ew places on Earth activate the spirit of wanderlust like Okinawa, Japan. Despite its relatively modest footprint, this island boasts a vibrant and diverse landscape that begs to be discovered. Every explorer needs a map, fierce optimism, and some know-how. Let Kadena FSS facilities arm you with the tools you need to make this island your oyster.

Article by Lia Davis | Design by Takako Uehara

HOW TO PLAY This month’s feature pulled inspiration from a dart-throwing concept on a popular Japanese TV show. The centerfold features a removable map of Okinawa conveniently pinned with local suggestions to do, see, and explore. Secure the map to the wall, close your eyes, and launch a dart. Wherever it lands, we challenge you to do that suggested experience, check it off the list, and repeat! If you find the dart concept too aggressive, embark on your bucket list adventure with the assistance of the numbered pin guide (p. 30 - 31). Start chronologically, from 1 - 48, or try the inverse, 48 - 1. You can choose only odd or even numbers and alternate by week. Place the numbers in a jar, give it a shake, and draw a number. This challenge has a thousand different interpretations. You can be methodical or random. Get creative and get started! In its purest form, you are holding the world’s most achievable bucket list. The facilities of Kadena’s Force Support Squadron have done all of the heavy lifting; you simply show-up and enjoy.

From the vantage of Kadena as “home base,” we’ve chosen 360 degrees of adventure, with destinations reachable by foot, bicycle, vehicle, or boat. Take in the sweeping technicolor views from the Northern tip of Hedo Point or head an hour and a half south to the reflective and humbling Peace Memorial Park. Board a ferry to the Keramas and Ikei Islands just offshore to the East and West. The majority of our readers live in Central Okinawa. The thrill of Okinawan bullfighting is just a stone’s throw away in Ishikawa. ITT offers these tickets at discounted rates monthly. Collect little gifts from the sea at Seaglass Beach and incorporate your finds into a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork with some help from creatives at Arts & Crafts. Or get inspired with a trip to Yomitan’s Pottery Village and try your hand at ceramics with one of one of Arts & Crafts basic pottery classes.

As summer arrives and the thermostat outside climbs, put your SCUBA skills to work and break the surface with the help of Kadena Marina. Board the fabled Venture and dive Cape Maeda or Cape Zanpa. Need to get SCUBA certified? Kadena Marina will walk you through the entire process, from e-learning to equipment to skill development and graduation. Let this island challenge you to push your hiking endurance while nestled in the gorgeous backdrop of Fukugawa Falls. Stop by Karing Kennels for puppy life vests, performance leashes, and more so your furry friend can storm the trails alongside you. They may come in handy for spotting a curious Habu along your path! Strengthen your cycling stamina with weekday spin classes at the Risner Fitness Center. Then secure your GoPro camera and challenge yourself along the Motobu Peninsula or catch your breath at Heart Rock after a long ride around Kouri Island. Those long rides are hard on your bike. Take advantage of the bike station at ODR to keep your ride in top shape. Our network of experts will help you wring once-in-alifetime experiences from your short time on-island like a seasoned pro. Aim to conquer just three pins on this map. We guarantee, it won’t be enough. The more you see this island from the organic perspective of an explorer, the more respect this humble island demands. Find your new obsession and let Kadena FSS be your trusted teammate in Destination Okinawa.
