“ I’m all about motivating the team and seeing them succeed in whatever path they want to take. ”
New 18 FSS Director: THE ULTIMATE CHEERLEADER FOR SUCCESS
Article by Janelle Rivera
Design by Diana López Hansen
Having served his early military years in Okinawa, Japan, Blaine Miller never imagined setting foot on the island again, let alone returning as the new 18 Force Support Squadron Director.
Mr. Miller’s career path has been nothing but diverse. He went from being an Airman 1st Class ipping pancakes at the Marshall Dining Facility, “tee-ing” o at the golf course, coaching kids with Youth Sports, to landing a managerial role at the Shogun Inn leaving his own legacy.
With numerous experiences under his belt, Mr. Miller has nothing but pride in becoming a part of team Kadena. “Overseeing several programs across the FSS deepened my appreciation for the important work that its members carry out for the airmen and their families day in and day out,” he re ected.
After his term, he found himself back to his roots working alongside the military. “As I transitioned to the other side of the FSS fence, I witnessed programs and services evolve, which motivated me to want to help shape organizations with what I’ve learned and studied throughout the years,” he added.
Count on having the biggest cheerleader of Kadena FSS, who wants to see every single person on the team shine and compete for success. “I’m all about motivating the team and seeing them succeed in whatever path they want to take,” he emphasized. “Just as I strive for our customer’s happiness and satisfaction when they visit our facilities.”
The success of an organization lies within the little details and despite being far from home, his mission is to deliver “top-notch events and productions that make Kadena feel like home.”
Even though he views himself as a minor player on the team, he knows his role is crucial.
“Understanding what our team’s goals are is my top priority. When the team is happy and driven, they’ll naturally go above and beyond to serve our customers to the best of their abilities.”
Okinawa holds a special place in Mr. Miller’s heart – it is where his journey began, after all. “Kadena is my home,” he expressed sentimentally.
For him, taking on this role feels like being entrusted with the keys to a world-class championship team.

REHOMING THE HERMIES VENTURE | KADENAFSS.COM 19
Photos by Marina Chayka
Katie McGill, the Kadena Marina manager, and her team are dedicated to showcasing the importance of ocean conservation through various activities and methods they employ. “It’s our responsibility to spread awareness and enable the community to help clean the ocean and beaches from above and below the waters,” she emphasized.
Even more remarkable with what this team has done is repurposing the litter collected from in and out of the water, into art through buoy painting classes and various other activities.
In addition, initiatives such as beach cleanups play a crucial role and serve as an excellent opportunity to encourage children to always be mindful of ocean cleanliness and the preservation of marine species.
Okuma Beach hosts beach cleanups twice a year to spread awareness and inspire others to do the same. “Even though Okinawa is just a small dot on the world map, I rmly believe the little things we do make a di erence in our environment,” said Barry Thomas, Okuma Beach Outdoor Recreation manager.
These initiatives are no di erent when it comes to ensuring the safety of the participants. They are provided proper materials for their adventure ahead, to include gloves, boots, and trash bags. The sta ensures people have hats, sunscreen, and are hydrated for what’s to come.
Katie added, “We have harbor sta ready to respond to emergencies. Before any activity, we ensure participants receive a safety brie ng detailing what to do and what not to do for that speci c activity."
If you’re seeking to explore the island while making a positive impact, look no further. Kadena Marina and Okuma Beach are your adventure companions. They not only prioritize fun but also actively engage in community support. Both facilities excel at bridging the gap between purpose with enjoyment.
With the Kadena Marina, you can enjoy fun- lled programs like Ocean Explorers for sea creature discovery through crafts, experiments, and educational snippets. Dive into Coral Keepers for enjoyable beach cleanups, SUP Yoga, and other activities that make a di erence. Be a part of coral restoration in Coral Dive and dive deep to plant your own coral.
And if you prefer land, you can assist the Marina in Rehoming the Hermies as you learn more about what you can do to help protect and preserve the wildlife of the Ryukyu Islands. Afterwards, grab your paintbrush and beautify collected buoys as souvenirs.
Every detail counts with Kadena Marina, to include o ering eco-friendly products that prioritize the safety of both consumers and marine life. Kristen Romero, the Kadena Marina supervisory recreation assistant, emphasizes “avoiding harmful ingredients to preserve our ecosystems and keep families safe.”
Let Kadena Marina and Okuma Beach help you in making a tangible di erence in the world, one beach cleanup at a time. Embrace eco-initiatives as expressions of our deepest values and aspirations.

CULTURAL
Pottery Making
Rainy days?
Worry no more! The rain may start pouring but Okinawa will keep the fun alive even indoors. Enriched by its culture and plethora of traditions, art has become a signi cant aspect of Okinawa’s character.
Beyond the island’s artistic landscapes and cerulean waters, there lies a deeper passion for traditional art dating back to centuries ago. From the intricate origami to the delicate art of pottery, Okinawan artists have perfected each of their unique crafts over the years.
The ever-growing unique crafts are a re ection of the island’s rich history and heritage and is a testament of the abiding creativity and brilliance of its people.
This island’s endless di erent art forms are merely waiting to be explored. So, let’s embrace the rainy weather as the perfect opportunity to get our hands dirty and try the myriad of art forms this island has to o er.
Glass blowing has been a common craft practiced in many regions, yet Ryukyu glass holds a special place in Okinawa culture for its unique take on utilizing repurposed bottles from U.S. military bases during the earlier times. It was during the post-war era that craftsmen began collecting glass bottles, which would later be transformed into more colorful and di erently styled products.
For those interested in exploring a more ancient artistic tradition, consider giving Ryukyu bingata a try. It is a textile dyeing skill unique to Okinawa, with techniques originating from neighboring countries. This version of bingata features vibrant colors, perfectly representing Okinawa’s lively ambience.
Another art to try while on island is pottery. Use traditional methods, techniques, unique textures, and color schemes to create items re ecting the island’s deep blue oceans and architecture style. Similar to glass blowing and bingata, Okinawa’s pottery possesses its own unique characteristics not found elsewhere.
You might have tried it in school, but nowhere else will you nd the unique experience of Japanese paper folding, or origami, quite like here. While its origins may be unclear, origami has been used as part of ceremonies and rituals; however, many now engage in this artform, creating di erent shapes and forms from paper.
If you don’t know where to start, our FSS facilities o er tours and classes ready to be explored. Kadena ITT organizes trips to activities like glass blowing and bingata dyeling, while Arts & Crafts and Schilling Community Center host art, ower arrangement, and kimono tapestry sessions.
Make the most of your time here by exploring the beauty of Okinawa even indoors, away from the beaches.
