The [purpose] of Karate is to be strong, but [like a] gentleman and to have friends all over the world. Written By • Melissa Kowaluk | Photo by • Jana byrn

T

he Risner Fitness Center on Kadena Air Base offers a wide variety of classes, updated workout machines and equipment to best serve their customers. But did you know that Risner is also home to a Karate dojo? Sensei Koei Nohara has been teaching Karate at Risner for four years and teaches ages five and over. Sensei Nohara is native to Okinawa, the birthplace of Karate, and has been practicing the art passed down by his father for 63 years. He practices and teaches Shorin-ryu, Ryukyu-kobudo (weapons) and Full Contact. While Sensei Nohara has maintained the headquarter dojo in his Okinawa hometown, he has always tried to create a positive relationship with the local US military community. Not only has he taught at Kadena, but he has taught at Camp Kinser, and even taught at Camp Futenma during the Vietnam era. He is also the only one in his Ryukyukan organization who is qualified to promote anyone to a sensei or higher level black belt. Although Sensei Nohara has many responsibilities here, it does not stop him from traveling the world to teach and grow the Karate community. He’s taught in California, North Carolina, London, Paris, Belgium, India, Pakistan, Argentina and Chile to mention a few! He hopes to continue to visit new places each year. He explained that it’s exciting to travel and meet new people overseas

because they’re not just learning a martial art, they’re learning about Okinawan culture and traditions through Karate and taking it back to their part of the world. The same can be said about the Risner Dojo students with their diverse backgrounds. Karate is part of the identity of Okinawa that, through his guidance, he works to preserve and protect. Students of his can all say they learned Karate from its birthplace. As of 2016, there are 3.5 million people around the world who practice Karate. This martial art is deeply rooted in Okinawan culture and identity. It teaches discipline, hard work, persistence and respect, which are highly regarded qualities in Japan. Sensei Nohara mentioned that although Karate is great, it does not surpass family and friends in importance. “The [purpose] of Karate is to be strong, but [like a] gentleman and to have friends all over the world.” This Spotlight was a little different because one of Sensei Nohara’s students, MSgt Christopher Ward of the 353rd SOSS, reached out to us and requested that we highlight Sensei Nohara as a farewell gift. MSgt Ward is leaving Okinawa soon and wanted to thank Sensei Nohara for all that he’s done. This alone demonstrates the diligence and attention that Sensei Nohara pays to his students. MSgt Ward has been practicing Karate for 12 years and will take all he’s learned from Sensei Nohara and continue to practice in the future. If you’d like to give Karate a try, Sensei Nohara teaches Monday and Friday from 7 pm - 8:30 pm at the Risner Fitness Center. It’s never too late to learn a new art!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... public affairs

m

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn

any of the hard-working people at Public Affairs usually spend their days doing just this, interviewing and photographing those who are doing a great job to support their fellow Airmen and community. Their work does not go unnoticed and we wanted to give them a chance to be on the other side of the lens. SrA Quay Drawdy is one of the busy Airmen of Public Affairs who spends most of his time behind the camera. As a photojournalist journeyman, aside from having an awesome title, SrA Drawdy spends his days interviewing and photographing Airmen around the base being recognized for their work. He explained that “We never know what the day will look like!” It could be spent writing cool stories about his most recent interviewees, or unexpectedly setting up a photoshoot and escort for an incoming official. He added that because of its spontaneity, it’s a fun position despite being more taxing than it appears to be. Public Affairs makes many contributions to uphold and support the 18th Wing mission, one of which is telling stories of Airmen from all squadrons. By highlighting their contributions, they help boost morale and communicate the Commander’s message and intent to the people of Kadena. SrA Drawdy’s recent accomplishments include being selected to go back to school for broadcast and radio. But

in the end, “the stories I get to tell are my accomplishments,” explained Drawdy. He feels fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a unique environment that positively impacts his fellow Airmen as well as their families. On the other side of the Public Affairs building, Ms. Sayaka Higa, a Senior Community Relations Specialist, is hard at work communicating and strengthening the partnerships between Kadena Air Base and the Okinawa Defense Bureau, the local Japanese government. She communicates with the local government almost daily, coordinating and disseminating upcoming events. Kadena Air Base borders Chatan Town, Kadena Town and Okinawa City which all have different leadership and Ms. Higa keeps all of them in the loop when

[We] provide advice to Commanders to maintain and continue building community relationships. Communication is the key to success! there are events or exercises going on that may impact the local communities. Her role is essential to keep these communication channels open to avoid misunderstandings with our host nation. “[We] provide advice to Commanders to maintain and continue building community relationships. Communication is the key to success!” One such instance was when the Mayor of Kadena Town, Mr. Hiroshi Toyama, attended a KC-135 flight that was doing air-to-air refueling with an F-35. This visit took much coordination from Ms. Higa and was a big show of support from the local government, which strengthens our local ties. The Community Relations team is also responsible for organizing different volunteer opportunities for both the local and military community here. For example, she coordinates military members who teach English off-base as well as enlisting help for events such as the upcoming Dragon Boat Races. Ms. Higa added that one of the most rewarding parts of her job is bringing the two communities together to experience the differences in cultures. Flip open an issue of Samurai Gate, you may be surprised who you find being recognized! If you would like to submit someone for recognition, email 18wg.paphotosupport@kadena. af.mil.
