EDITOR’S

Note

June is finally here and I cannot wait for all of the fun summer activities to come. Whether it is a summer trip to Osaka or the Keramas, or spending the day at the Kadena Marina zooming around on a jet ski, there is so much fun to be had on Okinawa during the summer! In between sunbathing and swimming, take some time this month to celebrate the fathers in your life as well. FSS has a variety of discounts, meals, and activities picked out just for Dad. There are even a few Father & Daughter Dances to bring your little ones to and make new memories. I don’t want to get to ahead of myself, but there is also a big week ahead of us at the beginning of July! Celebrate Independence Day with a “Smile” with discounts and free things to experience and enjoy. The Uncle Sam’s Backyard BBQ will happen on 4 July at 5 pm. Make sure you block off some time to bring your family for good food, good times, and even better memories. There is so much to do. Get ready to venture out and explore!

VISIT OSAKA WITH KADENA ITT Written by • Lizzy Bryan

O

ne of the best vacation destinations near Okinawa is Osaka, Japan. Whether it is a trip to Universal Studios Japan®, Osaka Castle, or Dotonbori, there is somewhere to visit that will please any traveler. Universal Studios Japan® is perfect for thrill seekers of any age. They offer attractions themed around Jurassic Park™, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter™, Minions™, Hollywood, and much more. Osaka Castle dates back to 1597 and is one of the most iconic landmarks in Japan. Take some time to stroll around the castle grounds, see street performers, and enjoy free concerts. This castle is a breathtaking sight from any angle, and there are a variety photo opportunities, available day or night, that make the perfect addition to any scrapbook or album. Another iconic area of Osaka is Dotonbori. This is the entertainment heart of Osaka and offers delicious food, shopping, and a range entertainment options. Start checking off your bucket list by visiting an owl, cat, or snake cafe, experiencing a traditional tea ceremony, or visiting one of the many landmarks around Osaka. If you’re traveling with kids there is an abundance of places to visit. From parks and arcades to sports complexes, there are many unique places to take kids of any age. There are “escape rooms” to enjoy as well, which are perfect for adults and children alike! If you are more interested in nightlife and food, Osaka has a variety of things to offer! This area of Japan is well known for having delicious food and special spins on classic Japanese dishes. Want to bring the taste of Osaka home with you? If you want a more curated experience, you can sign up for one of the many tours available. They cover a variety of topics and take place throughout the day. There is a perfect option for you no matter what your preference may be: historical sites, food, drink, and much more. Perhaps my favorite part about Osaka is its prime location. Places like Kyoto are only a short train ride away and make the perfect day trip. Take advantage of your time in Japan. 18th Dental Squadron “Venture” magazine recently had the opportunity to interview Lieutenant Colonel (Select) Anita Shade of the 18th Dental Squadron. She works wears a variety of hats including: clinician, Chief of Professional Services, and Medical Director of the clinic. Lt Col (S) Shade is part of the general dentistry team and spoke repeatedly about her love for the patients she sees, the hard work her team does, and the importance of the work they do.

Our patients are our most precious commodity, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve ourselves and take care of them better. Anita and her team are diligent in their efforts to ensure the 18th Dental Squadron is always improving. She remarked that, “our patients are our most precious commodity, and we are constantly looking for ways to improve ourselves and take care of them better.” Kadena’s Dental Squadron is the largest in PACAF with a team of 25 dentists and 108 support staff. Their team, lead by Colonel Conner, provides comprehensive dental services including general dentistry and six specialties. There are 16.4K beneficiaries on Okinawa and the Dental Squadron completes 34.6K patient visits annually. Lt Col (S) Shade’s daily efforts involve a great deal of juggling. Her primary responsibilities include caring for patients and working with the leadership team to address policy and quality of care concerns. She also maintains regular contact with the Hospital Credentials and Quality Managers. Anita works with the EFMP

office as well to manage their dental facility determination requests. Lt Col (S) Shade emphasized the contributions of the General Dentistry Element within the 18th Dental Squadron. This team of 15 dental officers and 50 enlisted is the largest element within the Clinical Dentistry Flight. They are the heartbeat of the organization and their work keeps the Airmen of the 18th Wing mission ready. Lt Col (S) Shade also fills a unique role in her contributions to the Wing mission. Anita was born in India, and her South Asian decent and cultural familiarity with the Indo-Pacific region has provided opportunities for her to serve in roles where her heritage can provide a new perspective. Anita was recently selected to serve as co-planner in a Subject Matter Medical Exchange with the Sri Lankan Air Force. Her cultural familiarity will provide a distinct advantage to the mission that will boost Sri Lanka’s response to natural and man-made disasters. This mission, in light of the unfortunate recent Easter bombings, is now critically important. Lt Col (S) Shade is also in line for future bilateral negotiations with her native country, India. She said she is “excited and humbled by the opportunity to serve as a cultural ambassador to strengthen our alliances in the Indo-Pacific.” Other recent accomplishments for Lt Col (S) Shade include the opportunity to dive back into general dentistry. At her previous assignment she had little opportunity for direct patient care. It takes four years of training to complete dental school followed by a year of training with the military called “Advanced Education in General Dentistry” and Lt Col (S) Shade is eager to put her training to use once more. She actively seeks out the opportunity to care for patients who are fearful of the dentist. She challenges herself to help them face their fears by providing a listening

ear and calm demeanor. Another important accomplishment for Anita was a personal one. This assignment was her first as a single mother of two young sons. She mentioned, although it has been a challenging two years, she is proud to say they are thriving.

Every single day, every single patient that I talk to is an opportunity to learn more about where they are from, what they do, and how they fi t into the Wing mission. Lt Col (S) Anita Shade’s love for her profession was evident early on in our interview. Her favorite part of her job is the personal interaction. The friendships and connections she makes with the people she encounters brings richness and fulfillment to her day. “Every single day, every single patient that I talk to is an opportunity to learn more about where they are from, what they do, and how they fit into the Wing mission.” She treats her interactions with fellow providers, the Japanese nationals who work down the hall, or her patients as an opportunity to see a new perspective. Lt Col (S) Anita Shade’s office motto is “I am here to serve. I strive to treat my patients, regardless of age or rank, with the utmost respect and to the best of my ability. I choose to remain grateful, to see the glass half full.” Her belief in that motto radiated throughout our conversation. Lt Col (S) Shade gave shout outs to the General Dentistry team, her two children (Joshua and Joel), her mother who helps lift her up, and her church community who feeds her spiritually.
