Sip, Savor,

You’re at a fancy restaurant with a fancy dress on, your partner is looking dapper, and a juicy steak is on your plate. e only thing missing is a drink in your hands, but you’re not sure what type of wine to get. Awkwardly, you call on the waiter and ask for recommendations that would go perfectly with your food.

Have you caught yourself in a similar situation? Worry no more! is article will provide you with proper wine etiquette and food pairings for di erent types of wine to prepare you for your next fancy dinner, cocktail with friends, or for Kadena’s Wine Fest this month!

Wine has accompanied the culinary delights around the world for millennia. It is known for its nutritional properties, taste, and the social culture it creates. From whites to reds and Rosé, endless complexities and avor pro les deliver an earthy punctuation to any meal or social experience. e journey or turning grapes into wine is a detailed and controlled chemistry experiment.

How it’s made

Remember watching TV shows with people pressing on a bucket of grapes with their bare feet? Well, that’s one way to make wine; however, there are now machines to do just that in today’s day and age. First and foremost, grapes are destemmed before getting pressed lightly or fully, depending on the type of wine being made. It then goes through the fermentation process where wine gets its alcohol content along with other additives such as sweeteners, artificial colors, and more. Prior to putting the final product in bottles and corks, wine goes through the maturation or aging process where gallons of wine are poured inside oak barrels for a certain amount of time. This helps the wine reach its full maturity; resulting in a smoother and perfect taste.

How to drink

Now, for the fun part! Drinking wine is art in itself. It is an experience one should remember as it contains so much more than just taking a sip. Look like a pro with these tips when you go to the upcoming Wine Fest! When drinking a glass of wine, hold the stem with your thumb and index finger as you support the base with the rest of your fingers. As you raise your hand towards your lips and mouth, make sure to not gulp it down. Savor the taste and take your time by slowly taking a sip of the drink. Enjoy every drop and appreciate the beauty of how it was made.

Food pairing

Now that you know how to drink wine properly, let’s learn about the perfect food pairings. Wine pairs with certain types of food to bring its natural, harmonious flavors and aroma. Each wine’s food counterpart will help you enjoy your drink and food a lot better. Enhance your dining experience with this list of perfect wine and food combinations.

•Red wine is paired perfectly with any red meat, cheese, pasta with red sauce, chocolate, and pizza as they all complement the dark and sweet flavor of the drink.

•White wine is paired perfectly with seafood and chicken to complement the wine’s lemon-like taste and brightens the flavors of the food.

•Rosé is paired perfectly with cheesy dishes, grilled fish, and fresh salad as they complement both its acidity and fruitiness taste.

•Sparkling wine is paired perfectly with roasted vegetables, fish, fried, and salty food to complement its sweetness and carbonation making it a tastefully balanced combination.

•Dessert wine is perfectly paired with sweet desserts or salted caramel desserts that complement the sweetness of the drink.

¡Salud!

Now that you’re ready, it’s time to wine down on this year’s two-day Wine Fest! Enjoy wine samples from around the world while matching their avor pro les with the perfect food pairings lovingly prepared and presented by the Kadena Enlisted Club’s talented culinary team! Take in the ambiance of live music and great company! Save the date and secure your tickets before they sell out! Tickets are still on sale at the Enlisted Club customer service counter.

*Please drink responsibly.

Road to Mt. Fuji

Is climbing Mt. Fuji on your bucket list? Join us this summer for our annual trip!

Preparation Tips:

•Limit caffeine & alcohol 24 hours prior.

•Get lots of sleep (at least 8 hours).

•Acquire proper equipment.

•Make sure to pack necessities only; avoid “nice to have” supplies.

•AVOID OVER PACKING.

•Keep the weight in your backpack to no more than 5 pounds. A heavy pack will overtax you and cut off blood circulation in your limbs. Less weight means better balance.

•Consume high-protein foods in light weight packages rather than cans.

Check out this page next month for the supply checklist!

Paperwork Reminder

Just a friendly reminder from your Shogun Auto Care Center to always make sure all your paperwork is current. You can be ticketed, fined, or may lose your license if you are ever stopped with an obsolete paperwork. Visit or call us if you need assistance.

