EDITOR’S

Note

May Fitness Month has arrived, and with it comes a variety of athletic classes to check out. Pages 32-33 provide more information on the different events you can take part in. Make sure to stop by the Risner Fitness Center and grab a punch card. For every five classes you attend, you can submit your punch card for a chance to win prizes! May also brings some welcome sunshine back to Okinawa. So, now is the time to hit the beach! The best part of living in Okinawa, in my opinion, is living it up on the beach. Join us at the Kadena Water Expo on 18 May for some fun in the surf and sun and take one of our awesome rental items like kayaks and jet skis out for a spin. Find out more information on page 27! If you want even more beach fun in your life, Okuma’s Battle on the Beach is happening on 26 May. Make sure to snag a campsite or room and watch as six live bands battle it out on our own little slice of paradise.

SPACE-A TRAVEL

Space-Available travel is a valuable resource to military families, especially for residents of Okinawa. We all know how expensive a flight back home can be, and Space-Available travel can mitigate that cost. Below are some important basics to know before attempting to fly Space-A Flights are available to service members, retirees, and their families Reservists, National Guardsmen, and unaccompanied dependents are only allowed to fly if they meet certain qualifications Active Duty service members are only able to use Space-A flights while on active leave You are not guaranteed a flight in either direction so make sure you have enough funds to return to your base via a commercial flight before your leave ends There are six different Space-A categories. To ensure those most in need are assisted, seats are filled sequentially

You are cordially invited to celebrate the 2019 graduates of the Community College of the Air Force. The ceremony will be held at the Rocker Enlisted Club with a reception to follow. Military guests of the graduates may wear the uniform of the day.

When preparing for your Space-A flight make sure that you have all of the required travel documents such as passport, leave orders, and your military identification. You will also need to fill out AMC form 140 (the Space Available Travel Request) and e-mail it to the AMC passenger terminal. For more information about the details of Space-Available travel, check out the class offered by the Airman & Family Readiness Center. More information is available by calling 634-3366 or on page 16.

THREATS IN THE TIDES WRITTEN BY • ELIZABETH BRYAN | ABOVE IMAGES BY • RYAN HANNAN

Blue-Ringed Octopus If anyone needed a reminder that some of the most beautiful creatures can be the most deadly, the blue-ringed octopus is an extreme example. Despite its beauty and small size, this creature’s venom contains a powerful neurotoxin. The blue-ringed octopus carries enough venom to kill 26 adult humans within minutes. Their bites are small and often painless. If you have been affected, you may not realize it until the symptoms set in. If you accidentally come into contact with one, seek immediate medical care and call emergency services. Be aware when enjoying the shores of Okinawa, as they can be found in tide pools and close to shore.

Crown-of-Thorns Starfish The crown-of-thorns starfish lives primarily in and around coral reefs. While you are unlikely to encounter this starfish except while diving or snorkeling, it pays to be wary. An injury caused by the crown-of-thorns causes an instantaneous sharp pain. This pain may last several hours and is often accompanied by continuous bleeding, nausea, and swelling. Some of these symptoms can continue for over a week. While the venom is unlikely to be deadly, it is certainly best to avoid close encounters with this creature. If you do happen to be injured by a crown-ofthorns starfish, exit the water and seek immediate treatment as some reactions may cause paralysis.

Scorpion Fish Scorpion fish can be found in coral reefs and shallow waters around Okinawa. Their spines are coated in a venomous mucus that can cause intense pain and is sometimes lethal. Many different types of fish that are classified as scorpion fish. The most well-known fish of this type is the Stonefish (pictured below). The stonefish is one of the most venomous fish in the world and a sting can result in death if not treated. Many types of scorpion fish rely on camouflage to hunt prey. You may not notice them while swimming if you are not wary. It is always safest to wear foot protection while swimming in un-netted areas or while snorkeling or diving in Okinawa. If you are injured by any variety of scorpion fish, call emergency services after exiting the water.

The oceans of Okinawa are beautiful and we encourage you to get out and explore. There are tons of beautiful sea creatures you can encounter while swimming, snorkeling, or diving in areas around the island. However, it is critical that you stay alert while in the water and know what creatures to admire from afar. If you believe you have been injured by any sort of venomous sea life, exit the water immediately call emergency services for advice. The ocean is full of beautiful and unusual creatures, explore it - just be alert and informed!

Military Spouses & Military Mothers

Written by Emily McNulty

A military spouse is adaptable. We adapt

to each place we move, find new jobs, schools, hair dressers, dentists, and more. If you have children, you also become a single parent during TDYs, training, and of course deployments. We do our best to keep routines in place for our children as well as for us and our sanity.

Moving so often can take a toll. It is wonderful to see some of the amazing places the military can send you. Places like Japan and Hawaii are beautiful areas to live. Living our lives in so many different places brings both incredible experiences and hardships. Each time a move is made you must say goodbye to your friends who you may never be stationed with again. While developing new friendships once you PCS is never easy, the benefit of these new friendships is that military spouse friends are also the best friends! Having someone who truly understands your life and your struggles can make a huge difference in turning your new base into your new community. I married my husband in 2010 and Okinawa is our sixth duty station. We have been stationed in: Roanoke, VA; Fort Sill, OK; Kaneohe Bay, HI; Annapolis, MD; and Montgomery, AL. Okinawa is our second OCONUS duty station, since Hawaii is also considered OCONUS. I have been a Mom for over 2 years; my son was born December 26, 2016, while we were stationed at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Becoming a first-time mom is difficult, and being

a Military Spouse also has challenges, and being both can sometimes feel impossible. Moving overseas was a big adjustment. Beyond the time difference and driving on the other side of the road, there was the difficulty of living in a hotel with our toddler while organizing our move into on-base housing. Living our lives so far away from the help and support of family was also difficult. But, we have come to love our new island home.

