EDITOR’S

Note

Welcome to Venture magazine! Let me first start by saying this is a crazy time we are in, and we at the Force Support Squadron want to thank all of you for your unwavering support of our wonderful facilities and programs. We are trying our best to continue to serve you to the best of our ability during this challenging time. You may notice some facilities are offering less programming, or some facilities may be missing from the magazine altogether. I can assure you we are working diligently to provide all the fun we can! May means Memorial Day weekend, and that’s one of my favorite holidays. Back home in Indiana, I would spend it at the lake! Pending changes to restrictions, an arguably better option is grabbing some rental gear from the Kadena Marina, and snorkeling, kayaking, and paddleboarding in the turqoise waters surrounding us. Explore a trail with Outdoor Recreation, or try one of their new cycling excursions! Along with Memorial Day, there is also Military Spouses Appreciation Day! Several of our facilities are offering specials just for spouses. Catch them on pg. 19! Mother’s Day is also in May, and we have tons of specials to cater to all the wonderful moms out there. Check out pgs 36 & 37 to get some gift ideas! We also want to keep experiencing the beauty of Okinawa in a safe way, so for this month’s cover we checked out Futenma Shrine. I encourage you to read up on everything Okinawa has to offer, and I promise if you’re feeling stir crazy there are tons of activities you and your family can do while still protecting your health. We hope you find inspiration in this month’s Venture magazine!

You have the chance to win cash by finding a special phrase each month! The phrase changes each month. For May, find:

“HAI SAI HELLO SUMMER”

on a page inside “Venture” and scan the QR code below to let us know. You could add some green to your wallet while learning about all of the great things happening throughout May with Kadena Force Support Squadron.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day Café Latte Friday • 8 May 10:30 am - 2 pm Free combo upgrade for any AF Club member military spouse during lunch.

It is a tricky thing, to try to maintain your own bravado, drive, and passions in life when you are with someone who made a commitment to something much bigger than I can honestly wrap my mind around. I think military spouses deserve a moment of recognition. For the missed holidays, anniversaries, and birthdays, as well as managing children’s schedules solo at times- while trying to stay strong for the family and their spouse- is extremely mentally taxing. Add in the stigma of being a dependent, of sitting at home watching Bravo all day in our sweatpants, and it can be an uphill battle. Military spouses are some of the most creative, resilient, hard-working people I know, and I am proud to be considered one. While I scoff the lifestyle at times, I truly can’t picture my life any other way. Friday, 8 May, is this year’s national Military Spouse Appreciation Day. Several facilities are having sales and specials, to recognize those men and women who committed to such a tumultuous life without signing on the line to serve themselves. Their duty, their responsibility to their spouse, comes from a place even stronger than honor- it comes from a place of love.

Being a military spouse is arguably one of the hardest things I have ever done. Obviously, our spouses and their commitment to defending our country is unbelievably honorable, but I really did get a whole new appreciation for this crazy military lifestyle when I married into it in 2017. As a military spouse, you are at the whim of your spouse’s job. My husband has been known to be gone seven months out of the year, and when he is home, he works long, stressful hours. I often eat dinner alone, manage grocery shopping, attempt to have some semblance of a social life, and try to support him the best I can. This is not to say that military spouses are saints or any special breed. We are simply spouses who committed ourselves to our significant other, knowing our significant other was already in a relationship with the military. I consider myself to be fiercely and stubbornly independent, but never have I been brought to my knees as often as this lifestyle has brought me.

OKI CAR TIP

r e t n e C r i Repa

Auto Hobby isn’t just for car enthusiasts! Did you know that Auto Hobby can take care of routine maintenance and 90% of your repair needs? Because this month has Military Spouse Appreciation Day, we wanted to focus on all the ways Auto Hobby can help spouses (or anyone!) out in a bind. “We do pretty much everything, just like any garage,” said Michael Francis, the service manager for Auto Hobby.

