ey Readers, welcome to the March Venture! We are always grateful that you choose to pick up and read about events with us. March is a favorite month for us because it is the gateway to summer! Here in beautiful Okinawa, we get the best of both worlds — enjoyable Spring weather, with beaches and plenty of sun, and summer tourism, which will kick off a little later. Be sure to take advantage of discounts around the island, like the Sweet Cabana Deal at Okuma! (page 20) March also means Spring Break! If you are trying to decide what to do with your kids during their spring break from school, be sure to check pages 18 - 19 for a list of activities!

If you are looking for a new place to try for dinner, Kadena has added a ramen shop! The Ramen Bowl, conveniently located inside Emery Lanes, is open and ready for business. Read about what entails Ramen on pg 40 - 41, and all about what Emery Lanes has to offer in our FSS Spotlight on pages 30 - 33! We have tons of other options if you think March is the month you will explore outside. Outdoor Rec, Kadena Marina, and ITT all have great information about pandemic-friendly adventures that offer safe social distancing options as well as fresh air. Enjoy this issue of Venture Magazine, and remember, as you are venturing out, tag us on Instagram, @KadenaFSS, and use #Findsomethingspecial. We can’t wait to follow along, and potentially feature you right here!

e have been overwhelmed with all the beautiful images you have shared with us this month! Getting to experience the Cherry Blossom Season along with you was by far our favorite. Here are a few of the top picks from us. The best part of being on this amazing little island is getting out in nature and experiencing all the different seasons and all the beautiful colors that come with it! (Hydrangea fields, anyone?) Maybe next month we will feature (hint hint!) your favorite vending machines? If you see a beautiful hand-painted vending machine, be sure to let us know! We would love to feature it! This month we have a beautiful image shared with us on Instagram by user @VictoriaaKoch looking at the beautiful scenery that comes along with cherry blossom season. We don’t know what we love better, her cute style or the pretty blooms! Keeping it a family affair with his four-legged friend, Susie, we love that user @jdm0679 captured this precious picture! Her sweet face is complimented by the beautiful pink petals at the Nago Castle Ruins. As @Daniellereadslikealot walks through a tunnel of blooms, all we feel is envy! You can almost smell the florals and feel the breeze! Thank you for tagging us! As always, be safe and practice social distancing, and tag us to share your adventures!

We can’t wait to follow your adventures!

ES bowling center

by Meagan Abell

L

ocated right here on Kadena, Emery Lanes Bowling Center houses a little something for everyone! Recreation, (Have you heard of Clutch Bowling?) food, space for events, did we mention food? Also, a pro shop! Let’s start with the basics — bowling! Indoor, socially distant, you can have a team or go solo. Really, are there any downsides? Emery Lanes hosts leagues, so if you are looking to join, be sure to stop by and see about the requirements. The bowling center also offers great specials on Mondays for the Single Airman Program. From 5:30 - 9:30 pm, single airmen can get three games free, plus shoes! The Single Airmen Program is an excellent opportunity to wind down from busy workdays. You can reserve lanes, or you can pop in and see if they have availability, but a good time is guaranteed while you strive for that perfect score! Kelly Baumgardner, the manager of Emery Lanes Bowling Center, said that his favorite feature at the facility is Clutch Bowling, and let us tell you, he is not wrong! Half of the bowling center offers you an interactive experience with top-of-the-line graphics! Clutch bowling allows the player to cast images on the lane that are reactive to his or her bowling ball’s movement. Accessible by a phone app, you can send your ball blazing through the solar system like a rocket, crash it through blocks, knock over robots, or enjoy the flutter of flower petals. Whatever you choose, the imagery adds a fun element of interaction.