As hard as this life can be, our neighborhood and our cul-de-sac makes life easier. We live on a quiet street with about a dozen neighbors and limited traffic, which is perfect for all the young running kids! It’s as close to perfect as it can be! A good neighborhood and good friends can truly make each new base feel like home. My neighborhood is a great mix of Marine Corps, Army, Navy, and Air Force families with and without children. Each afternoon, we enjoy the outdoors with our children. The kids play and the moms talk. It may seem simple, but it makes a world of difference to have someone to talk to, vent with, hug, or drink a glass of wine with. We often have bonfires, Friendsgiving, and nightly get-togethers. It is the simple things, like getting home from work and being able to run inside to make dinner while your friends watch your kids for 15 minutes, that make Okinawa feel like home. If our husbands or wives are gone, we all know and are

30 FOR ADDITIONAL PROGRAMMING PLEASE VISIT KADENAFSS.COM

happy to watch one another’s kids play together outside to give a Mom a break. Even a quick break can make all the difference. I’m so happy I get to live in my neighborhood and on Okinawa. While some of my neighbors are PCSing this summer, I’m so glad they were my neighbors and we became friends. Times like these remind you that military life presses on and friends move, but we are lucky to have such strong people to lean on wherever our travels take us. I have learned to appreciate the small breaks. The small gestures of kindness, the glass of wine, the meal already cooked, and the hug that was desperately needed that day. All of these things make being a Military Spouse a joy I wouldn’t give up for the world. It is the military community that makes me certain that no matter where I travel, there are friends to be made and a home to be built.

A DAY IN THE LIFE...

18th CONTRACTING Squadron The 18th Contracting Squadron performs a critical role in supporting the Wing mission. We spoke with some of the diligent workers who make up this small but powerful squadron to learn more about their responsibilities and efforts to support the base. SrA Anthony Leander, Ms. Bea Muranaka, and A1C Solomon Ocansey all perform essential tasks to ensure Kadena AB, and the bases around us, receive the supplies, personnel, and buildings needed to complete the Wing mission. SrA Leander is a contract specialist who recently worked with special forces to complete a contract for an important training exercise. Ms. Muranaka is responsible for many of the contracts effecting homes around base like refuse and recycling pick-up and the supplies found at Eagle Hardware. A1C Ocansey is responsible for executing many of the medical contracts, for personnel and supplies alike. These three people serve as an excellent example of the breadth and reach of the 18th Contracting Squadron. We come into contact with the work of these individuals every single day. SrA Anthony Leander, a Contract Specialist, spends most of the day meeting with contractors and mission partners throughout the base. His responsibilities include reading through the contracts and specifications needed to complete requests. Anthony mentioned how much he enjoys seeing a contract through to the end. Getting to see the effect his work has on people’s lives, such as going to see a new building after it is completed and seeing people use it, brings SrA Leander joy. “Whatever they need, we try to help them get as quickly as possible. We help people get their mission done and enable other people to be able to do what they need to do.” SrA Leander recently attended a joint contracting exercise with the Army. They went on a mock deployment to practice important skills they need when they deploy.

Whatever they need, we try to help them get as quickly as possible. We help people get their mission done and enable other people to be able to do what they need to do. Ms. Bea Muranaka is a civilian employee who oversees many of the contracts everyone comes into contact with regularly. She organizes the contracts for Municipal Solid Waste (refuse), recycling, and Eagle Hardware. These contracts are vital for the smooth operation of bases in Okinawa. Eagle Hardware provides a variety of supplies that on-base residents can pick up to improve and maintain their homes. Items include things like light bulbs, vent filters, and so much more. Ms. Muranaka also announced that Eagle Hardware will soon carry paint for individuals to pick up for use in homes across the base. This is news that any on base resident should be excited to hear! Her efforts in the different contracts for Eagle Hardware do a lot to make base assigned houses feel more like a home. Bea, when asked what their office motto was, responded “keep smiling.” The positive atmosphere of their work environment was obvious during our short time there. We also had the opportunity to talk to A1C Solomon Ocansey, who is responsible for administering contracts for the medical team. When asked about his responsibilities, Solomon remarked “Coming from the civilian world, I know how painful it can be for doctors to not get what they need to perform their job. I take a lot of pride in doing this.” The initial implementation of a new contract takes months to accomplish and

FOR OPEN POSITIONS, PLEASE VISIT NAFJOBS.ORG AND USAJOBS.GOV

seeing it through to completion is also a source of joy for A1C Ocansey. He is also aware of how important his job is and spoke of the satisfaction of knowing that a contract he worked on may save someone’s life. While a lot of the work of the 18th Contracting Squadron takes place in the background, the medical contracts worked on by A1C Ocansey, and others, are an excellent reminder of the importance of their work. A1C Ocansey recently worked with a special operations group as well. As with many contracts, he won’t know exactly when or how they will use the supplies he helped them acquire, but he knows how important it is for our troops to be adequately supplied.

I know how painful it can be for doctors to not get what they need to perform their job. I take a lot of pride in doing this. The 18th Contracting Squadron facilitates the military acquisition process to purchase what it needs to complete the mission. Without their efforts, it would be nearly impossible to receive anything because the government buys almost everything via contracts. Although they are a small group, CONS affects everyone’s life on some of the bases across Okinawa as an integral part of the wing mission. This squadron serves as a support and backbone to other squadrons all across base. So, the next time you stop by Eagle Hardware, visit the clinic, put out your trash, or enter a new building - take a moment to think of the efforts of the 18th Contracting Squadron.
