PCS Season is coming! Boarding Services

PCS Checklist

Your animal is safe in the hands of Karing Kennels! If you are PCS’ing onto the island, you will want a comfortable place for them to go through quarantine. We offer personalized boarding plans so you know Spot is getting medication, his special food, or extra love he needs to thrive!

Grooming Services Nothing is more exhausting than a long flight, and we are sure your pets agree! Help rejuvenate them after the flight with a grooming session to wash away all those travel germs. About to fly out? Make sure your fur babies are prepared by getting their nails clipped and ears cleaned so they can fly in comfort.

This is a brief overview of the PCS process and is only applicable to dogs and cats. For more detailed instructions, visit the Karing Kennels webpage at KadenaFSS.com.

IN 1. Start this process as early as possible! 2. Make sure your dog has a microchip. 3. Have two valid rabies vaccinations 30 days apart 4. Get a FAVN test 5. Wait 180 days before coming to Japan to avoid quarantine.

OUT 1. Make sure you check where you are going next. Note: PCS’ing with pets outside of returning to continental USA can change things. 2. Get a health certificate near your travel date. This certificate lasts 10 days from when it is issued. 3. Make sure you have a valid rabies certificate. 4. If flying commercial, go to Naha to have your pet and paperwork inspected at least 24 hours prior to your flight. 5. If PCS’ing to anywhere outside of the continental USA, make sure to contact the Kadena Vet. It can take up to six months to prepare for!

Mt. Fuji, or Fuji-san, has been a source of wonder and spirituality for many generations. Its unrivaled magnificence and volcanic origins has enchanted many hikers, tourists and locals alike. It sits at 3,776 meters high and boasts a unique snowcapped, cone-like shape that has been a symbol of Japan and has inspired artists for many years. Around the 20th century it became a popular destination for people from all over the world to hike. One of the most sought-after experiences is called Goraiko, where travelers hike during the night to reach the summit at sunrise.

Are your dash lights on? You should have them checked as soon as possible, especially if it’s a yellow warning light or a red danger light. If you see a blue light, don’t worry - it comes on when you first start your car and will turn off once the vehicle is warm. If the temperature light changes to red then you need to have your cooling system checked.

RECREATION

The maintenance teams works hard throughout the day to ensure the courses stay green and beautiful Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photo by • Jana byrn

Kadena Air Base has not one, but two beautiful golf courses ready for everyone to enjoy. The greens are smooth and perfectly cut for the golf ball to glide along toward the hole. I always drive by the golf course and think about just how much work it takes to upkeep the greens and keep them primped and primed for all golfers. Well, this month I headed over to the Banyan Tree Golf Course and spoke to the maintenance staff to learn more about what they do. Shinichi Tamashiro, the Maintenance Foreman and Okinawa native, has been working for the Banyan Tree Golf Course for almost 30 years. He has a staff of about 16 people who work to maintain beautiful 18 hole greens on Kadena. Tamashiro-san’s favorite part about his job is finding the best methods for growing grass, which includes finding the best seeds, learning the best times to water it and working with the elements to ensure it grows at a good rate. He has met many Greenkeepers over the years and has

32 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

enjoyed making connections with people from all over the world. Hironaga Maekawa has been the Tractor Operator at the Chibana Golf Course for 26 years. He has also enjoyed meeting people from many places, but his favorite memory is when he helped build the green at Chibana Golf Course in 1989. Between Tamashiro-san and Maekawa-san and their amazing team, they work day and night to ensure they provide the best for their customers. They take pride in their hard work and love seeing the green look beautiful. Their job comes with some unavoidable obstacles, particularly with the weather during typhoon season. They understand that people have been cooped up in their houses and would like to go out and play as soon as possible, so the maintenance team works quickly to recover the courses as well as they can so their customers can get out and play. Next time you head to the courses, thank the maintenance staff!

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF... Bioenvironmental engineering flight

Written By • Melissa Kowaluk Photos by • Jana byrn

Did you take a drink of water today? Then you’ve already been directly affected by the hard work of those over at the 18th Aerospace Medicine Squadron, Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight. They work tirelessly to keep everyone safe and healthy by maintaining safe drinking water on base, along with many other duties. They’re not only responsible for Kadena Air Base, but also for DoD housing throughout Okinawa from Camp Kinser in the south to Okuma Beach in the North. TSgt Raymond Madayag, originally from 36 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

the Philippines, and SrA Rodulfo Castro, from Bakersfield, California, explained that the overall goal for the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight is to be preventative instead of reactive when it comes to health. “By having clean drinking water, we are keeping people healthy, which keeps them ready to fight tonight,” said SrA Castro. “We are preventing health issues that may arise if we aren’t doing our jobs correctly.” The Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight, which