If you are looking at making the Emery Lanes a permanent fixture in your social rotation, you will need gear to go along with it. The facility offers a pro shop full of all your basic needs. If you are looking for the perfect weight and finger size for a customized ball, they can help you! Professional shoes and a sturdy bag to carry? Absolutely. The friendly staff is more than happy to assist in whatever you are looking for, whether you are a newbie or an experienced bowler. After all the shopping and bowling, you are sure to work up an appetite. Emery Lanes has two restaurants located on-site. With the ability to order right from your lane, Strikers Café can give you some of the best pub-style food. Burgers, chicken wings, a sandwich, or something smaller like mozzarella sticks or a pretzel. Baumgardner makes sure that every month they feature a unique burger! March is proudly showcasing a Breakfast Burger, but some past faves were the Peanut Butter and Jelly Burger or the Thanksgiving Sandwich. The newest feature for Strikers Café is online ordering! Head to KadenaFSS.com under the “Fun” tab to see how to place your order in advance to expedite pickup; there is even a space to put your vehicle description, and they will bring it to your car! The newest restaurant on Kadena recently opened its doors right inside Emery Lanes Bowling Center — the Ramen Bowl! With traditional Japanese lanterns and banners on the outside and ambient lighting inside, you will feel like you are stepping into your favorite ramen shop right in downtown Tokyo. They boast a classic yet straightforward menu with spicy miso broth or shoyu (soy sauce) broth. You can get the works with all the toppings or have them customize to order. The ramen is the perfect option for a hearty warm or spicy meal for dine-in or takeout. Whether you are using the bowling complex or not, stop in and experience this small pop of culture right here on Kadena. Baumgardner also explained that the event space is something more patrons should utilize! If you are looking for a location to host a birthday party, family event, work outing, opt for Emery Lanes! They offer space, food options, and recreation in a central location for convenience. Be on the lookout for the Kids Bowl Free® program this summer, as well as the Single Airmen specials going on right now!

Guide to by Meagan Abell

Ramen is a noodle soup dish that literally translates to “pulled noodles.” The dish is thought to have originated in China and was introduced to Japan in the 1660s. Traditionally, it consists of Chinese wheat noodles in a meat broth, typically flavored with miso (fermented soy bean paste) or soy sauce. However, nearly every region of Japan has its own variation of Ramen!

To Slurp or Not To Slurp?

Slurp away!!! When eating a big bowl of ramen at your favorite shop, should you go ahead and slurp your favorite noodles? Absolutely! While in America this might be considered bad table manners, in Japan, slurping and inhaling the aromas with your noodles is the correct way to enjoy ramen and most noodle dishes.

Noodles

The noodles in ramen contain four main ingredients: wheat flour, salt, water, and kansui which is a type of alkaline water. Kansui is the unique factor to ramen noodle recipes and adds the yummy yellow hue we recognize! However, in some regions such as Sapporo, the alkaline water is replaced with eggs, adding a chewy texture. As far as the structure of the noodles, it depends on the shop you are in! Some are long, short, skinny, wide, crinkled, or straight. What is your favorite type of noodle? Take a picture of it and tag @KadenaFSS!

Broth

Spicy? Salty? Full of Umami? What is your choice of broth? Fortunately, there are plenty of choices. Traditionally, broths come in one of four flavor profiles. Shoyu - A clear, brown broth with a chicken or vegetable base seasoned with soy sauce. Pork, beef, or fish flavors are added in some parts of Japan.

Toppings

Some common toppings on ramen: Corn (mostly on miso ramen) Chashu (sliced roasted or braised pork) Goma (sesame seeds) Menma (preserved bamboo shoots) Moyashi (bean spouts) Naruto (sliced steamed fish cake)

Shio - A clear, golden broth made of any combination of chicken, vegetables, fish, and seaweed and seasoned with salt.

Negi (green onion)

Miso - New to the broth flavor profiles it blends miso flavors, and chicken or fish broth and creates a hearty broth that compliments all your favorite toppings.

Ume (pickled plum)

Nori (dried seaweed) Tamago (soft-boiled or marinated hard-boiled egg)

Tonkotsu - A thick, white pork stock-based broth often flavored with chicken stock, vegetables, and/or pork fat.