CLASSES Oki 101 Class

Wednesday • 6 May • 5 pm

One program Auto Hobby offers in partnership with the Airmen and Family Readiness Center is “Car Care Because We Care.” The program is specifically for people whose spouses are deployed for more than 30 days. If you bring in a copy of your spouse’s orders, you can receive a free oil change and a mini safety inspection. Auto Hobby will also offer spouses of deployed members a free tow to the garage if needed. I know without fail, whenever my spouse goes TDY something goes wrong on my Oki car. Auto Hobby can help! “They can have peace of mind that their car is in good condition while their spouse is deployed,” Francis said.

If you’re interested in learning about your vehicle to try to tackle issues on your own, Auto Hobby offers classes. They can teach you how to check your fluids, undercarriage inspections, change tires, and walk you through the JCI process if you want to do it alone. “People can become familiar with what they’re looking for when they check their fluids, where it’s at, and what they’re looking for,” Francis said. They can also handle the entire JCI process for you if you want it to be stress-free! Auto Hobby is also now open for repairs on weekends. If you and your spouse are both working full-time, take advantage of the convenient new hours. For routine maintenance, like oil changes, Francis said they can typically turn it around same day. “If people want to make an appointment for an oil change and have a set time to pick it up, that works for us.” He said they will accept appointments for JCIs, but Francis said any other type of trouble shooting can take time. Francis told me the biggest take away is that they are a near full-service garage, with friendly and knowledgeable staff who want to make your car experience the best it can be. “We are here to help,” Francis said. Make sure to check out the map on the bottom of the page to stop by Auto Hobby for all your car care needs!

Did you know that preventive maintenance can save you money in the long run? Preventive maintenance includes changing your oil and filter to decrease engine breakdowns. It also includes replacing brake pads before they start grinding into your brake rotors, causing replacement of rotors and having your brake calipers to be overhauled. It also includes cooling system service, to make sure your engine doesn’t overheat, and you don’t get stranded. Auto Hobby Repair Center does vehicle servicing and repairs, so stop by or set up an appointment. Is your PCS around the corner? JCI up to date? Get your vehicle checked out at least 30 days before it expires. Is your A/C not as cold as it should be or not working? 4 - 8 May • Receive $15 off A/C services. Non sale price is $100. In honor of Military Appreciation Month, receive free tire rotation and mini visual inspection with any oil change scheduled.

RESALE LOT PCS season is coming up! Are you trying to sell your vehicle? Auto Hobby has a resale lot, so stop by to register your vehicle. Need Vehicle Insurance? We have an office located here, too! Insurance Office Hours Monday - Friday • 9 am - 5 pm Saturday • 10 am - 2 pm

They offer towing and roadside assistance, jump starts, lock outs, can change your tire, and more. For Club members, you can receive one free oil change per household, as well as towing to the Auto Hobby garage if your car is giving you trouble. As a spouse myself, I was concerned that I wouldn’t be able to get my car worked on because it is registered under my sponsor’s name. Francis assured me that’s no issue.

How does Chili’s support the community? Chili’s supports the community by serving a taste of home. Chili’s Kadena is truly “Like No Place Else” especially here on island. Most of us are removed from our “normal” life in the states so Chili’s is a piece of familiarity.

How does Chili’s support the community? We support the community by providing hospitality, great food from home, and exceptional service to make people feel special. What do you hope to accomplish for your customers? I hope to create the best life for our customers by connecting and serving all of our guests as best we can.

What do you hope to accomplish for your customers? We’re a close community and also a part of the military community, half of our staff are military spouses, so I hope our guests are able to come in and unwind from the day-to-day grind.

May Specials

What are your new menu items? We have a lot of menu changes coming soon. Some of our favorites are the Paradise Pie, Mini Molten, and Chicky Chicky Bleu sandwich which is an amazing chicken sandwich oozing with blue cheese. A DAY IN THE LIFE...

