H
ey readers! Welcome back to our latest issue of Venture magazine. Summer is here, and we are beyond grateful you choose to read our publication each month to learn all about the fun going on right here at Kadena!
We all know one thing... it is hot! But, the FSS has plenty of options to stay cool this summer, starting with water sports! Check out Aquatics’ most recent How-to class on page 30 to learn about a new watersport. Or head over to Hagerstrom Pool and enjoy their updated summer hours! If you are more into ocean watersport adventures, the Sea Shack at Kadena Marina is now open! Check out page 31 to learn about the equipment rentals (stand-up paddleboards call your name? We think so!) or get a snack and enjoy the sunset.
However, if it is a vacation you are daydreaming about, Okuma Beach might be the oasis you need. Check out the Hai Sai event details on 12 June, or read all about their summer specials in the FSS Spotlight on pages 22 - 25. We know we might be biased in our love for Okuma, but the clear waters and delicious pizza speak for themselves. Don’t take our word for it; see for yourself!
We have not forgotten Father’s Day! The FSS is bursting with gift ideas and deals for Dad this holiday. Massage discounts at Risner, a special breakfast at the Rocker Enlisted Club, or a new brunch option with a BBQ twist at the Officers’ Club. We have tons of other activities in this issue, so be on the lookout for the best choice for the Dad in your life!
Stay tuned for updates about our Independence Day events as well. We have some details right here in Venture and will be updating our website, kadenafss.com, and our Facebook page with the most up-todate information!
As always, happy reading, be safe, follow your command’s directives, and keep venturing out!

The cabins feature space for four, with a bed and fold-out couch, in addition to private bathrooms and the cutest little porch to sit and enjoy a cup of coffee or to catch the sunset. These cabins are the perfect place to rest after a day full of adventures and good food. If you have never been, they are located close to the main gate of Okuma and are within walking distance to all of the recreational activities featured! The Ai Cottage is also available, but you will want to book fast! The cottage provides access to a private sandy beach, hot tub, and a privacy gate. Accessible by a golf cart and stowed away from the resort’s everyday activities, The Ai Cottage provides the ultimate romantic getaway.

T
he clearest blue waters, coupled with sandy beaches, a covered patio, the smell of fresh pizza, and we cannot forget the sounds of the ocean and good vibes. Does this sound like a place you want to be? Okuma Beach Resort, located just 51 miles north of Kadena Air Base, is our beautiful resort that will remind you of all the beauty this island has to offer. With summer ramping up and the kids out of school, there are plenty of options at Okuma for a family getaway, but with the beautiful Ai cottage and brand new Palm Grove Cabins, there are options for an intimate couples getaway, too!
RECREATION
Okuma offers a full-service Outdoor Recreation program! However, the staff is particularly excited about the new and improved dive program. Masayuki Nakama, Recreation Boat Operator for 30 years, also known as Capt Mabi, shared his favorite parts of Okuma with us. “I think some people are unaware of all of the wonderful sea life you can see here. There’re many different types of fish, and sometimes even sea turtles.” Capt Mabi also explained that you could take advantage of their beautiful sandy beaches, trips, caves, and views with the new and improved dive program! If you are looking to be more active in your water sports, they also have new single and two-person kayaks, in addition to stand-up paddleboards or Jet Skis. Diving points are a big attraction too. Okuma now offers English-speaking boat tours to diving points! Check out the two new spots. One southwest called Shippishi Drop and one north of Okuma called DIVE TRIP Cuttlefish Reef Oki-Ho.

OKUMA BEACH
If watersports are not on the docket for your trip, the resort has plenty of dry-land fun. There is a 9-hole golf course that provides beautiful views for a nice solo or team outing. We also have a mini-golf course that is challenging and fun for the whole family. It is located right by the Beach Mart, where you can pick up snacks, beverages, or some last-minute camping items. Yes, camping items! Beach camping is a fan favorite type of lodging available at Okuma. Sleeping under the stars with access to fire pits, grills, and the beautiful sounds of the ocean waves to put you to sleep is the way to go, at least once, during your time here. If you are worried about not having camping equipment, don’t be! Rentals for tents and equipment are available on site. While having access to BBQ grills is an excellent option for meals, be sure to add Surfside Grill & Bar to the schedule. We mentioned the pizza from the wood fire pizza oven, but the rest of the menu boasts delicious seafood, comfort foods, burgers, and desserts! Something for everyone is available.
Be sure to take pictures of the beautiful views and adventures while at Okuma, and tag us on Instagram @KadenaFSS!

e have loved tracking your adventures so far this summer, and please keep tag ging us! Some of our favorites this month are shown here. A “torii” gate is a spiritual symbol in Japanese culture. It usually adorns the entrance to a Shinto shrine and marks the transition from a mundane ground to a religious foundation. Located all over Japan, user @kelseypoje19 shared a beautiful image of one on Hamahiga Island, which is about a 45-minute drive from Kadena. Day trips to swimming pools across the island should be on all of our bucket lists this summer! Hotel Moon Beach, located in Onna, has one of the best! Thank you, @Zaydabarros, for sharing your adventure to the infinity pool! Venture reader @Michellewoz shared her adventure to Tokashiki Island with us! Her sweet kiddo is seemingly opening the door to luxur y on the other side. If all doors opened to beach and ocean views, sign us up! These cute doors are sprinkled all over Okinawa! Let us know if you see more! As always, be safe and follow your command’s directives, but keep tag ging us in your adventures. We love to see where our readers go! We might just feature you right here in the magazine.
We can’t wait to follow your adventures!

“Tsuyu”: Rainy Season by Meagan Abell
J
une is the month when Japan enters the rainy season, which is called “tsuyu.” The season starts south in Okinawa in early May and gradually travels north with the rain front through mid-June. Many of us might remember the saying “April showers bring May flowers,” but here in Okinawa, May showers bring June flowers! MayJune is also the season for hydrangea. Yohena Hydrangea Garden in northern Okinawa’s Motobu is a popular outing to see the beautiful blooms! The garden typically opens early to mid-May and stays open for tourists until late June. If you find yourself stuck inside due to gloomy weather and looking for ways to entertain your little ones this summer, here is a fun tradition you can share with your kiddos. “Teru teru bozu,” or the “rain rain go away” craft, is a doll handmade using white cloth to ward off rain! While the tradition originated with Japanese farmers hanging the dolls outside their windows, it has become a tradition with kiddos as they wish for sunshine in the summer months. The dolls, reminiscent of little white ghosts, may start popping up in windows in June, so be on the lookout!