If you catch yourself with a drained car battery due to long term parking or accidentally leaving the lights on, jumper cables or jump boxes will get you moving again in no time. A jumper cable draws power from another vehicle to inject power into a dead battery while a jump box initiates the process itself. These items deserve a permanent space in the vehicle of any responsible car owner. Hina Matsuri & Sanshin no Hi ひな祭り&三線の日

This month’s Cultural Corner contains not just one, but two traditional observances. These two festivities take place the day after one another, which generates a busy week for most households. “Hina Matsuri,” also known as Girls’ Festival or Doll Festival, is celebrated in dedication to the girls in the family, while Sanshin Day is celebrated throughout the island where thousands of sanshin performers gather around and play festive music.

Hina Matsuri is celebrated annually on March 3 where parents offer prayers for good health, safety, and happiness for their daughters. Observance of this festival is celebrated in many ways, depending on the area you live in. Some display a set of Hina dolls in their homes – like what you see in stores – to protect girls from accidents and diseases. These dolls dressed in detailed traditional Japanese attire are commonly known to absorb bad luck and misfortune and would later get thrown away after being displayed for a short period of time. Some regions, though, hang small handmade dolls in strings for the same purpose; for children to grow up happy, healthy, and disease-free. Another custom is throwing paper dolls into a river as a way of releasing away bad luck; this process is called “Nagashi Bina.” No matter how you commemorate Hina Matsuri, girls and daughters will surely be safe and protected.

What’s a Japanese festival without food! Hina Matsuri is prepared with special traditional food, each representing something beneficial for girls. A few of the Japanese classic foods consist of amazake, chirashizushi, and hina arare. Amazake, or “sweet alcohol,” is a fermented glutinous rice drink containing one percent alcohol, which is considered safe for children to consume. This drink is known to cleanse your body of anything bad that may come your way. Chirashizushi is a type of sushi containing ingredients that may benefit one’s life positively, making it a perfect dish to devour. Lastly, Hina Arare is a colorful rice cracker dish with each color representing life (pink), nature (green), and earth (white).

Sanshin

Hina Dolls

Amazake

The day after Hina Matsuri is yet another holiday to be celebrated: Sanshin no Hi or Sanshin Day. This holiday can be easily observed wherever you are in the world; however, it is best to experience the festivities first-hand here in Okinawa. Sanshin is a musical instrument considered to be the soul of Okinawan music dating back to the 15th century. It is a long necked threestringed banjo-like instrument usually covered with snakeskin. It is used in Okinawan folk songs and even in modern music.

If you are curious as to how it sounds, you can hear Sanshin’s warm and rustic tone fill the air of the Ryukyu Islands on March 4 as thousands of performers, dancers, and musicians fill the streets in their traditional attires.

As I mentioned above, Sanshin Day can be celebrated anywhere in the world by simply listening to sanshin music online as you remember your time here on the island.

Be on the lookout for the Hina dolls in shopping areas. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up buying one for the girls in your family. If you are wanting to experience and witness Sanshin Day where it is widely celebrated, don’t forget to tag us, @KadenaFSS! We would love to see you embracing the Okinawan life.

CHILD DEVELOPMENT CENTERS

When a Parent Deploys

Military separation is difficult for both parent and child. However, children are resilient. How well children cope can be influenced largely by how parents handle the separation. During the separation, children need to feel secure and loved even with only one parent in the home. Learn coping strategies to help the family as a whole through separation.

Employee Spotlight

Leslie Serna

Ms. Leslie Serna, a toddler teacher at the Wakaba CDC, has worked with children for 13 years. Ms. Serna has single-handedly worked countless hours on improving her overall classroom environment to meet and prepare for the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) re-accreditation. She has embraced the Early Learning Matters (ELM) Curriculum and NAEYC standards where she ensured daily enrichment for the kids. Ms. Serna stated, “I absolutely love this age group. I think it’s the perfect age to help a child grow and blossom. I often visit the Virtual Lab School and other resources and tools to make sure I can continue to support children’s personal, academic, and social development. I look forward to caring for children and making my room a home away from home.”
