation, hence by seeing young Airman excel, the entire shop benefits. Additionally, the Propulsion Flight set the record for PACAF War Ready Engine Level at 250% as they produced 20 jet engines to be on standby, which contributed to the Flight being named 2017 Maintenance Group Flight of the Year. “All the recognition is directly attributed to the hard working and dedicated Airmen of the Propulsion Flight,” said TSgt Hall. He wanted to give a shout-out to TSgt Steven Smart, his wingman who has worked on F100 engines for 16 years and has been vital to his and the Flight’s success.

far ahead of the game in their stock of engines, that it is harder to compete for new parts. We concluded this was a good problem to have! He routinely sends Airmen out to the Flightline to inspect engines that may have an issue. He trusts his Airmen to diagnose the engine and determine whether or not it needs to be removed from the aircraft for further inspection. Oftentimes, the issue does not warrant the engine to be taken off the jet and can be fixed on the spot. These are some of the ways TSgt Hall and his team prioritize time and energy. Like every other flight and squadron, one of the Propulsion Flight’s main goals is mission readiness. This is often measured by base-wide exercises. The first order of business during an exercise is aircraft generation (getting the jets off the ground), and the Propulsion Flight ensures the mission is not hindered due to an engine related issue.

he club has been a focal point of Kadena Air Base since its early beginnings. Originally introduced to the community in February of 1957, it has and will continue to serve as the best source of entertainment for service members on Kadena. According to Mr. Evan Muxen, the Kadena Base Historian, the very ďŹ rst club on Kadena was actually called the Stillwell Club, which was constructed in 1949 after WWII. It since evolved to the Rocker NCO Club until 2016, and now stands as the Rocker Enlisted Club. There is so much history on this island and facilities such as the Rocker, serve as a place where military members build memories. The Rocker has grown and evolved with the times, from hosting 1950s ragtime entertainment to popular entertainers of today. The brand new $50 million, 57,000 square foot, cutting-edge complex boasts a large ballroom which seats 800 people, Hanabi’s, which offers lunch and dinner items along with 16 craft beer taps, Kazoku Place, which is great for family dining, Daily Grind, which has free WiFi and great coffee, and the Rocker Lounge which has a nightclub appeal. It also includes a newly equipped state-of-the-art Game Room, three outdoor seating areas, and great sound and lighting equipment throughout. It is the new home for the

amazing catering services that used to be at the Banyan Tree Club. A number of events that were held at the Rocker NCO Club had been discontinued due to lack of space, but they are back in full-swing and better than ever at the new Rocker Enlisted Club. 50K Bingo Nights, Super Ladies Night, Membership Appreciation Nights, Social Hour with Progressive Drawing, and much more. The Rocker Enlisted Club is open to all enlisted military members and civilian equivalents. Kazoku Place, the Game Room and Daily Grind however, are open to all ranks during normal business hours and Hanabi’s is also open to all ranks until 9 pm. The best way to enjoy the new club to the fullest is by becoming an Enlisted Club member. Hurry and sign up to take full advantage of the great benefits that becoming a member provides you! If you’d like to learn more, see pages 42-43. Over the years, the Clubs have been fortunate to have an exceptional staff to help make the Rocker what it is today. It even honors past employees by having two rooms named after them: the Kuba room, and the Morrell room. The structures have changed - and will continue to change over the years, but the legacy of the hard-working people will always remain. Many different groups of dedicated people played a part in the successful reconstruction, and they are proud to present the brand new Rocker Enlisted Club!

The 4th of July is a nostalgic time for many people, including myself. Like many, I think of summertime, delicious BBQ food, watermelon, and of course, fireworks! I grew up in Idaho - Idaho Falls to be specific, and it boasts the biggest fireworks display west of the Mississippi. I have no clue if that’s entirely accurate, but it sure is a great show! Being abroad, it’s important to celebrate times like these to connect us to home; more importantly, let’s remember what the 4th of July is all about. Colonists bravely fought in the Revolutionary War to provide freedom and independence from the British government. We’re not shooting off fireworks just for the sake of it; rather, we’re celebrating the birth of the United States of America as an independent nation. Keeping history alive through traditions is a great way to honor those who fought for our freedom. To help you celebrate this year, we’ve compiled a list of the best fireworks shows on the island!