is part of the larger Medical Group has wide reaching responsibilities. Their flight is made up of 23 people who work together to collect data and use the findings to act accordingly. They collect an average of 110 water and air samples per month, including organic compounds, metals, and pesticides. SrA Castro and TSgt Madayag showed me the water lab, where they run the tests on the water samples. They explained that they are sent samples of various types of contaminated water to compare their water findings to and ensure that the water does not contain any dangerous bacteria. One of their other focuses include occupational health, which entails ensuring that everything is in place so workers aren’t being exposed to anything hazardous to their health such as radiation, welding fumes, and paint vapors. This includes both ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, which I learned is the difference between x-rays, radio frequency radiation, and high-powered lasers. This is especially important with groups such as the Maintenance Group who are frequently working around the many hazards associated with aircraft operations. As the temperatures rise going into summer, it is important to know the danger conditions of the heat stress outside. They use the WBGT (wet bulb globe temperature) gauge to measure the heat stress conditions during summer months. They then send their findings to Command Post, who disseminate it to the public. When you see the black flag outside of the Risner Fitness Center, it indicates the WBGT is over 90 degrees and is not ideal for outside activity. You may

By having clean drinking water, we are keeping people healthy, which keeps them ready to fight tonight also see these alerts go out on your government computers. This is another way in which the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight takes action. One of their most recent large projects was the Kadena Middle School, which opened in February. They worked hard with the contractors that built the structure to make sure the water was safe before opening the school. They met their deadlines, the school opened on time, and the kids have clean drinking water! “We’re sometimes in the background, but the health of everyone on the base is in our foreground.” Major Andrew Bostic of the Bioenvironmental Engineering Flight wanted to give the 18th Civil Engineer Squadron, Water & Fuels Systems Maintenance Flight a special shoutout. They are responsible for the more physical part of maintaining the water systems, and without them, Major Bostic and his team would not be able to complete their part of the mission. Thanks to this awesome team, our bases don’t have to worry about having clean water to drink. As we head into the summer months it is even more important to stay hydrated and heed their heat stress warnings to stay safe and healthy! oms make the world go ‘round - I can’t imagine many would disagree with me. They are our strongholds and the source of the most unconditional love around. Sure, sometimes you have your differences, but you know at the end of the day they love you no matter what. This month we are celebrating moms with open arms! We put together a Facebook contest where moms could enter themselves and their kids to be on the cover of May Venture. Our lucky winners were Kylie Tate and her 8-month-old son Bennett, and Emy and Justine Reyes and their almost 1-year-old daughter Elsa. Kylie is from Kentucky and Emy and Justine are from Hawaii. We had a wonderful time playing in the sunshine and letting these beautiful ladies be models for a day!

Military life can sometimes be extremely hard. Constant change, unpredictable schedules, late nights and early mornings. Although I’m not yet a mom myself, I can certainly see how being a mom in military life can be extremely taxing. Whether they stay home, go to work, or put on a uniform every morning, it doesn’t change how much we should all appreciate moms from all walks of life. They are the biggest cheerleaders and the best shoulders to cry on. I have many friends who have little ones, and I admire them every day. It’s easy to see that they and surely all moms would do absolutely anything to make their child the best they can be. There is always something to learn from someone else, and I will definitely take the advice of the awesome women here for my own future. Can you think of your favorite times with your mom? I have so many sweet memories with mine that it’s hard to choose! One that instantly comes to mind was when we were still living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and we would have big family gatherings in a nearby town called Pilar, that we’d have to reach by train.

38 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

This was no luxury train – it was very run down and crammed with people, but still an adventure to me. My mom made it so fun – she would buy my favorite snack, we’d count the houses passing by and play “I Spy.” During summertime once we moved to the US, we’d stay up watching House Hunters or What Not to Wear on HGTV. Inevitably, we’d get hungry and make a snack – we even made a complete steak and pasta dinner at midnight once! I’ll never forget all of the wonderful memories that I have made with my mom. Some say that as you age you begin to understand the sacrifices that you took for granted growing up, and you gain a new perspective. I definitely fall into that category! My mom is more than my mom now, she’s one of my best friends. This Mother’s Day, if you have the luxury of having your mom close by, give her all the love she deserves, and if she’s far away, make sure to give her a call or send a gift to make her feel extra special. Mother’s Day is a great reminder to take a step back and think about the awesome contribution that moms have to all families. This year, Mother’s Day is on Sunday, 13 May so don’t forget!