67th Fighter Squadron

Written by: Ellen Ice

Brigadier General Robbie Risner, Col James Hagerstrom, and Maj Louis Sebille - do you know what they all have in common? Aside from being often heard names on Kadena Air Base, these three exceptional men were once assigned, and commanded, the 67th Fighting Cocks. An incredible legacy graces the halls of the 67th Fighter Squadron, and the pilots assigned to the squadron know they have a level of excellence to uphold. The 67 FS flies the F-15C Eagle, a single seat, dual engine fighter jet.

The Eagle is an air-to-air jet so it’ll do long range, medium range, and some dog fighting, too. For Capt. Matt Petersen, this is the only job he has ever wanted. “We are here to support the rest of the forces in the Pacific here, and I think we have a pretty fun part of the mission,” Petersen said. Petersen is one of the newer pilots in the squadron. He said his typical day includes showing up early, making jalapeño popcorn (a fighter pilot tradition) and coffee, and making sure the squadron is in good order. Petersen said if he is flying, the day runs a little differently. “I’ll check with my flight lead and make sure there’s nothing that needs to be done before the flight, and then I’ll go and set up a brief,” Petersen said. He told us the pre-flight brief takes an hour and a half, the flight takes about the same amount of time, and the debrief can last hours and sometimes even days. “My role during the flight is to support my flight lead, do what I need to do in the air, then in the debrief it’s to learn from what

everyone is doing.” He said before they go out to the jets for a flight, they brief the status of the aircraft, what they can expect to be working or not working, the airfield status, weather status, what to expect in the airspace, and any limiting factors with tanker support or aerial patrol. Petersen said their job is highly technical, with constant multi-tasking and split-second decision making. He said they work on three main types of skills. “The Eagle is an air-to-air jet so it’ll do long range, medium range, and some dog fighting, too.” One of the people getting young wingman like Petersen up to speed is Capt. Craig “Irish” Spranger. Spranger is the Chief of Safety for the 67 FS, and he is one of the few instructor pilots. “It’s very rewarding, and it’s very difficult,” Spranger said. He said like Petersen, he has to be prepared for the pre-flight brief, flight, and debrief, but from a different perspective.

It’s very rewarding, and it’s very difficult. “I have to be prepared as the instructor pilot to receive their brief, execute, listen to their debrief, take notes on all of it, then instruct them on how to be better aviators,” Spranger said. He said what drives a lot of people to become fighter pilots is the love of flying, then once you reach a higher rank and change jobs you have to dig deeper for the ‘why.’ He said seeing his wingman fail and ultimately succeed is extremely rewarding. “I thrive on seeing the enthusiasm of these guys going through upgrades, you’ll see the highs of them passing an upgrade to the lows of hooking a ride,” Spranger said.

He said what people often don’t see are the long hours the pilots put in. He said on a typical flying day, you can expect to be at the squadron anywhere from 12 to 16 hours. He said that doesn’t count mission planning the day prior to the sortie, which is another 12 to 16 hour day. The pilots spend a dozen hours or so prepping, for what may only end up being an hour flight. Spranger said while that part of the job can be tenuous, he can’t imagine being anything other than an Eagle driver. “It’s the constant challenge, it never stops.”

We are here to provide air-to-air superiority, wherever we need it, whenever we need it. When I asked how the 67 FS contributes to the overall wing mission, the answer was a simple one. “We are here to provide air-to-air superiority, wherever we need it, whenever we need it.” Spranger explained the pilots are able to provide cover from the skies, to make sure those on the ground can do their jobs. Both pilots also wanted to mention the 67th Aircraft Maintenance Unit, because they said without their hard work and dedication to keeping the jets healthy, the pilots couldn’t do their mission. “They do a fantastic job, they learn quickly, and they work really hard,” Petersen said. Spranger added, “Without safe jets, I don’t necessarily come home to my wife and kids.” For next month’s Day in the Life article, we will be talking to the 67 AMU to hear their side of the mission. Thank you to the 67th Fighting Cocks for maintaining air superiority in the Pacific and in the world. We appreciate you!
